Nato ex-commander warns Pakistan on porous border

WASHINGTON: Islamic fighters are still entering Afghanistan from Pakistan, despite a deal between Islamabad and tribal chiefs meant to cut down the incursions, Nato’s former top general has warned.

General James Jones, who handed over to General John Craddock as supreme allied commander Europe this month, said the western alliance’s political leadership would raise the issue with Pakistan unless things improved.

Pakistan’s government signed peace deals in September with tribal elders along the border, saying the move would help stem the flow of Taliban fighters entering Afghanistan to battle western troops.

But Jones said yesterday, during an appearance at the Atlantic council of the United States think-tank, he had discussed the situation frankly with General Ehsan ul Haq, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Pakistan’s military staff last month.

"I told him that the returns did not really look too encouraging, given the porous nature of the borders and some very physical evidence that fighters were still coming across and returning rather freely across the many border crossings that are there," Jones said.

"I think that from the political side that Nato will be heard through the Secretary General on this issue if it continues to be a significant problem," said Jones.

"The problem of the Taliban is not an Afghan problem alone. This could be a Pakistani problem if Afghanistan doesn’t work out the way we want it to."

If Nato can do any better why doesn't it seal it from it's own side?

.
because it will show there own inability to do so.easier target is pakistan blame the pakistanies.and lets try to have paksiatn lose its soldiers to fight American war.If the americans want it bad enough they should put there personal there and fight.:D

.
Kind of agree with cheeta, Afghanistan is tougher terrain than Iraq where US is failing badly.
Its easier to blame Pakistan for their failure in Afghanistan.

.
Let them blame, like we care.

Blame is pretty much to do more.. more.. and more... and possibly send Pakistani soldiers in Afghanistan so they can get out.

Stupid morons... :D

Errr guys I think that it is important that Pak secures it's borders or there might be cross border incidents. Remember what happened to the countries alongside Vietnam. Currently the NATO forces are not crossing the border. But if SF ops occur (and they probably already are) it's only a matter of time before these things come to a head.

Excuse me, NATO/ American forces are free to operate over Waziristan. The last attack on the seminary is proof that Punjabastan has no control over its airspace in the North West frontier border areas with Afghanistan.

The problem my friend from 'Bradistan' is that despite special forces and high tech air support and the whole 9 yards, the Pukhtoon's are busting these pussy *** British and canadian guys right between the butt-cheeks.....:) ...where it matters.;)

I know that they also take heavy casualties.....but no where near what the papers report on killing 100-5000 Taliban's daily....

Believe me the SF cross into Waziristan daily.....But with limited success and failures. Time is on the Pakhtoon side. Your hillbilly's will run out of time and money soon.;)

I think Nato should seal the border from its own side... Security forces in Afghanistan have been crying for more troops. America in fact has mostly pulled out and its just Canada and Britain left there. We are doing enough, securing the border is the toughest job out there. We did agree to plans to assist nato and build a fence. Where's the funding for that? They should definitely foot that bill.

They complain so much it has lost all meaning.

.
No they wont bother doing that.If you fail to seal your borders they will kill more of your own as what happened a few months back in the madrassa.

What logic is there in saying that you wont seal your borders? Arent you worried abt the elements that would infiltrate your country from Afghanistan? Or is it that you have more to send across than you will recieve.

.
Heh!

Oh bhai meray that border cannot be sealed...period!

Has anyone ever been to Waziristan?? I have! If you look ahead of you there is a mountain towering over your head for a thousand feet!

You look to your right, left and back....same god-damn thing....as far as you can see....

And when you think its time to go, you realise you are being watched..

Kissy kay baap kay buss main naheen to seal that border.

.
It costs money to seal a border. And if they keep "oopsing" and killing our people they'd just alienate another ally. We can reduce the infiltration on our own, but seal it? It's their problem, they are being killed, they should pay for it.

You have heard?

Nato's money can't change the obvious fact that the border is unsealable. If anything it can be sealed from Afghanistan if the border is fortified a few kilometers within Afghan territory.

The problem with fighting them is, this fight started against the Taliban now it turns out they are all Taliban. That has been Pakistan's new argument that you can't fight a race of people unless you plan to kill each and every one of them. The only other option was dealing with them, something Nato is yet to come to terms with. They think the Taliban and the tribal Pakhtoon are two different things.

.
Well Pakistan should seal the border and maintain its sovereignity. I think Nato and the US spec forces are already operating freely in the border provinces.
The Taliban better keep an eye out for Predator drones.

I am confused about one thing, Talibans are Pakistanis, why cant they just arrest them and hand them over to Nato ?? Musharraf was proud that they earned millions of dollars by handing over Taliban to US Spec Forces ?

You are justifiably confused, because you are incorrect. ;) Majority of Taliban happen to be Afghans.
