VARANASI: A day before the beginning of the hearing in triple talaq case by the Supreme Court on May 10, a group of Muslim women and activists of Muslim Mahila Foundation (MMF) had invoked Lord Hanuman at Patal Puri mutt in the city, praying to the deity to end this "social evil". They also recited 'Hanuman Chalisa' 108 times to appease the deity and "end this practice ruining the lives of Muslim women".
On Tuesday, believed to be the auspicious day of the deity, when a five-judge Supreme Court bench set aside the practice of triple talaq asking the Centre to bring a legislation in this connection wit hin six-months, these women said they believe that Lord Hanuman has bestowed his blessings upon them.
Glued to TV screen at Varuna Nagaram colony in Hukulganj area, the women were waiting eagerly for the court's decision. Soon after the SC's decision was aired, they distributed sweets and broke into celebrations by bursting crackers. They termed the decision revolutionary to save the dignity of women.
"We are happy that our prayers have been heard. Today is the day of freedom for Muslim women from the inhuman practice of triple talaq," said MMF president Nazneen Ansari, who has been spearheading the struggle since December 2013
