More than a helping hand: Iran offers to provide 10,000MW

Mate the Iranians do drive a hard bargain. I noticed that one of the reasons that Pakistan and India were both falling over each other over TAPI was because the price offered was cheap.

I think that Iran should also have given a deal to India and Pakistan that even India would have ignored American pressure and joined IPI

I do wonder how much is politics and how much price sensitive?

And I found the NYMEX electricity rates which are currently at 8.5 cents roughly. So it is not a bad offer.

Agreed, but the situation is really not good in Pakistan. There is a big shortage of electricity and the price of electricity is now over Rs. 18 per unit and if you consume more than 1000 units per month then you have even to pay twice that. How much does it cost in UK?

We need to move forward with Iran and if west are going to use propaganda and put Pakistan and Iran together we might as well give them a fitting response

I envisage if the structure is put into place - 18 months and Iran could be providing us with much needed electricity. This MUST be made a priority and worked upon asap! Iran and Pakistan must work closely together - would be great to see.

its time we idiots should understand that importing electricty will be sucidal..we already are in fiscal deficit

the solution is converting to coal and using it up in our current power plants while importing coal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for long term we should build two-three dams that will besuffcient for next twenty years e.h
buji---7,000
kalabagh-----4500
basha....4,500
dasu...4,300

all these dams can be started simultaneously..it will only cost 30% of our developmental project to implement them..infact most can be implented with funds from world bank...the problem is the poliitcal will..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

again we should never import electricity..

.
How will you pay for it ? Currency and sources.

lol, indians are more concerned about currency and sources? they forgot that we are a country and we do have our own currency and sources, nothing they need to be concerned off ...

.
he has a point..if we start importing EVERYTHING then it would be difficult to pay..
thats why we should NOT import electricity as problem is not in generation capacity its fuel problem..
or current demand is 17,000 and generation capacity 23,000

ok 6 months gone and no updates on this proposal

I don't think Pakistan will buy 10,000MW of electricity from Iran as we simply can't afford to import 50% of our electricity consumption from a foreign country. Pakistan needs to invest on Hydro power projects and keep the "kalabagh dam nahi banne dain ge" type "thekedaars" in the cage until the projects are completed.

Pakistan needs to rely on natural resources if she wants to keep the inflation down and boost the growth rate to reasonable point. Maximum I would say 1100MW of importing electricity's existing project should continue and the gas pipeline is enough for generating another 4500MW of electricity. That's all for now

Not true. Alot of countries import electricity. Our factories are closing down because of it. It is better to import at least for the medium term till other projects are made. There is no other way. The thing is even if we import, it is going to be mostly for the summer months and only just about less than half of our electricity. That is not much and if we can afford importing diesel and generator sets and running our homes and industries by them, then we can import electricity directly and actually save money.

And any hydro project is going to take more than ten years. That is if we start tomorrow we will not see any result till 2022. And the coal conversion of most thermal stations in Pakistan is not possible since they are not steam plants and mostly are turbine based. And the whole coal scenario is overblown. We still have not a single large coal power plant. So it is upto you, to suffer in the heat along with all other people from babies in hospitals to old women in their houses.

And do not expect any investors coming in either after all these fiasco:

Importation is the only fast way to tackle this problem. There is no other way.
