Moral panic? No. We are resisting the pornification of women

Note that I'm only talking about the West (specifically America) here, as I don't know what the status of society and feminism is elsewhere.

What is loose morals? Can you elaborate.

Well let's start with the practice of sleeping around before marriage. In the past, this was acceptable for men, but not for women. Thanks to feminists, women now also have that "right". Net result: massive explosion in kids with single or divorced parents and general collapse of relationships.

As far as I know feminist want equal right for men and women. That has achieved partially in western world only.

Since at least the transition to agricultural societies, women, because of the physical constraints of pregnancy and child-rearing, have been unable to participate in the labor-intensive tasks necessary for life. This has resulted in an imbalance of power between men and women. Now, with industrialization, its possible that life will become less labor intensive, allowing men and women to finally have equal rights.

This is certainly the goal of feminism. However, feminists disagree about how to achieve this. I feel many Western feminists are only making matters worse for everyone.

About objectifying women, I am really not with feminists on this. Men are objectified too.

Not to nearly the same extent as men. Just look at any advertising. Or take a look at an item number. You'll see that women tend to be the objects of sexualization far more than men.

The bit about explosion in kids - one can counter that by saying that protection is available, and men should most certainly opt for it.

The onus should not be on women.

However, coming back to the original point about objectification and pornification of women - how does one limit that?

I agree with Belligerent, rather than women becoming truly liberated, they've only become even more conforming.

It's like the need to validated by men - but the flip side is, are men willing to accept women who are non-conforming?

@safriz: you claim that feminists want men to be castrated, where exactly did you come across this? I think it would make for wonderful reading for all forummers here if you could back that up with nice solid links.

Thank God there are women out there who haven't conformed to that Barbie doll, dumb Blonde stereotype that society (we men) have been feeding them ! That zero size beauty isn't going to be worth a wooden nickle after you've lived with a hollow head for a while...when companionship is all but superficial and personality only skin deep !

Elmo - I love you, Sis ! Thanks for sharing this and voicing your own opinion. Unfortunately the women, generally, I've come across are more interested in what Khusa to buy from Liberty Market than some of our ever present issues and the few that actually have an opinion aren't that well versed. But I suppose many of us men, are unintelligent, uncouth douche bags too !

It's asking that society should stop objectifying women: is a woman's role only to dress up?

Does a woman who doesn't dress up or look pretty, does she truly fail to be feminine?

I think a large part of it is also how we define femininity (and not feminism

I mean society don't force them to take part in pornification or objectification. What if they take part in this process of pornification by their own choice for easy money? What if some women don't require emotional reciprocity from their mate and only wish to objectifying her body. What if hey ask nothing more than sex. Why we should blame society if that's what they like?

Feminists used to be a movement for gender equality issues like the right to vote, equal pay etc. It was fight for social equality. Not sexual equality. The fight for sexual equality is a divisive one.The feminist movement has taken two separate streams. They differ in the way they define female empowerment. There are those who believe that women are heavily objectified and there are those who believe that sexual promiscuity is empowering.

Can we truly say that women are objectified when they are used to sell products (such as clothing) to women? Aren't men used to sell products (such as clothing) simply for men? When products do not cater to a sex, women are typically used to sell products. But can we really say that women are objectified when the very people who agree to sell a product are women? Can we really say that pornography objectifies women when the very people putting themselves on display are women?

Men have always felt intimidated by female sexuality - women who are confident in their sexuality - are always vilified as ******.

There are girls who can put you in deep fry mode with just their eyes and those are the ones u want to marry not those girls who wear skimpy clothes just to make u an animal.

U want the man to be virile and controlled, dont keep testing his control, help him to control himself rather than the opposite.

I dont think it misses the point - it addresses it by saying that the feminists are not advocating moral policing - eg. what Maya Khan did on her show.

it is all in the eyes, they say everything.after that it is upto the man not to blow his feet off.

That was a metaphor...Although "radical feminism" wants things like this to happen to men and even a total end of male species.

Feminism does not ask for moral policing on women.but its all about moral policing on men..isnt it?

there is nothing wrong in women being more vocal & confident about there sexuality & feminiti.

all women are pretty but the thing is are we as a society mature enof to acknowledge it without owr sexually frustated bais against it....Baat nazar kee nahee nazaruye kee hai

Men are equally responsible for massive explosion of single parenthood. Why would the burden of being moral should be on woman only.
Also single parenthood can be due to any reason including sleeping around.

We should make disctinction between equal rights and whether somebody is capable of doing it. In many cases, the capability was there, but they were simply not allowed. (like too stupid to vote?). Feminist movement like civil right movement and gay right movement has made us aware of our own assumptions which was wrong in many cases.

In any case they are a special interest group and they dont have to be right all the time.

On the other hand feminist opposition to objectification of women seems to be one sided argument to me, especially when they talk about pornography. In advertising I agree women images are more used.

Conclusion: A girl slaps a guy, the guy deserves to hit her back.
I am fine with it. No more of ''Ladies first", ''Don't talk to ladies like that'', etc etc. P.S if women in Pakistan deserve a place in Army, then they must also go through same training to which men are put through, that would also include boxing, 9 mile running, 1 mile in 5 mins, Cold baths at roof tops during chilly winters, and all the other rigorous training program's.
