All parties play to the crowd. This is the same BJP that was tooth and nail against Pakistan appeasement policies of UPA, now it's doing the same, not to forget NDA allied with TMC and AIADMK during Vajpayee govt.

BJP's support to PDP takes the cake. PDP is worse than the Hurriyat.

It looks like the guy wasn't beaten up for singing national anthem which features in the school diary and as per students and teachers is sung every morning till this day.

However beating up a guy because he holds liberal values is equally bad.

National anthem insulted? How a year-old story resurfaces for everyone to outrage and write columns | Newslaundry

Akhtar’s version from the same article:
But what about his colleagues’ claims that the national anthem has always been sung in the school? “That’s not true, I started this nationalistic tradition,” he maintained. Also, does he believe it was his insistence on students singing the national anthem that led to him being attacked? “It was one of the many things.”

And those liberal views were his support for the education of Muslim girls and persuading parents of his girl students to let their daughters continue their studies and publicly denounce child marriage. Before being assaulted, he had started counselling poor Muslim parents not to marry off their minor daughters to old Muslim men. The enraged Muslim clerics.........this is even worst than singing or not singing the national anthem. :( It has been written in the OP, and has been mentioned once in the newslaundry article under headmaster Akhter's statement. He also stated that he was asked to grow his beard and wear a skull cap!

The current teacher-in-charge of the school, Ferdousi Begum's views are expected to be different than his, as she is 'successfully' continuing to work in the same school. :)

And newslaundry presented this part in an interesting way: "Begum admitted that while the police was escorting Akhtar out of the Madrassa gate, he did get roughed up and his head was injured in the process".
It's like saying that: "Your honour, my client just grabbed his neck, he suffocated to death in the process"!! :)

And the last para in the OP article was most unfortunate (and completely believable):
The Kolkata Police Commissioner has written to the chairman of the Minorities Commission, stating that he was not in a position to provide security to Akhtar as “his presence in the area might lead to communal tension because of his comments in some newspapers”.

Like I said beating someone for his liberal value is equally bad, however looks like national anthem angle is brought up to give it a patriotic color. Jaate public beshi khay!! ;)

Well pointed out. The last para was truly mind boggling.

however looks like national anthem angle is brought up to give it a patriotic color
Why? Did the flag hoisting NOT play a part in him being beaten up? Your Islamists made it clear - hoisting the flag and singing the National Anthem was blasphemous in a Madrasah.

My islamists? Lol are you ram madhab in disguise? :D

Anyway why are you so fixated about national anthem, like I said beating someone up for his liberal values is equally bad. But I guess you dont care about liberal values, do you?

They posted a picture of the school diary(every kid needs to carry that) where national anthem is printed as prayer 1, also as per students national anthem has always been sung, i see no reason for students to lie, or at best its a he said, she said situation.

No, not the students, it was the current teacher-in-charge of the school, Ferdousi Begum who claimed that national anthem has always been sung. Though the bigger concern is that he was stopped from promoting education among the Muslim girls and campaigning against the child marriages, but Akhter also claimed that national anthem was also an issue, and it is quite believable considering the well-known attitude of conservative Muslims about the national anthem, and those who have beaten up Akhter were certainly conservatives, if not radicals.

And it was a state govt. sponsored madrasa, that diary or book is likely to be a standard issue by the state government madrasa board, distributed free or at a subsidized rate. General state govt. sponsored schools also distribute free books, till class IV I think. State govt. sponsored madrasas/schools barely get enough fund to run the institutions properly and maintain basic hygine, and they don't charge fees to the students, so it is very unlikely that they print diaries for the students.

Here are a couple of old articles from the mainstream media when this issue began, both mentions about the national anthem issue:

'Wear skull cap, grow beard': Talibani diktat to Kolkata madrasa head | kolkata | Hindustan Times

Talibani diktat to Madarsa teacher; prohibited from teaching until dons skull cap and beard - Times of India

And here is what Kazi Masum Akhtar has to say in his own voice!

Because it is the Indian National Anthem?

i see no reason for students to lie, or at best its a he said, she said situation.
So , what do you have to say about this -
“It appears local Muslims of the area have become adamant not to allow Kaji Masum Akhtar to enter the area as well as the madrasa. Hence, there is every possibility of breach of peace and law and order problem in and around the school and assault on him if the teacher returns to the school even with escort,” the commissioner of police wrote in his report to the member-secretary of West Bengal Minorities’ Commission.

Contacted by HT, Sirajul Islam Mondal, secretary of the managing committee of the madrasa, declined to comment.

According to his wife, Akhtar has been “a victim of progressive thinking” and faced trouble even while trying to make singing the national anthem mandatory before the classes started.

Ok there was another teacher Sudipto Kumar Mondal, whom I thought was a student, echoed the what management and Ferdousi Begum have said.

Because it is the Indian National Anthem?

Yes, but I don't care for tokenism that much. If someone stops anyone from singing national anthem, then it's a criminal offense. However in this perticular case it looks more like he said, she said story and not possible to validate the claim.

For me the bigger concern is, apart from obvious law and order situation - here we have a young, educated, progressive Muslim who is trying to advance his community. Instead of giving him all the support he requires, we are pandering to the religious nuts.

Pandering to religious nuts and isolating progressive never helps, eg Jinnah and Khilafat movement.

but Akhter also claimed that national anthem was also an issue
Think it is to sensationalize the incident, because obviously we wont care if someone is stopped promoting education among muslim girls.:)

Dude people like you voted for Mamata, now enjoy the spectacle. For all their vices commies would never have formed an alliance with Jamat for votebank.
Gandu fellow ........you will remain gandu for whole life ........who said i voted for mamata ??....i hate that b!thc

But question is you here who is defending this incident like a gandu

.
In India, even "Vande Mataram" and "Bharat Mata ki Jay" have religion.....

Only terrorism is secular!!!
