Nation’s honor not to be traded for prosperity: Kayani

.
He uses words like united. one unit, unity many times.
Does he mean that Punjab should not be divided?

Dude, In Pakistan, nothing is possible/Done without army's approval..

Dude, are you in Pakistan? Do you know Pakistan's dynamics? Dude, why are all your posts of this level? Military interfered early, otherwise the government would have let him go back to the US as quickly as they could. It was military interference that stopped that from happening. But, in the end, the military is subservient to the government, and in Pakistan they know that (I don't know about the situation in India), they couldn't go into open confrontation with the government, it was the civilian government, not the military, which approved the release of Raymond Davis. I hope you get that, dude.

There is a problem with Generals making such speeches & it is this - the general is not answerable to the public at large directly. There are no consequences for him directly by the choice of that decision. Honour or prosperity is a false choice as there is no honour in being poor. In any case, such decisions are best left for people who are going to be held accountable by the masses for both their economic condition & for any "dishonorable" acts. This may not seem a very important distinction but it is what prevents Pakistan from being truly democratic. Your political leaders must be held accountable for their decisions but they have to be their own decisions & not ones imposed/articulated by those who do not have to face an election.

Btw, General Kiyani has been himself instrumental in undermining the Pakistani army/ State by accepting an extension of his tenure. There is absolutely no logic to that decision. Surely the Pakistani army has many Generals who can be CoAS. If there are only a couple of them (those receiving extensions) who can do the job then the army & Pakistan itself are in a far worse situation than presently accepted. If the argument of Americans asking for that extension is accepted, then the undermining of Pakistani position on sovereignty has already happened and there is not much point complaining about it now.

If the civilian government, which is supposed to be accountable, is not making these statements, someone will. Generals talk about various issues in such addresses, it wasn't an address to the people, in case you didn't understand that.
With regards to Kayani's extension, the fact is, he is a popular figure, who most people trust and support far more than Zardari or Gilani. He is a strong figure in Pakistan with much influence, and such a person was needed with an insurgency on one of our borders. Its not some normal situation, where command is handed over as is regular.

. . .
The army has no business offering itself up as contender in popularity contests, especially against the political parties. In any case, lack of popularity does not result in the CoAS losing his job by the democratic process of election, something that will happen to a politician.

The military is fighting an insurgency near the porous border of another country in which a full-scale war is going on. I would think that popularity and the people's support is quite important.

So the military gets the credit for popular decisions & the government is left holding the baby if decisions backfire? Nice!

Military said what, for some reason, no one in the government said. Military will get just as much blame, don't worry yourself about that.

Come on now, Kiyani and Pasha met with a US team in Oman to make the deal over RD -- Fauj has had a monopoly on relations with the US and security element of foreign policy.

Kiyani and his Fauj want to be popular, kill the Islamist insurgency, identify the religious party officials who have facilitated the insurgency

.
Where was this Kayani when the Americans were conducting the raid in Abbotabad from where (I presume) he got trained?

Dude, In Pakistan, nothing is possible/Done without army's approval..

I think the recent event has pretty much set back that idea by a few miles.
If one was to compare the impression of the Fauj today.. hints of 71 come about...
