Just because Mohsin Abbas Haider is killing it on the big screen doesn't mean he's said bye bye to television for good.

The actor is all set to make his comeback with Big Bang Entertainment's latest production, Meraas.

"I've never had centre-parted hair onscreen so we're trying that out," revealed the actor


Talking to Images about his character, Mohsin shared, "I play Haris, a spoilt, reckless guy who's always one-wheeling around on his bike. He really wants to get married but to someone from abroad so he wants to go to London and marry a foreign woman. However, things don't quite pan out that way and his mother marries him off to someone from his home town. But he also ends up marrying this other woman in order to go live overseas."



The show, which will go on air on ARY Digital, also stars Sawera Nadeem, Saboor Aly, Fahad Sheikh and Asma Abbas to name a few.

"It's a great story to begin with but I really believe the execution has been brilliant. It's shot very differently from the usual dramas we see; it's the director, Ali Hassan's experiment so let's see how people take it. We're nervous but after watching the teasers a bit, we're getting the feeling people will enjoy it."

Hareem Farooq steals the show in Parchi's trailer

She's a gangster with an attitude to match

Parchi's trailer is mostly about Hareem Farooq. #Deal.

The trailer for the upcoming film recently released and though there isn't much to go by, we do know we've got a gangster in the mix, four friends caught in serious trouble, plenty of action and oodles of money.



The three-minute trailer heavily features Hareem Farooq's character as well as Ali Rehman Khan's; there's a subtle suggestion that their gangster friend is helping the boy out because she has feelings for one of them, Ali, however, goes through some serious ups and downs in relationships with his friends as the plot thickens.

The action consists of lots of whacking, right on the face and a good many gun shots.

The film stars Hareem Farooq, Ali Rehman Khan and Usman Mukhtar in lead roles, along with Ahmed Ali Akbar, Shafqat Khan, Shafqat Cheema, Salmaan Shaukat and Talal Jilani.

Parchi has been directed by Janaan director Azfar Jafri and is expected to release Jan 5, 2018..

2018 looks equally promising though, with Parchi set to open in the month of January. The trailer of the film, launched at a star-studded event, features all protagonists such as Hareem Farooq, Ali Rehman Khan, Usman Mukhtar, Ahmed Ali Akbar, Shafqat Khan as well as Shafqat Cheema, seen in a supporting role and paints a thrilling, offbeat picture.

We usually see stereotypical representation of women in our movies. However, in Parchi (as seen in the trailer), Farooq is essaying the role of a ‘gangster’ which is unconventional, particularly for female actors. And that is a step in the right direction. The trailer opens with all the five characters riding in a car where Farooq, who plays the part of Eman, is instructing the rest of the gang, as they head to rob Zodiac, essayed by Cheema. Going by the trailer, Parchi looks very much like an action-comedy film.

Directed by Azfar Jafri, the story revolves around the ‘parchi system’, which is a norm in our country, where local gangsters ask for bhatta from people engaged in some kind of business. The interesting bit is that the movie has highlighted this sensitive topic in a light manner, so that people can understand and enjoy the movie without it feeling like a preachy sermon.

The movie has been produced by Imran Raza Kazmi, while Shafqat Khan, who has already made his mark as a theatre play writer, has written the script.

According to Hareem Farooq, actor and co-producer of the film, she is really excited about this upcoming venture. “After receiving such an over-whelming response to the trailer, I can’t wait for the audience to see the movie. I have done a very different character in this movie and I am loving the feedback so far,” she said in a press statement.

Releasing on January 5, 2018, Parchi looks edgier than your average Pakistani production and given the unconventional role Farooq is playing, it will make for essential viewing.

'Parchi' selected for screening in cinemas across Saudi Arabia

Following Saudi Arabia’s move to open cinema houses all over the kingdom again starting from May next year, Lollywood’s home production ‘Parchi’ is selected as the first movie to be showcased in Saudi cinemas.

According to international media, this is a huge leap of progress in about 35 years.

In this regard, the audio-visual media control department has started selection of various movies to be projected soon.

Saudi culture and information minister, Awwad bin Saleh has confirmed the functioning of cinemas and the approval of films to be screened.

Parchi is expected to attract audiences’ attention towards cinema. It stars Hareem Farooq, Ali Rehman and Shafqat Cheema along with various others.

