Nations with worst religious tolerance named

I do agree China's name should be on the list, they are extremely repressive of religion, though the state's national Atheist/Maoism ideology is allowed to flourish, for obvious reasons..

For example, China's policies in E. Turkistan are absolutely shameful, despicable, an horrendous, they have laws like a Turkic Muslim in their "Xinjiang" cannot attend a Masjid unless they are 18 and have finished "state school" (usually they are brainwashed by the state Maoist doctrine)...Also the repressive and brutal rule there is amazing, for example the Chinese have conducted many Nuclear tests in "Xinjiang" were many Uyghur people live. Uyghurs over the years have developed radioactive-related diseases and birth defects, there population has suffered so much their numbers are decreasing dramatically...

Also the Christians too suffer considerably in China, they have to build "under-ground Churches..." hide their faith, and bibles...

Things are very state-controlled in China.Anyways I will say what is right and true, I understand no body is perfect but this is unacceptable.

However, I believe Pakistan is quite tolerant of our Christian community, I don't recall organized pogroms by average Pakistani citizens going around butchering fellow Christian Pakistanis...Trust me Christian neighborhoods are sometimes right next to Muslim ones, so it's not like we have a Christian quarter and a Muslim quarter in a city, there is freedom between the communities.

Pakistan is certainly one of the most tolerant Muslim countries and Asian countries... (I am talking about average Pakistanis, not TTP or hate groups)

The only reason India is friends with America is because America also gives freedom of religion to its citizens :)

Seriously, why don't you suggest some ways of how Pakistan can improve its own record / perception? Since Omar is also a China expert, he can suggest ways for China too. Go ahead, make it constructive.

I also agree that India should top the list of World's most intolerant countries of minority religions. The standing record on how India has treated it's minority religions, Islam, Christianity, and Sikhs is quite damning.

Indians should do themselves a favor and wake up, the "Incredible India" they imagine on the newly imported South Korean Tv's with commercials playing showing India as a booming "next superpower" is not a reality, it is disillusion, a fictitious vision that is deliberately blind to all the major problems India's natural way of life perpetuates. For example, the very own fundamental structure of Indian life, the racist caste system is extremely counter-productive, and it kills any idea of India being a truly democratic and equal country...

Again India should top the list of World's most Intolerant Countries of Minority Religions...

^ China is not as bad as India. Atleast China didn't wipe out a whole group of people from a district who were once majority.

Many people today are forgetting that Firozpur in India was Muslim MAJORITY before 1947, and now today there are no Muslims left in that district.

Religious Intolerance
Hindu-Christian violence in India

1996 "Freedom of Religion Bill"
Mangalprabhat Lodha, a member of the Bharatiya Janatha party, introduced a "freedom of religion" bill in 1996-DEC to the Maharashtra State Assembly. The bill appears to be poorly named, because its prime aim is to prevent religious conversions and severely limit people's freedom to proselytize in that state.

Lodha claimed that Christian missionaries have set as their goal the conversion of 100,000 Hindus to Christianity. The bill, if made into law, is clearly unconstitutional. The Indian constitution guarantees all of its citizens the right to select and change their own religion, and the right to communicate their religious beliefs to others.

Maharashtra state has a population of about 80 million and includes the city of Bombay.
Examples of Hindu violence towards Christians:
Some Hindus have accused Christian missionaries of offering money and goods to Tallit (a.k.a. untouchables) and other lower caste Indians as an inducement to convert to Christianity. Although the caste system has been officially outlawed for many years, it is still followed by many citizens -- particularly in rural areas. There are accusations that some low caste Indians have converted to Buddhism or Christianity in order to escape from the caste system. This is viewed as a destabilizing force by many Hindus.

Christians experienced increased oppression after the nationalistic Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)came to power federally in 1998. Violence continues, even after the BJP was replaced by the Congress Party in 2004. Some examples of inter-faith violence:

1999: Graham Staines, an Australian Christian missionary had worked for 30 years with leprosy patients in Orissa state for three decades. In 1999, he and his two young sons -- Philip, 10, and Timothy, 6, were trapped inside a car by Hindu fundamentalist militants who set fire to his vehicle. All three were burned to death. In 2003, 13 men were convicted of mass murder. Dara Singh was sentenced to hang; his 12 accomplices, were sentenced to life in prison. 1
2000: During the first half of the year, there were 35 violent incidents in which Christians were victimized. These include bombings, church arson, beating deaths, and assaults. Roman Catholic Archbishop de Lastic stated: "There is a definite strategy and plan at the national level -- these forces at work want to intimidate Christians."
Some Protestant and Catholic leaders blamed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This is a Hindu spiritual group, from which the BJP political party grew. The All India Christian Council wrote that Christians are "sick of the statements and are not fooled by the utterances of the central government." 2 Herod Malik, spokesperson for the United Forum for Catholics and Protestants said: "We are scared. We have to go to international organizations because we have no faith in the Indian government." 3

