Panic gripped large swathes of northern India on Monday as it felt an earthquake that had its epicentre in Afghanistan and was measured at 7.5 on the Richter scale there.
There were reports of some deaths and many more injuries as people rushed out of buildings and onto the streets.
According to the Met department, the tremors were felt at around 2:27 pm and measured magnitude 4.5 on the Richter scale in Delhi.
However, no immediate loss of life and property was reported from anywhere in the city.
The quake affected the Metro services in the National Capital Region, which were halted for around 15 minutes.
Confusion reigned after the trains shuddered and came to a halt. According to passengers, there was no announcement about the earthquake in the Metro. Passenger Uzmi Athar said, “Even after the services resumed, the Metro was running at a snail’s pace. It took five minutes to cross just one station.”
Expressing readiness, the Delhi government activated its disaster management teams soon after the tremors.
Panic in Kashmir
Monday's tremors brought back memories of the deadly 2005 earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir, as it left three persons dead and 15 others injured, besides damaging property. Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Asgar Samoon confirmed that two elderly women and a boy died due to cardiac arrest in the Anantnag, Baramulla and Reasi districts.
The injured include two army personnel, on whom their bunker collapsed in Sopore in Baramulla district, 55 km from Srinagar. Several houses in the North Kashmir districts of Baramulla and Kupwara were reportedly damaged.
In the capital city Srinagar, the quake forced people — still recovering from the shock of last year’s devastating deluge — to rush out of their homes in the biting cold.
Chanting verses from the Holy Quran, many people reportedly moved towards open spaces barefooted. And immediately after the quake, special prayers were held in several mosques in Srinagar seeking Almighty’s mercy.
The quake also led to panic in overcrowded hospitals in Srinagar and its surrounding areas. At the Valley’s lone tertiary-care hospital SKIMS in Srinagar, chaos was reported as people rushed through seven floors of the ward block. Its narrow exit resulted in disarray as shrieking patients and attendants pushed their way out of the hospital.
Similar scenes were witnessed at G B Pant Hospital, where people were seen running on the road with the children in their laps. The hospitals lone functional exit created a dangerous bottleneck. The hospital has no lawn, and people assembled on the busy highway till the tremors subsided.
While everyone else ran for shelter, SSG commandos raced to rescue Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, who was watching a show at Srinagar's Tagore Hall, a heritage building renovated after last year devastating floods.
Witnesses said as the first tremors hit, many from the audience started running out of the hall, whose first floor was jam-packed. But Mufti sat patiently on his chair, asking others, including Education Minister Naeem Akhter, to calm down and not panic.
Within seconds, however, as the major tremors started shaking the building, the SSG commandos escorting Mufti rushed into the hall and took him out. Witnesses said Mufti was made to sit in his bulletproof car as people ran for cover.
Punjab, Haryana hit
The tremors triggered panic in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh as well. These tremors were by far the strongest felt by people in these states in recent years. Much of Uttarakhand also felt strong tremors.
A 15-year old boy named Nitish sustained a head injury and was rushed to Alchemist Hospital in Panchkula near Chandigarh after he lost his balance and fell while walking up the stairs of a residential high-rise. No major loss of property has so far been reported from these states.
Thousands of people rushed out of their houses as tremors continued for at least 40 seconds. Aftershocks added to the panic. There was commotion in Manali, Shimla, Mandi, Hamirpur, Dalhousie, Chamba and other parts of Himachal Pradesh.
The panic was seen more in high-rises in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Panchkula in Haryana. There were also reports of mobile and landline network disruptions for a brief spell after the earthquake.
A state-level function, underway at an auditorium in Panchkula to mark the Haryana government's one year in office was disrupted by the tremors. Bureaucrats, guests and politicians including Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij rushed out of the auditorium.
The tremors were mild in large parts of Uttar Pradesh, with no report of loss of life or property. No causality was reported from Rajasthan as well, but small cracks have reportedly appeared in several high-rises in the Bharatpur and Jaipur district. Jaipur Metro rail service was also stopped for 10 minutes.
