MUMBAI: On the occasion of Maharashtra Day, Mumbaikars were treated to a successful trial run of the state's first Metro railway Wednesday.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan flagged off the 3-km long trial run of the Mumbai Metro between Versova and Azad Nagar in north Mumbai's Andheri suburb.

The section is a part of the 11.40km Versova-Ghatkopar corridor which will provide a vital east-west link and drastically reduce travel time from the existing 90 minutes to barely 20 minutes.

Chavan said that the Versova-Ghatkopar line will become operational by December.

He said the Metro would be extended to the adjacent Thane district and work on a separate monorail project expedited.

The Mumbai Metro's Versova-Ghatkopar first phase is being constructed at a cost of around Rs 2,356 crore by a Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium on behalf of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The Metro sector is an elevated corridor supported by columns at the road median and will enable connectivity of eastern-western suburbs to the Western Railway and Central Railway.

The MMRDA plans to provide an interchange facility within the two railway networks at Ghatkopar and Andheri.

I am scared of this metro man. Remember? A section of the metro line fell off during last years rains near Sakinaka. Luckily no operations started by then.

very good news. hope it starts serving Mumbai in august, as per schedule

Great to see this. The importance of this project is not just transportation ease but also revenue generation. Almost 13 cities in India are either having U/c metros of soon to open metros.

Delhi metro phase 1 costed about 2.5 billion which has already been recovered in first 6 yrs of operation. Surprisingly, according to pre feasibility studies metro was supposed to carry 25 lack commuters per day. It only carried 6-8 lacks still all the investment was recovered in 6 yrs.

No wonder now all cheif ministers want these swanky metros in their cities ;). They also dont wanna miss the chance to cash into Indian booming middle class. Moreover, it helps helps them to get more votes.

Indian industry is also benefitted by this metro boom. Alstom now has a new factory in India in Sri City Sez and so does Bombardier, Beml is manufacturing its own metro trains with transfer of tech from Hyundai and Mitsubishi.

All in all Win wih for everyone

congrats.is it the fifth line of mumbai ?

can someone tell me how metro will be different from the mumbai local trains ....they essentially seem the same

congrats to India but i have 1 question for you how does chief misters or politicians cash into booming middle class ? just for you information These kinds of projects are always loss leaders and never ever generate revenue.

Have you ever been to mumbai?? or have travelled in mumbai local train?? This metro would be make a lot difference in coming days for atleast western suburb ppl.. reducing overburden from local trains.

Well not really as I said these projects have a very low chance of becoming a white elephant. They generate revenue and delhi metro was able to recover the entire construction cost of phase 1 in 6 yrs of operation. They invested 2.5 billion and they made it back after 6ys. The growth formula is very simple its the cities that drives the growth not the villages but cities can't run or grow without good transportation because people and goods services needs movement to generate $$$$$$$$$$.

Hence, Metro a best way to keep a city moving and growing.

are you nuts ? U don't have any idea about this project.
Metro route will connect eastern part with western part of city. Metro will reduce travelling time to 30 minutes from 1 hour 45 minutes.

Along with that construction of metros, airports helps monetize land values around them giving a boost to real estate and related development.

No that is not really correct. This Metro or Sky-Bus will run on East-West Corridoors while the Local Trains run on North-South Corridors. The Sky-Bus will relieve pressure on road traffic as well as BEST services.