Hareem Farooq, who is playing the leading lady shared of the movie, says selection amongst the first few films to be screened in Saudi cinemas is an honour as well as testament to the fact that Pakistani cinema is capturing the international market.

Parchi' is all set to be released on January 5 in Pakistan and on January 12 in Saudi Arabia.

'Chupan Chupai' review: The birth of new film stars

KARACHI : It’s a beautiful thing to witness the birth of a new star. And what’s better than to watch several new stars make an impactful debut in one film and put the entire industry on notice. Mohsin Ali’s Chupan Chupai, the last Pakistani film of 2017, does just that.

Chupan Chupai, which borrows its story from a Tamil film, revolves around four unemployed men, Babu (Ahsan Khan), Teeli (Vajdaan Shah), Faddy (Zayed Sheikh), and Koki (Ali Rizvi), who resort to kidnapping to make ends meet. They end up kidnapping the minister’s son (Faizan Khawaja) and the consequences lead them to battle against the notorious police officer Chaudhary (Adnan Jaffar).

After a disappointing year for the local film industry, not many had expectations from Chupan Chupai to deliver a quality experience.

After all, if veterans such as Shaan, Shoaib Mansoor and Syed Noor, with their years of experience, failed, how can a bunch of newbies succeed? But oh, how the mighty fall, and can be easily replaced.

Chupan Chupai , in that aspect, is an important film for the local industry. It proves one point: It’s time to invest in younger (albeit yet unproven) talent. Most of the team behind the film come from a theatre background and if you have watched them perform live, you already know their potential. For the rest, give the young guns a chance and you would get more than your money’s worth.

Granted, except the Udaari star, one would be unfamiliar with most of the names. Yet, they are the ones who prove their acting prowess the most. Shah, Rizvi, Sheikh (who also serves as the co-producer) show that carry the film and are so comfortable in front of the camera you’d doubt it’s their debut. Shah owns his character of a street-smart, angry young man. Rizvi, as the idiot of the gang, is the true star of the film. With his impeccable comic timing and over-the-top expressions, he delivers the most memorable, laugh-out-loud funny moments.

Watch out because there’s no denying that he will be a major player in the industry in the coming days. A special mention goes to National Academy of Performing Arts (Napa) for training and nurturing powerhouse talent which is just beginning to show the world what they’re capable of.

‘Chupan Chupai’ aims to encourage young talent in Pakistan

Khawaja is brilliant as the minister’s son. His low-key cunning nature and the boiling frustration resulting in interesting decisions make room for much chaos in the film. Neelam Munir, as Babu’s girlfriend Pari, serves her limited function of sprinkling masala in the film.

That’s her only purpose. Khan is effective as Babu. While some of his character’s actions go unexplained, he fulfills his role of carrying the story forward. Although it isn’t his debut (and he’s already a star), Chupan Chupai should be to Khan what Na Maloom Afraad (NMA) was to Fahad Mustafa, and must raise his stock way high.

Speaking of Na Maloom Afraad, one may draw a few parallels between the two films. The original NMA was a novel idea at the time and it became a sleeper hit. Chupan Chupai walks a similar path in terms of content. Yes, it has flaws in screenplay and direction, but it grips you in the first 15 minutes and never leaves you until the end. It could have been shorter in duration, but you won’t feel that until you leave the theatre. And yet, the dominant thought after watching the film would be: “When is the sequel coming out?”

The beauty of Chupan Chupai is that, even with its loopholes, it has more than enough to keep you engaged (mostly hysterically laughing) and busy with several twists and turns. And yet, it leaves enough doors open for a potential sequel. The film, with everything it offers, may very well become a cult classic some time from now.

‘Support local cinema’ has become a most repulsive cliché for me lately because its common usage infers mindless, flag-waving loyalty over quality. But in this case, it may be apt because by supporting these emerging stars (who actually know their craft, unlike many), we ensure that the future of the industry is safe. After the massive disappointments like Arth and Rangreza, Chupan Chupai gives you a solid reason to return to theatres and support good, entertaining cinema.

Verdict: If you enjoyed watching Na Maloom Afraad, Golmaal andFukrey, Chupan Chupai is a must-watch that will make you laugh your head off.

Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars.

Karachi - The cast and crew of Parchi walked the red carpet at the premiere of their eagerly-awaited movie at a local multiplex in Karachi the other day. The movie has been the talk of the town since its trailer came out in December, followed by the hit song ‘Billo Hai’ which has the whole country grooving to it.
