Well some people make it a fad.. As with most things.. The Beatles made Hinduism a fad.. Made sex guru's and hippies a thing..

Hinduism a fad (widely shared but SHORT LIVED enthusiasm)???? Hinduism is a part of Universe from nearly 5000 thousand years...

is that why well meaning, yet naive well to do westerners look to it?

well that's the demographic for it in New Zealand. White people who are wealthy and are deep thinkers, or more importantly, like to think they are.

Most of them are drawn to Tibetan Buddhism. That is something that would have even confused the Buddha.:D

There is a famous quote attributed to the great Hindu thinker Adi Shankara whose philosophy was a very complicated one called Advaita (non-dualism). When he was asked about the practice of praying to God in temples (something that contradicted with his essential philosophy), he voiced his approval and said " there is no purpose in burdening a man's head with more knowledge than he can handle" (further - praying to God in temples has no effect but is essentially a harmless exercise)

a typical mallu elitist statement. Unfortunately he was not handled by the communists who came in our state :D

yes, with it's rigid hierarchy of peasants and a clerical upper class.

Brahmins centuries ago would enjoy Tibet :D

Well yeah, China has the largest population of Buddhists in the world, by quite an enormous margin.
We also have the largest statue in the world, the Spring Temple Buddha.

From Tabakat-i-Nasiri - Maulana Minhaj-ud-din.

"With its high wall, its large buildings, Nalanda seemed like a well-endowed fortress to Ikhtiyar-ud-din and his force. He advanced upon it with two hundred horsemen “and suddenly attacked the place”. Minhaj-ud-din continues,

“The greater number of inhabitants of that place were Brahmans, and the whole of those Brahmans had their heads shaven, and they were all slain. There were a great number of books there; and when all these books came under the observation of the Musalmans, they summoned a number of Hindus that they might give them information respecting the import of those books; but the whole of the Hindus had been killed. On being acquainted (with the contents of the books), it was found that the whole of that fortress and city was a college, and in the Hindu tongue, they call a college, Bihar [vihara].”

“When that victory was effected,” Minhaj-ud-din reports, “Muhammad-i-Bakhtiyar returned with great booty, and came to the presence of the beneficent sultan, Qutb-ud-din I-bak, and received great honour and distinction…” — so much so that other nobles at the court became jealous. All this happened around the year 1197 AD"

"Brahmans with their heads shaven" of course were Buddhists . This incident perfectly explains why there are almost no historical records of any thing prior to 11th 12th centuries because these illiterate barbarians destroyed everything civilised they saw.
