Mughal, Nizam era treasure recovered in Hyderabad-India
HYDERABAD: In a significant find, coins and jewellery from Mughal, Tipu Sultan and Nizam era were recovered during demolition of an old house in Doodhbowli. Though the treasure trove was found by two labour contractors and their workers in October, Task Force police have recovered the antiques now after a tip-off.
Task Force police on Tuesday arrested five persons who stole the treasure containing coins, gold and silver ornaments made during the reign of Mughul emperor Akbar, Tipu Sultan and the Nizams. Police recovered the antiques worth over Rs seven crore from the offenders. However, two of the suspects are still on the run.
Police arrested Mohammed Rafeeq, 55, a labour contractor from Bahadurpura, Mohammed Abdul Bari, 58, a labour contractor from Misrigunj, daily-wagers S Ramulu, 47, from Moosabowli, Mohammed Muneer, 55, of Kishan Bagh and Mallesh, 23, from Jiyaguda.
In October, one Satish Kumar had given Rafeeq and Bari contract to demolish his old house in Doodhbowli.
The duo hired Ramulu, Muneer, Mallesh, S Ramulu and Yadaiah to execute the contract. While they were carrying out the demolition work, the gang discovered a treasure hidden inside a wall on the west side room of the property. Instead of informing the owner of the house, the contractors along with the hired workers quietly shared the treasure amongst themselves.
Hyderabad police commissioner Anurag Sharma said Task Force sleuths got a tip-off about the incident recently and the valuables were recovered during simultaneous searches at the houses of the five persons.
"Two absconding culprits might have sold a small quantity of gold in Mumbai and we are trying to trace them," the commissioner added.
In all, Task Force sleuths have recovered gold coins and jewellery weighing about 1,693 grams (1.7 kg), 4,219 grams ( 4.2 kg) of silver ornaments and 490 grams of imitation jewellery from them.
"The gold and silver ornaments seized were crafted by artisans during the Mughul and Nizam era. Some antiques date back to the Roman empire. According to archaeology officials, the coins and jewellery are of historical importance hence the estimated value of these antiques may be between Rs 5 crore and Rs 7 cores," the commissioner said.
During inquiry, police found that the house was inherited by Satish Kumar from his late grandfather, Vishawanath, who had purchased it 50 years ago from Prem Raj and Anand Raj brothers.
The arrested persons and the antiques were handed over to the Kamatipura police for further investigation. A case was booked against them under sections 380 (Theft in a house) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 20 of the Indian Treasure Trove Act, 1878.
