Mumbai struggles to catch up with Shanghai Mar 16, 2005
By Siddharth Srivastava

NEW DELHI - The one difference between development -............................................old rant................

There is a reason for me to post this article dated back in 2005, cos i found so many predictions regarding India's future, its getting really annoying indeed, some could be talking about 2050. Now a prediction, a grand promise your PM made back in 2004 that in 5 yrs, people will forget about Shanghai and Mumbai will become the focal point, now its 2010, 7 yrs later, what happen ? Time to Wake-up

No, the reason for your post is to start fanboy flame war and nothing else.

Now if you really want to know the reason why we cannot make Mumbai something like Shanghai so quickly, check out the following success story of the communist party in Shanghai:

China silences women housing rights activists ahead of Shanghai Expo, News, Amnesty International Australia - Working to Protect Human Rights

Forced evictions began on a large scale in Shanghai in 2000. Starting from 2005, the Shanghai Expo coordinating bureau began relocating nearly 20,000 people from the central Shanghai site that it plans to use only for the six-month duration of Expo 2010. The Shanghai Expo site has displaced 18,000 households, according to its own figures.

Shen Pelan, who lives in Minhang district, has been detained nearly 100 times since 2000.

“At least 3,000 families are victims of Minhang district demolition. They are so poor that many have no place for shelter. Some rent a very small room without a toilet. I really can not stand to see people live like this and not speak out,” she told Amnesty International.

Mao Hengfeng has been repeatedly detained by the authorities for her work defending women’s reproductive rights, as well as victims of forced evictions.

She was given 18 months Re-education Through Labour on 4 March 2010 for taking part in a peaceful demonstration in support of imprisoned human rights activist Liu Xiaobo.

On top you insult the evictees by the forced labour = re-education.

Congratulations on Shanghai!!

he blames the problem on "democracy". however i'm not seeing the difference. any poor person can be persuaded to move with enough money. i don't think the mumbai government can't afford to give 10000 USD to whoever is in the way to move out. in china people are paid to move away.

Yeahhh... here count the money they got.

“What’s the point if a few of us live well and shut our mouths but the government continues to abuse other citizens creating more broken families and poverty and pushing people outside the city to give their land to the richest businessmen. Many who seek justice through law face detention and torture in custody. What we ask for is not a personal settlement, but public justice,” said Mao Hengfeng.

Duan Chunfang and her brother began petitioning the authorities after her home was demolished in 2000. They were severely beaten by police in 2006 and her brother, Duan Huimin, was sentenced to 13 months of Re-education Through Labour. He died two days after being released, allegedly because of injuries sustained through torture while in detention.

Duan Chunfang is currently serving an 18-month sentence for “obstructing official business”. She is being denied medical treatment for her deteriorating health and heart condition. Her family suspects she is being beaten in detention.

In March 2010, Shen Peilan was detained in the same police detention centre where Duan Chunfang is illegally being held.

"She is so ill. It is so cold there, freezing winds blow through her cell and she suffers from headaches and cannot open her eyes. Police have cut off all the zippers and buttons of her clothes, claiming this is to prevent her from hiding anything dangerous. How can a middle age woman who is in poor health threaten the authorities so much?" said Shen Peilan.

Stupid comparison.

Mumbai can only dream to become a Shanghai in terms of vast infrastructure and facilities.

Shanghai can only dream to become a Mumbai with it's Human rights and Equality for citizen.

Where do you want to live? Take your pick.

Thousands of homes destroyed to make way for Olympic tourists - Times Online

YE GUOZHU used to own two restaurants in Beijing. Both were razed in 2001, as was his home in the Yongdingmen district of the city two years later, to make way for parks to beautify the Chinese capital for the 2008 Olympics.
Last year Mr Ye sought permission to protest against such forced evictions. He was arrested for “disturbing social order” and sentenced in December to four years in jail. His family have not seen him since and do not know where he is held.

Please give me a break, you will be like fighting a losing battle when trying your best to compare China with India, you know very well what type of a ... hole you live in, i could bring up tons of you embarrass data on the table, now first solve your sanitation crisis and then comback and talk to me, you have more than 60% chance still need to def.... in the open.

The bottom line is trolling get you no where, Mumbai still a mess comparing with Shanghai, your PM already proved to the world what a fool he was for making such a "Fantasy"claim period.

There's no need to sugar coat things, China's way of doing things has plenty of advantages but also plenty of disadvantages. The key difference here is that on one side, no one's rights can be violated, while on the other side, few's rights can be violated for the good of the whole. India chose the former, and China has obviously chosen the latter.

Which is better? I don't know. Democracy should ensure better internal security as it allows everyone's voice to be heard, but the Chinese socialism should be better at maintaining long term vision as it can make the necessary short term, unpopular sacrifices.

Trolling was your objective and that is why you brought up the old news to feed your noodly ego.

No, our Sardar was only setting sights on a objective for our nation and we will get there.

If you want to know a real and foolish mess that a leader can make, read more about your Great Leap here:

Stefan Landsberger's Chinese Propaganda Poster Pages--Great Leap Forward

By early 1959, it became clear that things were running out of hand. As a result of the massive production drives in steel and agriculture, both the production and transport sectors had become severely dislocated. The reality of the Great Leap Forward corresponded less and less with the picture painted in the reports to the leadership. Some leaders, including Chen Yun, started to express cautious warnings about the results of this "fever in the brain" which held China in its sway, while the more radical officials continued to proclaim imaginary victories in production.

And if you want to bring up sanitation or whatever your communist party has taught you, please feel free. It is okay with us. We will not get you in to re-education.

Let us see what you got buddy.
