New Year's stampede in Shanghai: 35 dead, 43 injured

Perhaps, when you look at New York, despite the huge crowd no stampede takes place during New Year's celebration. The answer is facility.
There were lack of police in the Bund also, well let this be a lesson. It's still wise to stay at home or just avoid the crowd if one must be outdoors.

The other thing is that, despite the large crowd, Times Square has literally dozens of "spillways" where excess people can enter and leave. I know - I've been there for NYE one time and while there was a press of bodies, the cops also maintained areas of open space that were inaccessible to people but that could easily be used to alleviate pressure in the event of a crush of bodies. Whereas the Bund essentially has two openings- left and right, hemmed in by the river and tightly packed buildings and walls on the other side.

In the future, IMO, they need to sell tickets to limit access and have more security. Treat the Bund as if it was one giant indoor building and stop people once a certain capacity is reached. The local government is as much to blame for the fatalities as the nightclub promoters and the unruly crowd. Just a sad event all around but hopefully people learn from it.

Your observations is also correct about Times Square, but people should also learn what to do just in worst case scenario and some posture could be taken to avoid falling down or once fallen.

this is a reason.

Good idea. They should charge a fee to help with the clean up afterward and make some $$.
