Dude thats a very idealistic /leftist statement. As long as you don't live in some utopian socialist country, you will be bombarded with commercials for all things under the sun. So the first thing you have to do is set your priorities right. I will very much like to own the new AUDI or BMW shown in TV or billboards and I can afford it if I sell everything I own, but I am not that stupid and neither is 99.99% people of this world. JAJPUR (ODISHA): Investigation into the sale of a baby boy by his mother in Odisha's Jajpur district has revealed curious details — the money was used to buy a mobile phone and a pair of jeans among other things. "Rakhi Patra of Mundamala village who sold her 17 month-old son for Rs 5,000 purchased a new mobile phone, a pair of jeans, few new tops (to go with the jeans) and memory cards for her mobile with the money," Jajpur superintendent of police Deepak Kumar said on Wednesday.

The investigations were conducted when a division bench of Orissa high court took suo moto cognizance of media reports on the sale and directed the police to recover the baby and hand him over to his mother. Rejecting the mother's claim that she sold the child to meet the legal expenses of her jailed husband, Kumar said her new acquisitions were evidence of the fact that she did not sell her baby boy due to poverty.

She has confessed before us that she had purchased all these items from the money out of the sale of her baby for Rs 5,000 he said adding the goods were seized from her.

The woman refused to take back her son after police handed her the boy after recovering him from Cuttack on Tuesday. We had handed over the baby but to our utter dismay, the mother refused to take him to her custody in the presence of the general public. Later, we handed him over to child welfare committee.

Rakhi, who is 20 years old and a daily wage earner had in association with a rickshawpuller sold her son to Babula Behera on September 17 in Cuttack.

Police rescued the baby boy from Nuapatana village yesterday following the order of high court division bench comprising Chief Justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice BK Mishra on Friday.

Western values do not say sell your children for money, its an individual's choice.

Why blame everything over west.Materialism is present in all Human civilization.It is some that defines us.

Whats wrong with it? I consider it a humane practice that should be practiced by all countries.

"Baby cribs"(where parents can anonymously drop unwanted babies off) are preferable to throwing these helpless babies in dumpsters to die a painful, slow death(and that's what the crib doors were legislated to prevent).

But to have the society be in such a depraved level, that they have to do this to prevent people from throwing helpless babies into dumpsters, is a very bad thing.

And the more banal/carnal the society gets, the more common this stuff gets. This is a side-effect of Hollywood/Bollywood. So much "eye-candy" gets flash in front of kids from a very young age, that this is all they can think about. This stuff appeals to the lower carnal/animalistic part of your brain, rather than intellectual higher-thinking. Rape statistics go up, divorce rates go up because the hubby or the wife's found someone new who looks better, and then you have children in broken homes with higher teen suicide rates.

The west likes to present a very clean, sophisticated self-superior picture of itself, but there's a whole other side.(the "Western dream" propaganda that attracts cheap labor from all over the world, only to drive taxis and clean toilets at 2AM). Ever since their family system collapsed after the 1960's, it's had really huge implications for them. Day-care substitutes parental care, and children in turn eventually dump their parents into old-homes. Majority of marriages break appart, and teenage suicide statistics go up in children who grow up in broken homes. When the society degenerates into this, psychopath murders tend to rise, shootings going on in schools and colleges every few years where some messed up kid goes around and shoots a hundred people.

So yes - a society that needs "baby cribs" to curb the number of babies who are found dead in dumpsters, is in trouble.
