Nearly 100 People Still Missing After Condo Building Collapses in Florida, Officials Reveal

A 12-story residential building collapsed early Thursday in the Floridian town of Surfside, destroying 55 of the apartments and prompting a bevy of first responders to be dispatched to the area. Rescuers have evacuated dozens, however, many remain unaccounted for.
Law enforcement officials in Miami, Florida, revealed in their latest update to reporters that 99 people remain unaccounted for after the Surfside building collapsed in the area.
To date, officials have indicated that the partial building collapse killed at least one individual and injured 10 others. However, officials have also stressed that an official tally of injuries and fatalities remain unclear as the situation is still "fluid."
Approximately 53 people have been accounted for as of Thursday afternoon, Miami-Dade police relayed to The Washington Post.

Commissioner Sally Heyman underscored to the outlet that individuals who have been designated as "unaccounted for" have been tallied as such "because they have not been heard from or have not called family or friends to say they are okay."

The partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South Condo unfolded shortly after 1:30 a.m., effectively trapping many residents who were likely asleep at the time.

Heyman has also noted that the Miami-Dade Police Department's homicide unit is currently in charge of the investigation into the missing individuals.

Surveillance footage released earlier Thursday captured the exact moment that the collapse occurred, and showed several lights on in some of the units when the building collapsed.

Incidentally, the 40-year-old building's partial collapse took place a day after it had passed an inspection, Surfside Vice Mayor Tina Paul told the Post. At present, investigator are still unsure what prompted that collapse.

US President Joe Biden has stated that he has been in contact with Florida officials, including Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Cava and US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), telling reporters earlier that he had a "long discussion" with Cava about the development. He further noted that federal resources are ready to be dispatched, if needed.

Proudly made in the USA ...

It is pretty tragic what happened.

It was built in 1981 on wet lands its been sinking since 1990. 600 k US for the smallest unit in the building, residents are mostly Jewish and typically not permanent residents casualties are expected to be low since the units are mostly vacation condos.

Well, there are 99 people missing as of right now. If that holds true, that would be 102 unfortunate deaths.

Curious where you got the info on it being built on wetlands? They had kept tabs on it and knew it was subsiding my 2 millimeters (an engineering term for sinking) a year since they started monitoring it in the 90's but the subsiding was only discovered only 6 years ago. They'll have to determine whether that was the cause since that was a localized phenomenon. It also sheared off the other side which kinda contradicts that theory to a certain extent.

I have a feeling that the concrete columns on the lower floor suffered salt corrosion from all the exposure salt water from decades of hurricanes and sea water pounding the structure as well as a high water table being close to the sea and just finally gave out. But something like that would've been noticed and taken care of, I would think. Sad whichever way you look at it.

They're have to tear down the other half that is still standing up before they do anything else before that comes down, too.

Washington Post. missing doesn’t mean missing in the rubble but simply residents they haven’t been able to contact so far.

I know Collins, Harding, and Ocean Dr pretty well. I used to hang out there in the 90s. Surfside , Bal Harbour, and Sunny Isles are pretty much North Miami Beach.

Look like the quality of construction in the US are generally poor compared to East Asia. In addition, quality of maintenance work leave much to be desired. It is a fancy of the American to build grandiose constructions (just like China now), but the maintenance works thereafter have not been paid much attention.

I've seen various documentaries about rail, metro, roads, bridges etc in the US and they all look poor quality and in poor conditions. It is in stark contrast to Japan or Korea, where everything (even built 100 years ago) look new and well-maintained.

why don’t you google “building collapse China“ before you say stupid stuff…

China's volume of construction are many times bigger than the US. However, very few accidents have been heard. And I believe Western media will not miss a chance to report and bad-mouth China for any single accident, while China's / Vietnam's media generally does not care (or not equipped with necessary facilities / personnel) to report accidents in the US. One reported accident in the US will probably mean there are dozen others which are not and/or under reported.

The same with gun crime in the US. In Vietnam, the media only tells us about 10 gun firing in the US per year, but the number is probably thousands in reality (as per US statistics)

Do not be so sensitive and insecure. Many Americans are now acting more and more like Indian.

do you have any statistics to back up your claims of building collapse? I hate lies and liars always have. How many buildings have collapsed in the US over the last ten years vs your beloved China?

I think there was a report of a swimming pool on one of the floors leaking.

Actually it said this pool was leaking into the underground garage.

You would think that something like that would've been reported by the building management and/or other condo owners and repaired immediately. Not to mention that condo buildings have very strict associations that fees are paid into for maintenance and upkeep etc.

The way that one section sheared off -- and it was a large section almost 2/3 of the entire building is remarkable. That can really only mean that a critical, structural member at one of the lower floors gave out. There is a possibility that one of the middle floors gave way and the weight just pancaked the rest, but watching the CCTV or whatever footage was taken of the collapse shows more of a foundation portion giving way. Very unfortunate and bizarrely unique.

Unfortunately the rescue efforts are forced to move at a snail pace for fear of hurting any possible survivors that are trapped, but the 100+ that are still unaccounted for doesn't look good for them, I hate to say. But we've seen miracles happen like that Bangladeshi girl (I think it was there) that survived one of these for several weeks or something like that.