Federal government leaders denied that the RSS is responsible. They accused Pakistani security forces. 1

2007: During the Christmas holiday period, about 10 people died, 90 churches were burned and 600 homes were destroyed in Orissa state. 4
2008: Clashes continue in Orissa state. The Baptist World Alliance claimed in August that the death toll had reached at least 25. They reported that more than 600 churches had been demolished and that 4,000 Christians had been forced to flee from their villages.

The Associated Baptist Press reported in 2008-AUG-27:
"A nun died and a pastor was hurt when fire swept an orphanage in the Bargarh District. Apparently none of the 21 children housed there died."

"In an Aug. 26 e-mail to the BWA, Swarupananda Patra, General Secretary of the All Orissa Baptist Churches Federation, said, 'All Christian villages [are] empty in Kandhamal as Christians, old and young, sick and pregnant mothers [are] hiding in forests exposed to the non-stop monsoon rains without food. Kandhamal is the hardest hit, with at least eight Christians killed and almost all Christian homes demolished,' he reported. 'I appeal to the governing authorities in India to intervene to save the lives of the many who are being victimized in the current crisis,' BWA General Secretary Neville Callam said in a press release. 'Respect for the principle of religious liberty and the sacredness of human life requires nothing less'." 5

Religious Intolerance
Muslim-Hindu religious intolerance in India

Examples of Hindu-Muslim violence:
1992: Some Hindus burned down a 16th century mosque in the northern Indian town of Ayodhya. Their plan was to build a Hindu temple on the site, which is sacred to followers of both religions. This action has resulted in the occasional outburst of rioting:

1993: Hindu-Muslim riots in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) caused the deaths of 800 people.

2002-FEB-26: 58 people died during a fire on board a train in the western state of Gujarat. Most of the victims were Hindu pilgrims. Initially, Muslims were blamed for attacking the train and setting it on fire. However, subsequent evidence has shown that the fire was the result of an accident.

Belief that Muslims were responsible for the carnage motivated some Hindus to retaliate. Within five days, 499 people had been killed -- mostly Muslims. Many were burned to death. According to the New York Times, during the week of 2002-APR-22:

"... more than 40 people have perished in the continuing violence, in the western state of Gujarat. The official death toll in the last two months has risen to 900. More than 100,000 people, mostly Muslims, are estimated to have fled to relief camps. On Tuesday, [2002-APR-30] Parliament will debate whether the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party -- which has led a national coalition government for most of the last four years and controls the state of Gujarat, its last major state stronghold -- has been complicit in the carnage. ..."

"Indian officials were particularly stung by the leak of a confidential assessment by British diplomats who estimated the death toll at 2,000, more than twice the official tally, and said the anti-Muslim violence had been planned and carried out with the state government's support."

Many Muslim victims have testified:
"that the mobs were led by people from the Bharatiya Janata Party and other organizations in its Hindu nationalist family, particularly the World Hindu Congress and its youth wing, the Bajrang Dal."1
2002-SEP-24: Radical fundamentalist Muslim extremists attacked the Swaminarayan temple. This Hindu temple is located on a 23 acre complex in Gandhinagar, the state capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. This temple is particularly popular to Hindus, Muslims, Jews and Christians alike, because it houses scriptures of all of the major world religions in its Hall of Harmony. It is a well-known cultural center visited by over two million people each year. By selecting this temple for attack, among all of the Hindu temples in India, the radical Muslim terrorists might have been aiming a blow against the concept of religious tolerance, rather than simply hoping to kill Hindus at prayer. Two extremists invaded the temple and murdered people indiscriminately. The total death toll was about 30, including the two terrorists, one Indian commando who died in the counterattack, and four chldren. Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, his deputy Lal Krishnan Advani and opposition leader Sonia Gandhi quickly visited the temple together stressing the need for religious harmony and the avoidance of revenge attacks against Indian Muslims. The Hindu fundamentalist World Hindu Council has called for a state-wide strike. 2

Seriously, why don't you suggest some ways of how Pakistan can improve its own record / perception? Since Omar is also a China expert, he can suggest ways for China too. Go ahead, make it constructive.

The Hindus and Indians of this forum are clearly intoxicated to such an extent that they are blinded of the F I L T H exhibited by their own selves.

The lower castes for examples are regarded as dirt, and most Hindus will not even touch them.

