ISLAMABAD: The disclosure made by retired General Pervez Musharraf in his 2006 autobiography that Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan transferred sensitive nuclear material to North Korea had come as a big embarrassment to the country, an official of the Foreign Office said on Friday at a meeting of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee.

The disclosure had forced the Foreign Office on the defensive and left it with no choice but to regurgitate the standard response that Pakistan was firmly against nuclear proliferation, the additional secretary said.

Foreign diplomats viewed the statement with scepticism and disbelief, he added.

The Foreign Office reply came in response to a question by Senator Farhatullah Babar as to what was North Korea’s official reaction to Pervez Musharraf’s revelation in his memoir, In the Line of Fire, that a clandestine proliferation network operating from Pakistan had transferred nearly two dozen centrifuge machines, a flow meter and some special oils to North Korea.

“Had such an irresponsible disclosure been made by a civilian minister or a bureaucrat, he would have been sent to the gallows, but Musharraf got away with it because he was a general,” Senator Farhatullah observed.

The official reaction to Pervez Musharraf’s disclosures would help this committee better understand “the nature and depth” of Pakistan-North Korea relations, he added.

The committee was also briefed on Islamabad’s relations with Tokyo and the government’s position on territorial disputes in the Strait of Malacca.

The meeting, chaired by Senator Nuzhat Sadiq, was attended by Senators Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Shibli Faraz, Dr Karim Khawaja, Tahir Hussain Mashhadi and Farhatullah Babar.

I agree Musharraf is a bloody liar, in fact one only has to read his book of self aggrandizement "In the line of fire", I was astonished to hear some of his outlandish claims, he immediately lost all credibility in my eyes their and then, I recall reading the chapter on nuclear proliferation, Mushy stated that the head of the CIA, had a one on one meeting with him, where the head of the CIA had shown Mushy technical drawings of centrifuges, Mushy claimed that he "IMMEDIATELY" recognized these as Pakistani centrifuges my instant reaction was, how on Earth could this non technical person Mushy immediately ascertain whether these were centrifuges let alone Pakistani centrifuges secondly Mushy claimed that during the Kargill war Pak had not achieved nuclear weaponisation which the Yanks had assumed we did, God only knows the truth as Gen Hamid Gul and Aslam Baig all claimed Pak had weaponised it's devices during their tenure, whatever the truth Mushy had harmed the nature of our detterence, for this I can never ever forgive him, he should be shown the gallows.

He ruined Pakistan already terrible reputation I won't forgive him so easily either but I must eventually.

the state normally has plausible deniability in such secret dealings but when proofs are presented to the leaders along with the admissions of others then its hard to deny that.

in 2003, the North Koreans had already disclosed to the UN inspectors about their capability and back to back admissions along with blue prints of 2000 P-1 centrifuges of Pakistani origin were presented by the Americans to the Pakistanis leaving us no choice but to admit that indeed it was our stuff. there was simply no room to deny or cover up since not 2 but 3 different sources had pointed figures at Pakistan for their sudden rise in nuclear capability.

so in short it is not the Book of Musharaf that has embarrassed Pakistan as per Musharraf's arch rival Nawaz party claim but actually us being found out due to the disclosures of North Koreans, Iranians and Libyans whether AQ did it with or without military help and how greedy or evil Musharraf is pointless to discuss.

Although I don't entirely believe that AQ khan is entirely to blame and he was running a clandenstine opertion to supply the technology to Iran, Libya and N Korea... but then again.. when he was "forced" to make a confession and did so for the national interest then why he then started to threaten with going public and spill the state secrets? a selfless hero who first claims to have sacrificed himself for the sake of the nation then doesnt hold it hostage with blackmailing. everyone at such a position is signatory to nondisclosure and any such revelation that is contrary to that oath carries a very serious punishment.

that said. I must point out some loopholes in Musharraf's assertions. my innocent and simpleton Pakistanis make their opinion on the bases of their liking and disliking and that clouds their judgement. I am told here that they believe Musharaf is a sellout and a lair so they don't believe him (an allegation becomes a reason) but don't bother to explain why.

I read his book and went through the Nuclear proliferation passage carefully and found some interesting bits that beg some explanation.

it is claimed that Pakistan's deal with north Korea for their missile technology didn't involve nuclear technology in return but hard cash. (strange in its own right because North Korean tech has Chinese origin so why not go back to source instead?). secondly AQ Khan was allegedly running an undercover program to transfer the technology unknown to Pakistani establishment (but what in return?) if it wasnt the missile technology then what? North Korea has always been poor in terms of cash and I dont know if it could even afford to pay for secret nuclear tech without knowledge of Pakistani establishment and it will be stretching it too much to argue that the payments received from missile tech from Pakistan was paid back to AQ Khan secretly to get nuclear technology since the timeline and complexity of such proceeds wont be compatible to exist in same time frame. my take is that AQ Khan was a known front man and Pakistani establishment was complicit in this. lets face it that running the Nuclear program is not cheap so Iranian and Libyan cash might have been officially received to keep the program running and just share some old / discarded technology with them.

Sure, let's apply some logic. I use a private investigator to get me pictures of weapon designs sitting in your locker inside your house. You are already a well known weapon designer, so no issues. I then insinuate that you have been sharing them with my enemies. In a court of law, you still have plausible deniability. If I bring me known enemies as witnesses to the case, I can be accused of bribery, or coersion. No one can know the truth for certain, but after the AQ Khan admission on TV on Feb 4, 2004 (http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/02/04/pakistan.nuclear.timeline.reut/) the world knew of Pakistan’s complicity 2 years before Musharraf’s book was published.

No one can say that Musharraf is an angel. You could accuse him of sacrificing AQ Khan (a hero of Pakistan), but one has to be fair. Why accuse Musharraf of disclosing something in his biography that the whole world already knew!

I am sorry but I don’t think it is a good idea to continue in the state of denial? Unlike the insinuation in the first post, IMO Musharraf did not reveal any secret nor is he guilty of any crime.
