What's new

Nalanda University reopens after hundreds of years!

Agree to the points. But one cannot simply say 'Buddhism branched out of hinduism'.
Then you've not been to Thailand....
The Hindu deities are in almost every aspect of daily Thai life. There is a Shrine to Shiva at the Erawan Hotel in Bangkok. Erawan (in Thai language) is the Three Headed Elephant belonging to Indra. There is a Ganesha Shrine on the grounds of the World Trade Center as wellas a Shrine to Brahma, in Bangkok.
Not just this, there are many references to Brahma in buddhists texts.Infact in the Buddhist texts Brahma reappears often in the human form of an ageless youth by the name of Pancasikha. There also mentions of Indra as sakka and other gods like varun, agni etc ,of course they are not known by the same name as in hinduism.
This is lord ganesha's statue in Doi Suthep Temple in Chiang Mai,Thailand.

@Bang Galore
That's a bit like claiming Jesus was Judaism's greatest success story. :D
i strongly believe that Buddhism has essentially branched out from hinduism.

.
So even in Theravada school they worshiped Bodhisattva's..
Theravadin Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings were followed by Abhayagiri and Jetavana monasteries. But that traditions later got abolished due to the influence of more conservative Mahavihara monastery which got the political support of the king.

Where did you get the attached picture from?

The Chinese characters say "歓喜天", which is the name of a Japanese elephant God. Originally based on the Hindu deity called Ganesha.
I dont know which site exactly.
But glad that you confirmed it. I wanted to mention you in my previous post but wasnt sure if i should trouble you.Lol

Ganesha is worshiped in Japan too. Are you serious? I thought our only connect was Buddhism but it seems Hinduism reached there as well.

We go for Monkey Gods instead (similar/based on Hanuman), like Sun Wukong.

In Japanese that is pronounced as Son Goku. Which you might be familiar with, if you have heard about Dragonball. :cheesy:

I didnt know about Sun wukong.
Btw lord hanuman was supposed to've swallowed sun in hindu mythology so should the sun in his name(SUN wukong) refer to that incident?

Kangiten - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kangi-ten (Japanese: 歓喜天, "God of Bliss"[1]) is a god (deva or ten) in Shingon and Tendai schools of Japanese Buddhism.[2] He is generally considered the Japanese Buddhist form of the Hindu elephant-headed god of wisdom, Ganesha and is sometimes also identified with the bodhisattvaAvalokiteshvara.[3][2] He is also known as Kanki-ten, Shō-ten (聖天, "sacred god"[3] or "noble god"[4]), Daishō-ten("great noble god"[4]), Daishō Kangi-ten (大聖歓喜天), Tenson (天尊, "venerable god"[4]), Kangi Jizai-ten (歓喜自在天), Shōden-sama,Vinayaka-ten, Binayaka-ten (毘那夜迦天), Ganapatei (誐那缽底) and Zōbi-ten (象鼻天).

This is really interesting..
