Nepal’s Cabinet today passed a special resolution asking India to open the border entry points to ease supplies of essential goods like medicines, gas and petroleum to the landlocked country, reeling under acute shortage due to blockade of key trade points.

The Cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister K P Oli passed the special resolution asking India to open the border entry points and ease supply of essentials including petrol and LPG, according to cabinet sources.

The Cabinet called on the Indian government to further improve the bilateral relations and make the bond of friendship strong by easing the supplies.

The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM) also asked the agitating Madhes-based parties to seek solutions to their demands through dialogue.

Stating that the government has already initiated process for treatment to the injured agitators, withdrawal of fake charges lodged against the detained protesters, and implementation of decision to compensate bereaved family members with Rs 1 million, the OPMCM urged the protesters to end blockade at border points at the time when festivals like Chhath and Lhosar are just around the corner.
The government has said it is serious about fulfilling other remaining demands through dialogue. “The government is saddened by the inconvenience caused to Nepali people at Terai and all across the country at this moment.

“We express gratitude to the general public for their patience and harmony during this critical times,” it said. The special resolution came as talks between the government representatives and the Madhesi parties scheduled for today were postponed.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa, who heads the government talks team, told media that the meeting was postponed due to lack of proper home works.

The development came amid a political crisis over the new Constitution opposed by Indian-origin Madhesis who have led an agitation and blockaded key border trade points of Nepal with India, bringing supplies of essential goods including fuel and cooking gas for over a month.

India has denied that it has imposed any blockade. Reeling under the pressure, Nepal has warmed up to China to open border trade points for the much-needed supplies ahead of the festive season.

Indo-Nepal relations have suffered a major setback since the promulgation of Nepal’s new Constitution, which did away with identifying the Himalayan nation as a Hindu state and proposed dividing the country into seven provinces.

Madhesis, protesting division of their ancestral homeland in the new Constitution, have led an agitation that has witnessed the killing of over 40 people. Consensus with the protesters has proved elusive for the new government that is still allocating Ministries to its ministers.

India for the first time raking up at the UNHRC alleged conflict-era human rights violations in Nepal has also not got down well with the Nepalese leadership that hit out at New Delhi, saying the neighbour has “opened our eyes”.

Prime Minister Oli had said Nepal is currently at the receiving end of the blockade which is ‘more inhuman than a war’, while Deputy Prime Minister C P Mainali has accused New Delhi of trying to disintegrate the country and annex the Terai region, triggering strong condemnation from India.

Even the Maoist chief Prachanda, known for his anti-India stance, had said that if India tries to dominate, the country “should be ready to fight against such oppression”.

Annexation of Terai is the ultimate objective. The situation will descend to a civil war, and India will move in like Russians in Crimea. The rest can become a mountain buffer state. They can warm up to China all they want after that. Terai is the Industrial and commercial heartland with 80% of Nepal's Industrial output and 68% of Agricultural output.

China being a lame regional power could have ceased the opportunity and had all the supply routes for Nepal through their territory

It won't be that much easy as Nepal- India route....There lies giant himalayas b/w nepal and china...Vehicles won't pass that much fast , that to in winter season.
Isn't it?
Madhesi's took this as opportunity and nailed it..this move was un-expected by nepali people.

Yup.

He is trying to setup an Indian boogeyman, but the reality is that all of Nepal's problems are internal. He can either rewrite the Nepali constitution to include the Terai people or continue the path to civil war. India does not and should not do anything as long as the region is on the brink of civil war.

The hill people grossly misunderstood their own position. You cannot bite the hand that feeds you.

Not that Simple.

India is not doing anything. Madhesis are the ones blocking the supply routes. Last time I checked they are Nepalis. India is not going to support the oppression and disenfranchisement of people in the Terai region by trying to forcefully break through the blockade or call in the army to clear the protesters.

Oil is fearful of his position now. He came to power through a 'Communist People's Revolution', but the people clearly aren't happy. His only way of saving face right now is to accuse India of not supporting his oppressive agenda and try to deflect responsibility. The only thing he can do right now to prevent covil war is to rewrite the constitution and provide more government positions and jobs to the Madhesis.

As we did with bangladesh enclaves nepal wants us to take another community( madhesi's) and did not conclude them in constitution because they have to move to india for bread and butter, clever move by Nepal...but madhesi community kicked their rear and sets a blockade..India may support madhesi but it looks like thier own people protesting against their govt.even indian trucks were destroyed/ burned..this shows no Indian hand in it.Nepal should understand and respect Madhesi interest ....
Option 1: Face riots/civil war
Option 2: give Madhesi their Rights and save your country..
Onus is on Nepal ..
Nothing New with words from CPN...Even CPI barks anti-india words. But we never give $h!t to them.

Supplies must be eased relative to how these "talks" progress and a fair constitution is completed.

Nepal is so reliant on India long term, that this winter should be more than sufficient for Nepal to come to its senses. If they are smart they will accept the very reasonable demands before the worst of the winter sets in.

I am sure plenty has been communicated at all levels already to Nepali leadership....and they probably even know how long they can resist +/- a few days.

CPN is in power and has tilt towards daddy china.CPN are anti-indian thats why it took such a big time for CPN to understand.I think still they didn't get their sense back! If it was shushil koirala , this problem would have solved by this time.

Nepal's communists will face tremendous hardships, they don't have an option. and the Civil conflict is on going, only thing is that it hasn't turned into war. how long can they run without Oil and rations, they cannot airlift their supplies. If you look it this way they have 8 all weather land routes from India. and only one from China. there is no way they can sustain their trade through the hilly terrain.

People will revolt, food is still a better motivator than ideology. I guess India needs to do nothing sit and watch. But India does have a slight role in this, that is total inaction.
