Trying all the cases could take years. Gen Musharraf would be wise to sidestep the issue as soon as he is allowed to, and leave.

Something does seem to be cooking behind the scenes. We've had one lawyer withdraw his complaint this week against the judges detention case which appeared unusual.

Given the international guarantors who were keen, and are still keen to avoid a prolonged mess, an excuse may be drawn up. His 95 year old mother who is in Dubai could be exploited for that reason.

Nawaz will be in power in a few weeks time, and I'm sure he doesn't quite fancy lurching from all the present issues into a head on personal face-off with Musharraf.

To avoid any friction there, and with the military, it may be the best decision for all to have Musharraf exit under the cover of the night. However, whether he wants to stay on and take on the cases needs to be seen.

Whatever happens, he's a complete nightmare to manage from a security standpoint, and will sap a lot of headlines and energy when more pressing issues are at hand for the new government.
