A Muslim father's unwavering support for his teenage daughter if she chose to not wear a hijab has grabbed online attention.

Lamyaa, 17, in Pennsylvania, US tweeted a screengrab of a conversation with her father in Saudi Arabia who said he would support her "no matter what" after she told him she was considering removing her hijab.

This happened after a boy in a group chat told Lamyaa that her father would likely beat her were she to take off her headscarf.

Lamyaa told the BBC that she did not actually intend to take her scarf off: "It was never part of the plan. I just wanted to prove a point."

While some supported her father's reaction, others said they did not have the same choice to voluntarily remove the scarf.

Commenting on how it all started, Lamyaa said: "I had very strong views considering the impact the Trump presidency has on me because I am an Arab, Muslim woman. I brought up the fact that I was Muslim [in the group chat] and that guy didn't feel comfortable so he said what he said.

"When I saw how sweet my dad's response was I felt that this proved something; it proved that misconceptions are often made about people who end up being the exact opposite."

Many messaged Lamyaa support following her post, and she added that some even said it changed their views on the hijab.

"Your dad is perfect and so are you," Twitter user @LorraineE_C told her.

Twitter user @cassiiealvarado told Lamyaa not to take off her hijab, with @mochamomma adding: "I love this whole thing. There's trust and mutual respect and, above all, love."

But others were critical, with one Twitter user saying there were "countless" girls who wanted to take their veils off but did not have the choice to do so.

In response, Lamyaa tweeted: "A lot of people mistook this tweet as my saying no women are forced to wear hijab...that was not the point of the tweet.

"Yes, a lot of women are forced to wear the hijab. That's horrible and I have been one to point that out numerous times."

She continued to highlight her own choice: "I personally choose to wear the hijab, for myself and for God."

As for there being "no option". Yes there in fact two options. To wear a hijab or not to wear a hijab. Such options are to be taken by the individual in question. It cannot be forced on that individual in this case as we are talking about a girl who studies in the US. Also what would you do as a father if your teenage daughter said that she would not wear her hijab anymore? Cut all contact with her or prove that you are standing with her (and possibly educate her why she is wrong or correct) and such issues can be solved/discussed as father and daughter?

So this article basically proves the Islamophobes wrong in the West and their scaremongering, namely that Saudi Arabian/Arab/Muslim girls who study abroad are forced to wear a headscarf by their parents and if they do not comply with this they get beaten. It also shows that the girl's point was proven to be correct.

Hijab is compulsory in Islam what her father should have told her is to decide whether she wants to be Muslim or not and if she wants to be called Muslim than Hijab is compulsory.

.
^^The Quran doesn't mandate the hijab. End of story. The Quran only says that men and women should dress modestly and cover their private parts.

Really sad if true. But more importantly I hope Muslims reading this article do NOT fail to detect the subtext of this cringe worthy tweet which is to promote a western liberal agenda. This tweet is sending a basic message promoting stereotypical western anti-islamic narrative about Muslim society :

- Muslim men are oppressive control freaks and this father parroting liberal feminist vernacular is one rare exceptional good guy.

- Women refusing to abide by Islamic principles are courageous brave hearts.

- Muslim women are forced to wear the hijab.

And how come the father in question is using very convenient feminist vernaculars like "no man's decision". Its as if he was waiting for her daughter to ask this question about hijab.

As I said, if this tweet is true then its truly sad. How can a father congratulate his daughter on disobeying Allah (swt) and His messenger (peace & blessings of Allah be upon him)? Its one thing to be understanding and kind to your daughter BUT its totally different scenario if you do NOT even bother to inform your daughter about right & wrong. And YES its definitely the job of parents to impart islamic values and beliefs to their children. Its part of the responsibility parents are entrusted with and for which parents (both mother & father) would be answerable to Allah (swt) on the day of judgement.

my dear brother , i did understand on what context she made up the conversation...however we muslims are'nt made to prove ourselves to those empty headed western extremists who blindly follow corrupt media and accpet what is being displayed..my saying was that the reply could be something like . " my dear , hijab is a compulsory on muslim men and women in their forms. as you are my dear daughter , i want good for you so please try to stick with it "

says who , who in other thread called hijab to be just a cultural shit

Check this clown out. Apparently taking Hijab off makes you a non Muslim.
its ur clownish thinking that made you think like that

Yes it does mandate the Hijab if you don't know or understand Arabic properly than it's your issue. Not a single scholar in 1400 years has said this what you are saying. I really wish one of the Caliph would have been alive you tell this to them on there face.

Everyone who thinks Islam forces or oppress women pls read this article.

When did Allah say i will burn women if they don't wear hijab?
Such stupid claims give a bad image to religion. Muslim women don't become pagans if they don't wear hijab.

Ap mere bhai jitna bhi doosro ko convince karne mein time barbad karogay wo witni hi excuses banate rahenge islam ke khilaf...so no point in showing this article...they are ignorant from the time of Prophet S.A ...romans i am talking about..they will never change...they will always make new shits about our religion

This was written in a private chat and later picked up on social media and afterwards it became news. Apparently such big news that BBC posted it as well.

Moreover I do not agree with your view of Muslim women ceasing to be Muslim if they do not wear a hijab. In such a case millions of people in your own country, Pakistan, are not really Muslim.

I have seen many photos of Pakistan women in public in Pakistan who do not wear any headscarfs.

You should refrain from such bombastic comments as the ratio of women wearing headscarfs in KSA, Arab world and Middle East is significantly higher than the one in South Asia. Yet I would not make such a bold claim that millions of South Asian Muslim women who do not wear a hijab, are non-Muslim.
