A mystery illness in central India has hospitalised at least 300 people and killed one patient.

Symptoms of the unidentified condition in the town of Eluru in Andhra Pradesh include frothing, shivering, nausea and sudden loss of consciousness.

Officials said 300 people had been taken to hospital and one patient had died, reports The Times of India.

The wave of sudden illnesses began on Saturday when 45 people from different localities presented at hospitals and clinics with strange symptoms.

Those hospitalised included 46 children, some of whom started vomiting after complaining of burning eyes, reports the Indian Express.

Local media said all the patients had returned negative COVID-19 tests.

Many patients have been discharged but the cause of the illness has left authorities baffled.

Andhra Pradesh governor Biswa Bhushan Harichandran tweeted that he was concerned and had directed doctors to investigate.
But blood samples have not found any traces of a viral infection, State Health Minister Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas said.

India has been hit by a second wave of coronavirus but it has been ruled out as being behind a mystery illness in one town. (AP)
While food or water contamination has been ruled out, the central government has sent a team of doctors to investigate further.

India is battling a second wave of coronavirus.

Most likely someone has been sticking pollutants in the lake which is then getting into the domestic water supply. Or it could be contaminated food.

They already ruled out food and water contamination.

Most likely scenario. Sounds like chemical poisoning from an irresponsible factory.

TOPLINE At least 345 people in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh have been hospitalized with an unidentified illness that includes a range of symptoms like seizures, nausea, loss of consciousness and has led to at least one fatality — potentially creating another public health challenge as the region continues to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

KEY FACTS
The outbreak of the illness has centered around the town of Eluru, with the sole fatality being a 45-year-old man, who died on Sunday.

The cause of the illness has yet to be established but local authorities said that all patients, currently 345, have tested negative for Covid-19, ruling it out as a possible cause, the Hindustan Times reported.

YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the state’s chief minister, visited the patients on Monday while the regional opposition party has accused him and his government of mishandling the situation while suggesting that the illness may have been caused by contaminated water supply.

The government, however, has claimed that water samples from the affected areas showed no signs of contamination and no viral infections were detected among the patients.

CHIEF CRITIC
Calling the situation in Eluru just “the tip of an iceberg,” former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and current opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu accused the government of negligence, tweeting: “Can there be a more unfortunate & bigger failure than this? The Eluru water contamination incident calls for a declaration of Health Emergency in Andhra Pradesh.”

BIG NUMBER
871,972: That’s the total number of cases of Covid-19 the state of Andhra Pradesh has recorded so far making it the third worst-hit state in India. The state has recorded 7,033 deaths from the disease. India has the second-highest number of Covid-19 infections after the U.S., with 9.6 million cases as of Monday, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

KEY BACKGROUND
Earlier this year, 11 people died in Andhra Pradesh after a chemical gas from a factory run by LG Polymers leaked near the city of Visakhapatnam. Thousands of people had reported being sick after the incident and hundreds had been admitted to hospitals, with some needing to go on ventilators. The incident had forced the state to divert resources like ambulances, away from Covid-19 cases to help treat those affected by the leak.

Covid fully exposed India's woefully inadequate health system. Now they can't diagnose anything about this deadly new disease. Goodness knows whether it's infectious or due to some poison. Just keep the whole nation of Hindustan in some sort of permanent quarantine dome so the rest of us can live in safety.

Ironically, pakistanis are ridiculing Indian health system now when we clearly know the health tourism that India gets from pakistan and the rest of the world. US has the top healthcare facilities in the world despite high costs but still tops the list of covid cases. The spread of covid is more about mismanagement rather than availability healthcare facilities and competency of our healthcare system

Secondly, this isn't an infectious viral disease like Covid but is presumed to be something related to water contamination. Again, more details are yet to emerge

Well you remain the "cheap and cheerful" option for some losers sure. This doesn't correlate with quality of healthcare provision in the slightest.

Plenty of nawaz sharif chamchay types still live and prosper in Pakistan, always looking to build bridges towards our east. Funnily enough,I used to believe aman ki asha was possible with you filth. Now - after what you tried to pull off in 2019 - i feel dirty just speaking to you.

"mmmmy health care system tourism NOOOOOO" - you

How's the tourism for Indians dying of covid? I wouldn't trust an Indian's word on a possible new pandemic, fake news is embedded deep in Indian society!

With all the loans, bailouts and begging..."Cheap & Competent" healthcare is exactly what your broke arse country needs. Regarding the quality of healthcare, check with those who had treatment in India rather than spurting out hatred. India consistently ranks among the top-5 countries for medical tourism

The rest of your response isn't remotely related to my post nor the thread's topic. It blindly reflects your hatred but all I can say is the feeling is mutual

For God sake stop believing everything you read at whatsapp university daily Pakistan brief. I can take you to hospitals in Pakistan with equipment and expertise identical to what we have in western Europe. Anyone sensible in Pakistan who can afford it will prefer to pay Pakistanis. Pakistani services are poorly marketed and perhaps priced unfairly. Yes, economics is certainly the problem. Expertise and technology in the health sector aren't.

Looks like you got serious comprehension issues. When'd I even comment on pakistani healthcare for you to get defensive??

I only responded to your ridiculous claims on Indian healthcare system...
