Muslim Azerbaijan: Bucking the Anti-Semitic Trend in Europe | Commentary

For many years, we have defended Jews in what are now the 15 independent states of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

Today, we’re as concerned about intolerance and extremism as we’ve ever been.

As happens so often in times of turmoil, Jews are becoming the scapegoats for economic, social and political instability, as well as the conflicts in the Middle East. Anti-Semitic incidents are increasing alarmingly, not only in Eastern Europe but also in France, Germany, Belgium and even the Scandinavian countries.

From the fatal shootings at the Jewish Museum in Belgium to the fire-bombing of a synagogue in Germany, recent headlines recall the horrors of the past.

There has long been broad bipartisan support in Congress for the State of Israel. That same spirit should be applied to Israel’s close allies, especially in light of all the challenges that Israel currently faces.

In one former Soviet Republic, in South Eastern Europe, on the Caspian Sea, there is a remarkable exception to the rising tide of anti-Semitism – the secular, moderate, Muslim-majority nation of Azerbaijan.

With a new Congress taking shape, now is the time for Congress’ many friends of Israel to learn more about Azerbaijan, where the Jewish community recently celebrated the High Holy Days in peace and with official greetings from President Ilham Aliyev. Once they do, they will see that Azerbaijan is an example for other countries to follow with respect to supporting Israel.

Having lived in Azerbaijan for 2,500 years without persecution and numbering some 35,000, the country’s Jewish community enjoys full dignity, respect and religious freedom. As the Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Rafi Harpaz, said at a meeting in New York City on September 22, unlike in European countries, there is no anti-Semitism in Azerbaijan.

Praising Azerbaijan’s tolerance in the midst of turbulence, Harpaz declared, “Azerbaijan can be a model for other countries in terms of attitudes towards Jews.” In fact, Harpaz is the sixth Israeli ambassador to Azerbaijan, which has maintained diplomatic relations with Israel for 22 years.

Azerbaijan’s tradition of peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Christians and Jews, as well as its role as a bridge-builder between East and West, exemplify its unique and essential role on the international stage.

A rarity among nations with Muslim majorities, Azerbaijan maintains strong diplomatic, economic and military ties with Israel. In an example of their close relationship, Azerbaijan and Israel plan to implement visa-free travel for those with diplomatic passports traveling between the two countries.

Azerbaijani-Israeli links extend beyond diplomacy to economics and security. Azerbaijan supplies 40 percent of Israel’s oil needs through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. Israel is Azerbaijan’s third largest trading partner, with commerce between the two countries totaling $4 billion.

On the security front, Azerbaijan is acquiring 12 Coast Guard vessels from Israel, adding to the $1.6 billion in high-tech weapons it has purchased from Israel since 2012.

The new Congress should do all it can to support allies that are deepening their security, economic, and diplomatic relations with the State of Israel. A strong congressional statement in support of Azerbaijan’s strategic energy role — which helps both Israel and Europe — would show Azerbaijan much-needed US support in the face of regional pressures from the likes of neighboring Iran.

Its like the jews are whining that there is no reason for current anti semitism and we should all be friends

the jews have never been persecuted in the islamic world like they have in the white Christian

todays hatred of the jews in much of the muslim world is a direct result of their occupation of Palestine and horrendous treatment of muslims their

If a jew was on fire I wouldn't piss on him to put him out that is how much their actions in Palestine have incensed me

if they don't want hate from muslims then they need to support the creation of Palestine before the population of arab/muslims becomes so large that israel will crack or become a apartheid state

Unfortunately there is not a clear enough line between Jews and Israelis in many people's eyes which Zionists use to label sane people as Anti-Semitic. And unfortunately money comes before morals in the eyes of some countries such as Azerbaijan.

What are you talking about? Have these muslims cared when we were invaded by Armenia? unlike muslims, Israelis helped us in Karabagh war. Also part of our land is occupied by Armenia. has any Palestinian cared about it? then, why should I care about them. BTW, unlike the so called Palestinians who lived for a short time on the jews homeland, Karabagh has been our homeland for a long time. Badmouthing Azerbaijan is not helping you.

That's a big lie.

mass massacre?!!! o_O Palestinians are proud that they have one of the fastest population growth rates in the world. Also, 20% of Israelis are arabs, and their language is an official language, and there is no discriminations against them. Funny point is that palestinians on average, are living much better than most muslims of islamic countries  BTW, have you wondered why no palestinians cares for Kashmir? Then why do you care for them, who already receive the most aid per capita in the world.

I don't know. Humanity maybe. Also, I'm sure the Palestinians are, as you suggest, delighted to have had their land stolen by foreigners and become 2nd rate citizens on their own soil.

Anyhow, can't argue about Azerbaijan's stance on Israel. You have evidently benefited much, as compared to the countries that decided to oppose it.

So, it's not the fault of the Muslims? And with this logic, does this mean that Christians, Jews, and other minorities is justified by what militants are doing in the Middle East, Africa, and South East Asia?

I have sympathy for Palestinians but we shouldn't forget the Palestinian flag was the flag of the Arab rebellion. The flag was designed by the UK and their revolt too. Later on they got double crossed by the British and their land given to the Jews. Own fault. No way to change this now. Iran is using Palestinian question as political tool. I don't believe they reeally care about them since they are not Shia.

The Arabs, Indians, and Africans were unfortunate to live during a time where the world was much more connected and controlled than before, with major powers dominated almost all fronts. It became more necessary and easier to get outsider support, and it would be foolish to reject any.

Palestinians need to be vigilant about the ones who are supporting them. Iran does not care about Shiite Azerbaijan or Hazara Afghans, let alone caring for some sunni Arabs. Palestinians leaders are either corrupt or sell outs or extremists. that's the problem of Palestinians. They need to find a solution which both, jewish and arab, sides can agree on it. Instead of firing useless rockets, they need to support the Two-states solution of USA. I do believe that both sides are enough tired from these conflicts that they are finally ready to accept a new realistic solution.

Happy to see atleast some Muslim countries who are not awash with mindless hate. Keep it up Azerbaijan, may your countrymen lead the region in bringing peace and prosperity!

The Palestinian Arabs and the Israelis did agree on a solution in the Oslo Accords. The Palestinian Arabs simply decided to change the meaning of language and the truth of events afterward. They know that no one outside Israel and America will hold them to it - when was the last time you decried Arab murders of innocent Israelis as criminal? There you go.