We can conclude therefore, that according to the caste system, the Indians are not even tolerant to their own people; never mind other faiths!

The number of people deemed as “untouchable” in India surpasses well over 50million, and some estimates as high as 150million.

Check mate, and have a nice day Indian friends.

India's "Untouchables" Face Violence, Discrimination

More than 160 million people in India are considered "Untouchable"—people tainted by their birth into a caste system that deems them impure, less than human.

Human rights abuses against these people, known as Dalits, are legion. A random sampling of headlines in mainstream Indian newspapers tells their story: "Dalit boy beaten to death for plucking flowers"; "Dalit tortured by cops for three days"; "Dalit 'witch' paraded naked in Bihar"; "Dalit killed in lock-up at Kurnool"; "7 Dalits burnt alive in caste clash"; "5 Dalits lynched in Haryana"; "Dalit woman gang-raped, paraded naked"; "Police egged on mob to lynch Dalits".

"Dalits are not allowed to drink from the same wells, attend the same temples, wear shoes in the presence of an upper caste, or drink from the same cups in tea stalls," said Smita Narula, a senior researcher with Human Rights Watch, and author of Broken People: Caste Violence Against India's "Untouchables." Human Rights Watch is a worldwide activist organization based in New York.

India's Untouchables are relegated to the lowest jobs, and live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated, paraded naked, beaten, and raped with impunity by upper-caste Hindus seeking to keep them in their place. Merely walking through an upper-caste neighborhood is a life-threatening offense.

Nearly 90 percent of all the poor Indians and 95 percent of all the illiterate Indians are Dalits, according to figures presented at the International Dalit Conference that took place May 16 to 18 in Vancouver, Canada.

Crime Against Dalits

Statistics compiled by India's National Crime Records Bureau indicate that in the year 2000, the last year for which figures are available, 25,455 crimes were committed against Dalits. Every hour two Dalits are assaulted; every day three Dalit women are raped, two Dalits are murdered, and two Dalit homes are torched.

No one believes these numbers are anywhere close to the reality of crimes committed against Dalits. Because the police, village councils, and government officials often support the caste system, which is based on the religious teachings of Hinduism, many crimes go unreported due to fear of reprisal, intimidation by police, inability to pay bribes demanded by police, or simply the knowledge that the police will do nothing.

"There have been large-scale abuses by the police, acting in collusion with upper castes, including raids, beatings in custody, failure to charge offenders or investigate reported crimes," said Narula.

That same year, 68,160 complaints were filed against the police for activities ranging from murder, torture, and collusion in acts of atrocity, to refusal to file a complaint. Sixty two percent of the cases were dismissed as unsubstantiated; 26 police officers were convicted in court.

Despite the fact that untouchability was officially banned when India adopted its constitution in 1950, discrimination against Dalits remained so pervasive that in 1989 the government passed legislation known as The Prevention of Atrocities Act. The act specifically made it illegal to parade people naked through the streets, force them to eat feces, take away their land, foul their water, interfere with their right to vote, and burn down their homes.

Since then, the violence has escalated, largely as a result of the emergence of a grassroots human rights movement among Dalits to demand their rights and resist the dictates of untouchability, said Narula.
Enforcement of laws designed to protect Dalits is lax if not non-existent in many regions of India. The practice of untouchability is strongest in rural areas, where 80 percent of the country's population resides. There, the underlying religious principles of Hinduism dominate

Hindus believe a person is born into one of four castes based on karma and "purity"—how he or she lived their past lives. Those born as Brahmans are priests and teachers; Kshatriyas are rulers and soldiers; Vaisyas are merchants and traders; and Sudras are laborers. Within the four castes, there are thousands of sub-castes, defined by profession, region, dialect, and other factors. (Religion intolernce is part of Indias major and ruling party religion) Untouchables are literally outcastes; a fifth group that is so unworthy it doesn't fall within the caste system.
Although illegal, 40 million people in India, most of them Dalits, are bonded workers, many working to pay off debts that were incurred generations ago, according to a report by Human Rights Watch published in 1999. These people, 15 million of whom are children, work under slave-like conditions hauling rocks, or working in fields or factories for less than U.S. $1 day.

Crimes Against Women

Dalit women are particularly hard hit. They are frequently raped or beaten as a means of reprisal against male relatives who are thought to have committed some act worthy of upper-caste vengeance. They are also subject to arrest if they have male relatives hiding from the authorities.

A case reported in 1999 illustrates the toxic mix of gender and caste.

