Island nations like Greece, Britain, Japan traditionally have powerful navies.

Greece in modern times never had a powerful navy.

Japan in its entire history never had a strong navy compared to China and Korea. Only time they were strong was in the the modern times from late 1800s to the end of World War 2.

Britain was able to have a strong navy from the 1700s all the way to the end of world war 2. But in the Cold War they were still a formidable naval power.

They lost to Italy and Greece also unable to prevent Gallipoli from happening. Having a bad navy was also one of the factors why the Ottoman Empire lost World War 1.

Well times have changed. Only thing that will destroy the Turkish navy is corruption and idiot politicians or leaders.

Biggest enemy is ourselves. In modern times Greece even in ww1 does not even come close to the top 10 navies at that time.

Depending on where you put the minimum size to take into account, Greece has somewhere between 1,200 to 6,000 islands. About 200 of them are inhabited. This does not make Greece an island nation though, not even close.
