Places India smells bad not due to trash or pollution but fortheir body odor. I had a south indian housemate during college, nice person but man his room stinked so bad if the door was open you cant go near. Same with a female. Do not know why, maybe they use perfume of stink

I think what you are describing is odor from curry powder. I guess that is a preference. Some people really like curry. I know many landlords actually reject Indians for thinking they will be cooking curries and getting smell onto furniture or walls. Asian cuisines often require a lot of more intensive cooking than caucasian food with simple sandwishes or methods that don't produce the same strong smells as Asian cuisines.

As for pollution, it is not due to curry or cooking but high numbers of particulate within certain size ranges are contributed by trash burning more than industry. That's how these pollution data are collected and measured anyway. China's heavy industry cities also do very poorly but over time have improved a lot due to adopting new technologies and getting rid of older power stations or factories and replacing with newer ones. Obviously not overnight but a good progress. Twenty years ago Chinese cities would have been topping the top 30 in most polluted along with Indian ones. Even ten years ago would have plenty.

Hotan is a desert city, people here worship water cause this place used to have so little water here, in recent year, the government invested hundreds, of millions of dollars in various water projects to safeguard abundant water supply to the city, now this oasis town has more than enough water and they even has a fancy water park so the desert locals don't have to travel thousands of miles to the seaside to have water fun, they can just have the same water fun coastal folks enjoy in the comfort of their own city.

Hotan is in the desert, the biggest problem is the city gets hit by sandstorms every a few days, in recent years the government planted tens of million trees to protect this ancient town, it's getting better but still people can feel sand in their eyes, mounths and noses.

People were praying in standstorm near Hotan some years back in the past, it was way of life for them to deal with sandstorms for thousands of years.

In June 2022, a new railway line was put in operation, It's a desert loopline circling The Taklamakan Desert, total length 2,712 km (1,685 mi) , it's a good addition to Hotan's existing railway, will greatly boost Hotan's economy and tourism in the future.