A 42-year-old Dalit woman was gang-raped and then burnt alive after she, her husband, and two sons had been held in captivity and tortured for eight days. Her crime? Another son had eloped with the daughter of the higher-caste family doing the torturing. The local police knew the Dalit family was being held, but did nothing because of the higher-caste family's local influence.

There is very little recourse available to victims.

A report released by Amnesty International in 2001 found an "extremely high" number of sexual assaults on Dalit women, frequently perpetrated by landlords, upper-caste villagers, and police officers. The study estimates that only about 5 percent of attacks are registered, and that police officers dismissed at least 30 percent of rape complaints as false.

The study also found that the police routinely demand bribes, intimidate witnesses, cover up evidence, and beat up the women's husbands. Little or nothing is done to prevent attacks on rape victims by gangs of upper-caste villagers seeking to prevent a case from being pursued. Sometimes the policemen even join in, the study suggests. Rape victims have also been murdered. Such crimes often go unpunished.

Thousands of pre-teen Dalit girls are forced into prostitution under cover of a religious practice known as devadasis, which means "female servant of god." The girls are dedicated or "married" to a deity or a temple. Once dedicated, they are unable to marry, forced to have sex with upper-caste community members, and eventually sold to an urban brothel.

Resistance and Progress

Within India, grassroots efforts to change are emerging, despite retaliation and intimidation by local officials and upper-caste villagers. In some states, caste conflict has escalated to caste warfare, and militia-like vigilante groups have conducted raids on villages, burning homes, raping, and massacring the people. These raids are sometimes conducted with the tacit approval of the police.

In the province Bihar, local Dalits are retaliating, committing atrocities also. Non-aligned Dalits are frequently caught in the middle, victims of both groups.

"There is a growing grassroots movement of activists, trade unions, and other NGOs that are organizing to democratically and peacefully demand their rights, higher wages, and more equitable land distribution," said Narula. "There has been progress in terms of building a human rights movement within India, and in drawing international attention to the issue."

In August 2002, the UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UN CERD) approved a resolution condemning caste or descent-based discrimination.

"But at the national level, very little is being done to implement or enforce the laws," said Narula.

India's "Untouchables" Face Violence, Discrimination

THis is American website obviously not visible to the blind
Although based on religious principles practiced for some 1,500 years, the system persists today for economic as much as religious reasons.

Because they are considered impure from birth, Untouchables perform jobs that are traditionally considered "unclean" or exceedingly menial, and for very little pay. One million Dalits work as manual scavengers, cleaning latrines and sewers by hand and clearing away dead animals. Millions more are agricultural workers trapped in an inescapable cycle of extreme poverty, illiteracy, and oppression.

Read the bold, I raised similar arguments/points earlier. Good to see others on par with reality.

The Indian members here are left to either man up and say yes we need to improve our tolerance because we have failed ourselves miserably, or they are simply in denial, they will deflect attention to Pakistan, there is little reasoning with them sometimes...

Or maybe they only listen to people of their own caste...;)

Salaam O alaikum

I would like to apologise for the abrupt nature of my post, I was simply caught up in the moment :azn:

However, as my brothers have demonstrated, Indians do seem to be rather hypocritical here; and they have allot to answer for themselves.

You meant British right?

History
Firozpur District was part of the Mamdot estate. The capital city, Firozpur, is believed to have been founded by Firuz Shah Tughluq from which the district obtains its name. In 1838, as part of the first Anglo-Afghan war, troops of the British East India Company marched from Ferozepur to Kabul. Seven years later during the Anglo-Sikh War the area was the scene of conflict between the Khalsa army and the British. It has always remained an important place throughout its existence. It has always remained as a border area, earlier between sikhs and britishers and now between India and Pkistan[1]

At the time of Partition of the subcontinent, Firozpur had a Muslim Nawab and had been ruled by the same Mamdot family for centuries, along with the majority which voted to join Pakistan. In a very controversial move, however, British Viceroy Mountbatten the Firozpur district, and the estate of the Nawab of Mamdot to India, forcing hundreds of thousands of Muslims to flee in the chaos of Partition from Firozpur to Pakistan. This was a very controversial move, and many Pakistanis believe this was an attempt by the British to undermine the survival of Pakistan as an independent state, since this move would leave the newly established nation without one single military complex. Today, Firozpur has a Sikh and Hindu majority with a virtually non-existent Muslim population.

^ I know many fled to Pakistan, but many were also killed when they were on their way to Pakistan, many were also raped and kept as slaves. Not all made it to Pakistan.

If India was so tolerant there would be atleast some Muslims left in the once Muslim Majority district like some Sikhs and Hindus are left in Pakistan, even though none of the districts in Pakistan had Sikh/Hindu majority prior to the partition of 1947.

