The presidential elections are widely predicted to be the UPA’s biggest challenge to prevent future erosion of its authority depleted by scams and electoral reverses. But I do not foresee any major problem in the election of the ruling combination’s candidate, be it Hamid Ansari or Pranab Mukherjee.

If fielded by the UPA, Ansari, a career diplomat who served India with distinction, is unlikely to face opposition from the Samajwadi Party and the BSP. Besides being a Muslim, the vice president hails from Uttar Pradesh.

It’s difficult to predict the mercurial Mamata Banerjee’s approach. But even for her, stalling a candidate backed by the UPA’s outside supporters would mean pushing the Congress into the arms of the Left, whose soft-spot for Ansari is well known. The communists had a role in his elevation as vice president under UPA-I.

Barring his controversial decision to terminate the Rajya Sabha debate on the Lok Pal Bill, the vice president has done well as ex-officio chairman of the Upper House. His election would add value to the highest constitutional office.

In contrast, a broader consensus might be possible around the candidature of Mukherjee. Regardless of his long association with the Congress, he’s respected for his legendary grasp of complex administrative, parliamentary and constitutional issues.

Mukherjee reportedly is keen on wrapping up his enviable career with a stint in the presidency. The problem is of his indispensability as the Congress-UPA’s eternal trouble-shooter. The logic is formidable but not wholly tenable.

If he’s so precious in governance terms, why isn’t he promoted as PM or at least Deputy Premier? Not only will that refurbish the government’s image but make it look stronger in leadership terms.
Mukherjee’s lack of chemistry with Mamata is well known. But it will be difficult politically for her to oppose his candidature as a fellow Bengali. The State she governs hasn’t ever had a nominee in the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

One wouldn’t be surprised if the Congress arrives at a quid pro quo with non-UPA parties. It could offer them the VP’s office in return for having the President of its choice. Much of what transpires will depend on whom the ruling combine fields for the presidency.

APJ Abdul Kalam’s is among the other names in circulation. The BJP wants him as a joint candidate of the non-UPA parties. On the face of it, it looks easier planned than successfully executed.

the current president of India is total waste. Whichever country she went to address their parliament, the legislators ran off.

Rather disrespectful of you. If you don't like the president at least respect the office. Besides your presidents are wall flowers in terms of wielding political power by the nature of your constitution.

No! They are generally Congress lackeys! Under the great Italian thumb! :cheesy:

BJP just re-affirmed their support for APJ Abdul Kalam. They have no intention of supporting Ansari or Mukherjee.

President of India is a technical holder of all the power according to Article 53

Article 53 in The Constitution Of India 1949

(1) The executive power of the Union shall be vested in the President and shall be exercised by him either directly or through officers subordinate to him in accordance with this Constitution
(2) Without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing provision, the supreme command of the Defence Forces of the Union shall be vested in the President and the exercise thereof shall be regulated by law
(3) Nothing in this article shall
(a) be deemed to transfer to the President any functions conferred by any existing law on the Government of any State or other authority; or
(b) prevent Parliament from conferring by law functions on authorities other than the President

She has executive powers and supreme commander of the armed forces. How come it is not so in practice?

.
what!! a muslim presiding over the highest post in hindoo majority India!! how can that be! this is treachery, this sir, is blasphemy!

seriously though its pretty sad that such a person is just a figurative leader and doesn't exert more powers to influence policy decision in the country. He is one guy under whom I would be comfortable with India under president's rule! Welcome back APJ :victory:

in pre Indira Gandhi era, the president had significant powers.. but in 1972 she declared an emergency and nationalized all banks etc.. she also curtailed the powers of the president's office to such an extent that the ofc has been reduced to a wall hanging as per Indian constitution.

No rule, Dr.Rajendra Prasad served 2 terms, the only one to do that. after that however, a single term has been the norm.
