Nato supply line to reopen ‘relatively quickly’
Sunday, 03 Oct, 2010

WASHINGTON: A vital land route used by Nato to deliver supplies to Afghanistan will reopen “relatively quickly,” Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington said Sunday, three days after his country blocked off its access.

Envoy Hussain Haqqani told CNN’s “State of the Union” program that the transit way likely will reopen within days.

“I think the supply line will be open relatively quickly,” he said.

Pakistan halted the Nato convoys on Thursday after officials blamed a cross-border Nato helicopter attack for the deaths of three Pakistani soldiers.

But Haqqani told CNN that he expected that the road would reopen in “less than a week.””It’s not a blockade. “It’s just a temporary suspension of the convoys moving through,” Haqqani said. “I do not expect this blockade to continue for too long.”

The Khyber pass at Torkham is on one of the main Nato supply routes through Pakistan into Afghanistan, where more than 152,000 US and Nato forces are fighting a Taliban-led insurgency.

Nato said its aircraft had entered Pakistani airspace Thursday in self-defense and had killed “several armed individuals” after the air crews believed they had been fired upon from Pakistani territory.

It was one of four such strikes last week by Nato helicopters pursuing militants into Pakistan, in actions that have been condemned by Islamabad.

Haqqani said that General David Petraeus, the US commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan, was looking into the matter.

“I spoke to General Petraeus last night. He called me from Kabul,” Haqqani said.

“He assured me he will resolve the issue over the Nato tanker supply line.

He understands Pakistan has not stopped it as a political retaliation but only to make convoys more secure,” he said.

Haqqani added that the recent imbroglio likely will create no permanent damage to future US-Pakistan cooperation.

“Pakistan is an American ally. America depends on Pakistan,” Haqqani said.

“We can and do not do everything the Americans think we should do because sometimes we don't have the capacity, sometimes we don't have the means,” he said.

Nevertheless, Haqqani continued, “we work those things out and that is exactly what we are doing right now.

“Minus all of the political noise, the fact remains that we are working together.” — AFP

It was a known fact.....otherwise USA gov will stop providing blank check to Pak...USA can surivive without Afgan....but Pak Gov can not survive without aid from US...so of course Pak gov was trying 2 fool its people by saying that Nato supply line has been closed...Ultimately..CIA will step up attach inside pak territory and your Army will just watching and will get compensated with few billion dollars...

I have no idea why are the Indians living in a fantasy that we can't survive without US aid. Are they having some problem in understanding things or is it due to the Pakistan phobia syndrome.

Every other Indian has this to say, pakistan will not run if US stops the aid.

So when we got sanctioned during the 90s, was there any US aid ?? Don't think so, then how did Pakistan survive.

Have the Indians any idea of how much resources Pakistan has ?? How much internal resources it can generate.

Agriculture which being around 22-24% of the economy, gives just 3-4Billion in taxes, so if we just tax the agri sector, we have potential of generating more then 200B rupees, more then 2B$$ yearly.

Similarly, if our economic manager can reduce the losses of the govt run organizations, we can save another 2-3B$$ yearly, if done so, aid / loans far away, we can start repaying back the loans we are under, and in few years time, completely independent from any loans or aid.

But our bad luck is that we have corrupt, incompetent leaders / politicians, running this country, due to which we are in such crisis.

Pakistan has nearly half of the GDP as black economy, the undocumented one, the un-taxed one. So its not the fault of Pakistan, its rich, its the people who don't pay taxes, its the govt who is incompetent.

So would be better for the Indians to talk with facts not sarcasm, as you people have no idea about Pakistan and its potential.

.
So why does Pakistan keep taking US aid? If it can really do without it, why does it take US aid?

.
I agree that Pakistan has a lot of potential and no one denies it and no Indian is trying to demean its capabilities... but most of them doubt the resolve... It is apparent from your generous use of "if".
It is time to cut down the "ifs and buts" and get down to actually transforming your economy. This is the beginning of the Asian Age.

.
Taimi most of the Indians here are just trolls, who repeat the same thing over and over again, and make up 4000 posts pretty soon, and then congratulate themselves.

A Bangladeshi brother commented that these people cannot think rationally.

.
Its not toooo quickly it was bound to be opened. 3 days were enough to force to US to agree to carry on joint investigations.

and oh btw who said blocking supplies was the only option to halt these supplies.

. .
wow not even a week long protest.

Looks like Islamabad received a "phone call" from Washington

.
So why does Pakistan keep taking US aid? If it can really do without it, why does it take US aid?

Even if you refuse to take it US is not going to stop the war so better milk them when they are available for milking