British had a hand in it, but you Indians were responsible for the killing and raping of Muslims that caused the total population of Muslims in Firozpur to be zero today.

From an Indian website:

Prior to the Partition of India, Ferozpur had a large Muslim majority. According to the Partition Plan, all Muslim majority regions were to accede to Pakistan and all Hindu and Sikh majority regions to India. However, allegedly pro-Indian Lord Mountbatten changed the original partition map, drawn by Sir Radcliffe, handing over Gurdaspur, Ferozpur,Ambala and Mansa district to India. During the first week of partition massive violence erupted in Ferozpur, resulting in the slaughter of thousands of Muslims by Sikhs and Hindus. After the Partition a lot of movement had occurred from both sides of the Border. Today, Ferozpur has a Sikh and Hindu majority with a virtually non-existent Muslim population, as a result of the wide-scale massacres and immigration. There are a couple of Muslim families resided on the border side of Ferozpur and Pakistan, but have changed there faith to Sikhism and adapted the Sidhu surname.

Punjabizm :: History and Photo Gallery of Punjab's districts.

INDIANS ARE FAR FROM BEING TOLERANT. Today we have Sikhs and Hindus in Pakistan's Punjab, no one changed their faith..they do exist but Indians wiped out Muslims from India's Punjab.

Now instead of arguing for why Pakistan should not be on the list or how things can improve, posters here are busy talking abt India's failures. If pointing to India's failures could improve things in Pakistan, then Pakistan would have become haven by now. Seriouly, get over your india obsession.

The riots in India are a reality, they are law and order problem, but don't stop people from following their religion. Out of 200 million + and growing minorities, some people get affected, yes, but that's a failure and not policy - unlike the way quadiyanis are treated, or non muslims barred from top posts, sikhs having to pay jaziya (now officially too once sharia is implemented?), blasphemy laws etc.

Now how many days the drama of sikhs jaziya was going on? Over a week. everybody knew abt it, and what did the govt do, instead of proving security to those sikhs, they looked the other way and their houses destroyed y'day. yes with indirect official sanction.

i've no doubt most pakistanis may be tolerant, but they surely can't see clearly when the word islam is mentioned. 'we are a muslim country and hence this injustice is ok' is an accepted argument. this does not happen in india,we fight to improve things. are we perfect, hell no, do we want to be hell yes.

And the Forezepur argument is the most rubbish argument i've heard. Border areas most people left for the other country. If what happened 62 years ago proves that in 2009 India's religious freedom record is worse than China's, then hey, love is blind but also blinding. Sheesh. If these kinds of reports get under your skin so much, then do something about it instead of parading your ignorance and learn something from your brotherly nation bangladesh too.

Malerkotla:
Malerkotla, a Muslim Sherwani state, is most respected house in Punjab. Maler Kotla state was founded in 1600. It is a historic fact that during the 1947 riots when the whole of Punjab was in flames, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence, through it all, it remained a lone island of peace.[2]

Malerkotla in the district map of Sangrur, PunjabThe origin of this rare occurrence dates back to 1705, when the younger sons of 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, were ordered to be bricked alive by the governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, his close relative, Sher Mohammed Khan, Nawab of Malerkotla, who was present in the court, lodged vehement protest against this inhuman act and said it is against the glorious tenets of Quran and Islam [3]. Wazir Khan nevertheless had the Sahibzadas tortured and bricked into a section of wall while still alive. At this the noble Nawab of Malerkotla walked out of the court in protest.

Guru Gobind Singh on learning this kind and humanitarian approach profusely thanked the Nawab of Malerkotla and blessed him with his Hukamnama, Kirpan etc. In recognition of this act, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence during partition.

During the partition of India, the Ruling Family of Sheikh Sadr-ud-Din Sherwani migrated to Pakistan and living mostly in Model Town, Lahore, Muzzafargarh, Khangarh.[4] Though many also contribute this peace to the presence of the shrine of 'Baba Haidar Sheikh', the Sufi saint, who founded the town of Malerkotla more than 500 years ago.[5]
To facilitate the oriental scholars, Punjabi University, Patiala, decided to establish an Institute of higher learning in this field in the 'Urdu Town of Punjab' i.e. Malerkotla named after one of the founders of Malerkotla Estate, Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan. The NAWAB SHER MOHD. KHAN INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES IN URDU , PERSIAN AND ARABIC provides the facilities of higher research in the area of Urdu/Persian Languages and Literature up to the level of Ph.D. Besides regular classes are being run for M.A. (Persian) and Certificate Courses (Urdu, Persian and Arabic).
