theres no need for a marine corps if we have no amphibious capability.... we need more amphibious assault vessels if we want to have a marine corps

I don't know if you have heard about the planned purchase of 4 amphibious warship (order likely to be next year) and 8 ASV (order already given to GRSE). The raising of this separate brigade will also take time. In my personnel opinion, i think we should go for for a separate marine force just like many other nations. I mean we are the ones who actually needs marine force because of so many islands. We don't face any danger to our islands right now and hence nobody is considering importance of such force but imagine a kargil like situation on a far island of Lakshadweep group of islands, i don't think for a year anyone would even notice that our islands are captured by extremists. It can also effect our sea lanes...

Why Taiwan needs marines?Are they going to occupy China.

Taiwan does have own islands in Taiwan Strait and South China sea. Marines are used to defend these islands.

Good news!!

But i think we should increase more !!!!

In my personal view!! We should add more numbers in our armed forces, just look at the size of our population, i think we should have!!

1) 2.5 Million strong Army. (Excluding Reserves)
2) 3 Lakh active personals in air-force with at-least 3000+ Aircraft's (Total Numbers over all)
3) 1 Lakh active personals in Navy with +50 Frigates and +20 destroyers and +30 submarines(Including Nuclear ones)

My Dream Numbers..!! In other words we should double the numbers from currently what we have.!

If the only thing India concern about its the borders. Then there certainly would be no need for marines. Why would the former army chief expressed this desire? According to you, it would be to invade far away land?

we have many island and navy takes care of them with Army's soldiers as you see we have loads of them...

I believe the immediate need of India is to take care of its people instead of projecting power. India need to build infrastructure, health care and schools for its poor than build more weapons.

No more expenses please...Aircraft carriers are ok.We needed a few.But this agenda of Indian armed forces to grow beyond the region and become a global power will end up putting a heavy burden of cost upon us.We only need that much which is sufficient to protect our territory and we should concentrate on quality rather than quantity.

but we have soldiers who exercise with navy on regular basis along with commandos so why the hurry

Hopefully. But things as usual would go wrong. Especially in a country as efficient as India. By this rate, India would be ready to have the 5 nuclear subs by 2040. Also, India should also build some attack SSN instead of just SSBN.
