Today is the trial run for the country's first Monorail Rail in Mumbai.

Just 1 monorail coach FOR R-DAY TRAILER

Train To Move At 5-10 Km/Hr On 200 Metre Wadala Track

Chittaranjan Tembhekar | TNN

Mumbai: The much-touted monorail test drive on Republic Day will be little more than just a public show as just one coach of the four-coach train, assembled at Wadala, will run on Tuesday before chief minister Ashok Chavan. Moreover, it will run on a small 90-100 metre stretch of the track at a speed of just 5 to 10 km per hour. The minimum speed required to test the vehicle is 35-40 km per hour and it has a maximum speed of 90 km per hour.

“We will run it at a speed of 5 to 10 km per hour on January 26,” said A Ponnudurai, a Malaysian engineer of Indian origin, who will drive the country’s first monorail. He has already conducted the test run of the same rake in Malaysia.

“The vehicle was tried and tested on a one km U-shaped track at Rawang in Malaysia where the monorail car manufacturing unit of SCOMI is situated. Later the car was dismantled and sent to India. Ponnudurai came recently to Mumbai to re-assemble the car for Tuesday’s show,” senior MMRDA officials working on the project told TOI. The car was initially supposed to run on a 1-km track, but the track ready at Wadala is hardly 200 metres on either side. “It will run to and fro on a single track and will not be moved to another parallel track. A temporary power connection has been taken from the Wadala casting yard of the monorail project,” revealed an officer at the site office.

Ponnudurai, a lead motorman and engineer with SCOMI, the Malaysian monorail manufacturer, will also be responsible for selection and training of new drivers and special mechanics of the Mumbai monorail. Team of SCOMI and L&T officers and technicians led by Suhaimi Yaacob and M Y Saini are working hard to achieve the November deadline for the first phase of the monorail between Wadala and Chembur.

Meanwhile, MMRDA officials maintained that the entire 400-metre track (200 metres on either side) was ready and that there will be a proper trial run of the train on Tuesday.

Mumbai Monorail has long way to go.
Good thing is that the beginning has been done.

. . .
Mumbai is also getting a Metro so where does the Monorail come in the picture?

The Metro when it finishes construction will cover the entire Mumbai so why are they building a monorail in parallel?

.
I wonder, how can such a tiny monorail can handle passanger load of millions of people? because sturdy local trains have a hard time to handle the same. Anyway, such monorail can provide good alternative to mumbaikers to take short cut route instead of opting for a congested roads.

Considering the increase in population, increased travel demand and narrow road networks running through congested structures, there is a need of a system which will occupy less space as well as reduce travel time.

With the objective, to support public rapid transit system such as suburban rail system and metro rail system and where public rapid transit system is not available or impossible to provide such system and where widening of roads is not possible due to structures on either sides

Monorail is for intercity transportation. In fact it is a very succesful model worldwide. It is aptly suited for a congested city like Mumbai as it occupies very less space and requires like little rehablitaion.

Deadline for first phase of completion is Dec-2010.
2nd phase will be completed by 2011.

This monorail will complement the existing suburban local trains as well as the upcoming Metro rail systems.

The above monorail will run between Wadala and Chembur.(near to my college:cool: :smokin:)

Already plans are on for few other routes like Kalyan-Bhiwandi-Thane which will be even bigger spanning 50kms.The tenders will be out in a month or so.

1. In Monorail System train runs on a narrow Guideway Beam, wheels of which are gripped laterally on either side of the beam.

2. Monorail is a Light Weight System and its cost of execution is less compared to heavy rail systems and it takes approximately 1.5 to 2 years for execution.

3. Mono rail System requires 1.00 m wide space (Column Size 0.8 m X 1.5 m) the space of a footpath or a divider and it rests on a single pillar of height 6.5 m without disturbing the existing traffic.

4. Capacity of 4 car Monorail System is 8000 to 12000 PHPD.
5. Monorail System can achieve ± 6 % gradient and turning radius upto 50 m.

6. As compared to other systems Monorail produces less noise and is eco-friendly and hence easily acceptable in dense residential locale.

7. Monorail System is in use in Tokyo (Japan) from 1963, in Kuala-Lumpur (Malaysia) for last 5 years and in china for last 3 years.

8. Monorail System is Safe and reliable system.

Mumbai Monorail to be commissioned by year-end

Mumbai, Jan 26 (PTI) Engineering major Larsen & Toubro and Malaysia's Scomi Group are expected to commission the first phase of Mumbai Monorail, India's first such system, by end of this year.

The Rs 2,460-crore project, an initiative of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), is a modern urban transport where cars move on a single beam in an elevated corridor.

The project involves design, construction, installation, testing and commissioning from Wadala and Chembur via Mahul (approximately 9 kilometres) in Phase I and Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Wadala (approximately 11 kilometres) in Phase II.

"Phase I, from Wadala to Chembur, is expected to be completed and commissioned by this year-end. The second phase is expected to be completed by December 2011," L&T's Executive vice-president & Head--Corporate Initiatives, Shailendra Roy told reporters here.

He was speaking at the monorail's trial run, which was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.

Scomi eyes Indian partners for monorail projects
T E Narasimhan / Chennai January 25, 2010, 0:03 IST

Malaysia-based Scomi International is scouting for partners to tap the monorail market in India, which is estimated to be around $15 billion (Rs 72,000 crore) in the next five years.

The company, along with L&T, has bagged the Rs 2,450-crore order from the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority for the Mumbai monorail project.

Speaking to Business Standard, Kanesan Veluppillai, president, Scomi International, who was here as part of the delegation led by the Malaysian Prime Minister, said “we are betting big on India’s monorail business.”

The first monorail will have its first trial run on January 26 for five kilometres. It will run for six months. “There is a potential for another 100 km,” he added.

“We will partner L&T to bid for projects in Maharashtra. Pune will be the next city to call for bids for the monorail project," he said.

In Karnataka, the company has tied up with Bangalore-based Geodysid and is looking for one more infrastructure company to be part of the consortium to bid for the Karnataka project.

The Delhi government too has identified three potential lines for which a Rail India Technical and Engineering Services study was done. The state government is expected to call for the bid after the Commonwealth Games,” said Veluppillai.

The company has also recommended the Tamil Nadu Government to consider monorail as part of its traffic master plan for the cities including Chennai, Madurai and Tiruchy, as pilot.

Scomi has invested $15 million (around Rs 35 crore) for setting up a manufacturing facility in Malaysia with a capacity of 200 coaches, most of which will be exported to India.

“We will set up a manufacturing unit in India after we bag two more orders from India,” said Veluppillai. He added the company has already started looking at states for setting up the facility, which will attract an initial investment of around Rs 150-200 crore.
