Its a bit old news, now it is decided that it will be only IN.

Can you post link/source?? I know currently amphibious duties are handled by specialised IA brigade and that there is a mighty amphibious training centre being created at A&N that will be ready by ~2018.

It looks like more of a inter service rivalry. The marines will be under IN command and not under IA, just like the IAF Garud.

No more expenses please...Aircraft carriers are ok.We needed a few.But this agenda of Indian armed forces to grow beyond the region and become a global power will end up putting a heavy burden of cost upon us.We only need that much which is sufficient to protect our territory and we should concentrate on quality rather than quantity.

You are right, still the same, only being formalised, naval assets being procured since the IA components are already in place. We don't call them marines though some of our journalists do.

Buddy, as of now, we are not fully capable of protecting our island territories from invasion. It is only with the induction of C-130Js that we are able to land airborne troops or resupply our garrisons on distant islands. Amphibious capabilities are still lacking. No one is going beyond the region but shouldn't we be able to safeguard what we have? Just look at the map of peninsular India and you will understand. All this should have been done decades ago. It appears a lot now as we are trying to clear the backlog in a short span of time.

Hey buddy, no inter service rivalry here. The jurisdictions are clearly spelt out. It is one composite amphibian force which will be under command of the senior most naval officer during transit through sea but once landed, the senior most Army commander takes over.

May be, but it doesn't hurt navy to have a a battalion of infantry soldiers under their command which will protect their assets rather than depending on Army.

The fact that India has no marines baffles me. I thought India, being an aspiring superpower, would certainly have marines.

I know Taiwan have one. They have conscription there and people are chosen by lottery to the various services. Most people would rather avoid marines as they are the hardest to serve. I also looked up and China does have marines as well. India is probably the only major country without a marine.

by the way Threat for India is from nearby so why marine corp we ain't going to go and invade far off land!!!!!

eventually will have coz our Former army chief expressed this desire and you know how things work in my country right painfully slow

but things are improving now waiting with cross fingers

If the only thing India concern about its the borders. Then there certainly would be no need for marines. Why would the former army chief expressed this desire? According to you, it would be to invade far away land?
