Hoardings for Narendra Modi’s rally in Delhi at the weekend depicted the newly-anointed prime ministerial candidate as India’s lion, by Monday morning, an insert in some of the country’s major newspapers had reduced him to a ***** cat.

The two-page cartoon strip of a character intended to represent Mr. Modi shows him in conversation with a Delhi resident remarking on how the capital city compares with Gujarat, where he is chief minister, in terms of infrastructure, income levels, life expectancy and infant mortality rate. Delhi comes out better in the statistical comparison, however the data quoted are unattributed. The cartoon Mr. Modi is stunned by the level of development in Delhi. “Friends, such nice government hospitals and such competent doctors. I can’t believe it,” the cartoon Mr. Modi is shown as saying in Hindi.

At the end of the strip, Mr. Modi, whom the captions refer to as Feku, which means “bragger” in Hindi, runs away, according to the text.

It is unclear who sponsored the insert, which may be in breach of electoral guidelines. According to a notice issued by the chief electoral officer in Delhi, election pamphlets and posters should not be printed without the names and addresses of the publisher.

Tens of thousands of people gathered to listen to Mr. Modi Sunday at his first rally in New Delhi since the Bharatiya Janata Party, India’s main opposition, crowned him as their prime minister in waiting ahead of national elections.

Mr. Modi used the speech to attack the record of Delhi’s chief minister, Sheila Dikshit, and said that she did little more than cut ribbons at inaugural events for a living.

Nobody from Ms. Dikshit’s office was immediately reachable for a comment.

Recently, Mr. Modi and P. Chidambaram, India’s finance minister, were at loggerheads debating India’s rate of growth and development.

Mr. Modi claimed that India grew 8.4% under BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s regime between 1998 to 2004, and blamed Congress for not being able to carry it forward.

India’s gross domestic product grew just 5.0% in the year ended March 31, the slowest expansion in a decade, and has since lost even more steam, expanding just 4.4% in the three months ended June.

Mr. Chidambaram, however, said Mr. Modi was distorting facts.

He said this was the average growth rate during Congress-led United Progressive Alliance’s first five year tenure between from 2004 to 2009.

Mr. Modi has embarked on a country-wide tour to woo voters ahead of the Parliamentary polls in 2014 to sell his agenda of good governance and economic development.

then its time for a change in the mindset, this is not politics of yesterday, this is progressive new politics that needs to be applauded. don't get bogged down in history and think outside the sqaure.

Not really... Many of them are there just because they are fed up of this pathetic excuse for a government. I have voted my whole life for Congress ( except one time whn I was 12 ). But this time, will support anyone who defeats this govt. Since Modi seems to be the capable one, my vote goes to him...

BTW 20,000 Muslims attended Delhi rally . They also support " Hindu Extremism and Hindu Terrorism over peace and prosperity in India and the Bar-e-Saghir region as a whole "... Quite surprising, isnt it..?
