What's new

More than 300 million Indians suffer from a crippling drought

interesting, as climate change is beneficial to China as agri output have increased. All joke aside, better technology and farming method contributed to more agriculture output.

Hmmm, Ironically carbon emissions which is a major benefctor in climate change can also benefit agriculture by increasing photosynthesis in crops such as Rice, Wheat and Soy.. But nobody is quite sure if carbon fertilization is beneficial or harmful for human consumption

So that may be likely the cause than better technology and farming technology

you are correct too. It's a combination of both. Global warming will allow certain areas in China to have a longer harvest season in colder areas, so yes, it's a combined effect.

.
This is shameful. Water scarcity is increasing day by day and agricultural output is falling.

I am not sure what the govt can do. They are already providing massive loan waivers, subsidized fuel and electricity.

The problem is our population - There needs to be a strict two child policy. People shouldn't raise entire cricket teams if they can barely feed themselves. This is a crime against future generations.

Of Course .Particularly in BIMARU cricket team family policy is dragging the developments in there .UP and Bihar have combined population of around 30 crore.7 backward states housing around half of Indian population .
Please dont say about climate because Israelis and other west asians proved that agriculture is even possible in deserts .It is up to the people .
Problem lies with corrupt democratic governments, it would take an authoritarian government like China but since you guys
have a false pride about being the worlds largest democracy, enjoy the fruits.

Similar problem to a smaller extent exists in pakistan as well and I just hope that it is seriously addressed before we become another india.

Who told you about Chinese administration ?
Have you ever been in any Chinese administrative loops ?Forget .Have you ever been in China ?

We have only one father for our Nation .That is MK Gandhi .We have only one Constitution of India written under the command Dr Ambedkar .So neither we give damn about others govt structure nor give a shit about opportunist policy.

Interesting map.

Funny how this works - those parts of the world that has contributed the most to global warming historically are least affected by it's consequences while those parts of the planet that have contributed the least or in very negligible way are the most vulnerable!

A Reminder that Life's not Fair.

Time to invade Europe :P

Since we're on the subject there is a symposium on Water management going on right now in Sri Lanka

Protecting water resources seen top priority for Sri Lanka

ECONOMYNEXT – Safeguarding Sri Lanka’s water resources is a top priority for the government, Udaya Senevirathne, Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, said.

The island has over 30,000 small lakes, 130 big lakes, and 103 rivers and water sources, he told a news conference.

“Safeguarding and managing our water resources remain a priority for the President, who oversee this portfolio,” Senevirathne told a news conference held to announce an international water conference hosted by the island.

The 8th GEF Biennial International Waters Conference (IWC) will be held in Sri Lanka from the 9th to 13th May 2016 with the participation of 250 foreign delegates from over 80 countries, including government ministers from Seychelles, Maldives and Angola.

“The conference will provide an opportunity to learn about good water management practices, coastal zone management, protected areas and alternative livelihoods in Sri Lanka,” Senevirathne said.

Joern Soerensen, Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme, said the conference will discuss threats to clean water resources and how to overcome them.

IWC is organized under the theme ‘’Scaling Up Investments from Source to Sea’ in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Especially it will look at two SDGs — to ensure access to water and sanitation for all and conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources,” Soerensen said.

The forum will also look at scaling up investments and strengthening governance processes in managing water resources.

IWC8 is jointly organized by the GEF (Global Environment Facility Secretariat, Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Participants also include representatives of GEF beneficiary countries, non-governmental organizations, transboundary waters management institutions, United Nations agencies, GEF International Waters project managers and staff, and the international private sector.

The GEF is the largest financier of cooperation in shared waters systems, said Christian Severin, Senior Environmental Specialist of GEF.

It has a specific focus on two SDGs covering sustainable management of shared aquifers, lakes, rivers, large marine ecosystems and open oceans.

You might want to look at the link between POPULATION DENSITY and Water shortage.

It has more to do with the ability to react, plan ahead, and the population size. The whole world will be affected the same.

LOL... it has more to do with hot regions getting hotter and Colder regions getting Warmer.

Nothing to do with planning and reacting.

It's easier to move a few thousand people than it is to move a few million villagers. :coffee:

We are already being affected by climate change in America.

Climate change is Global ....... it affects everybody, including American :cheesy:

In any case the movement of people has nothing to do with logistics. It has everything to do with exploitation, domination, politics, Bigotry and Racism.

Global warming is going to happen over decades and that is plenty of time to move millions if the world really cared.

And why should we care about you when you call us racists? Go beg for help from Russia.

I already said climate change is global.

This is not about water, this is about livelihoods and money.

The farming of sugar cane is depleting the water sources and sugar cane is not a staple - it is sold for cash abbeit a very poor cash crop.

Poor soil and water should only be used for hardy crops like potatoes and such. Its not glorious or rich but will see people through thick and thin.

Its unfortunate but if it is not feasible to live off the land, a different type of employment is needed for the people there. Gambling year after year on the arrival and quantity of rain is not a way to live.

Its well established that you don't. I don't think the rest of the world has any illusions about that, despite what your media tells you.

You have been begging pakistan for help with your 'war on terror', I don't think India has similar policy :P But its funny to see that you think you can tell us what to do. You can't, so don't even bother.

India will do what it has to, to ensure our existence. I suggest you mind your own business.

People do not do it because they want to, they do it because they don't have a choice.
