India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi upbraided the Congress Party for letting Kartarpur gurdwara “go to Pakistan” in 1947, Hindustan Times reported on Tuesday.

Addressing a rally in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, Modi called the Sikh temple of Baba Guru Nanak Dev going to Pakistan a result of the Congress Party’s neglect for the Sikh community.

Pakistan to go ahead with construction in Kartarpur corridor

He said that in a rush to take charge of the country the Congress did not keep in mind sentiments of the Sikh Community and made the mistake of letting Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara go to Pakistan.

“My destiny has been to fix Congress’ wrongs. The holy work of Kartarpur corridor has also come to me. We should ask the Congress, why they had let Kartarpur go to Pakistan at the time of partition.”

“Had the Congress paid a little bit of attention, Kartarpur Gurdwara, which is just three kilometres away, would have been in India. We should also ask the Congress why they had not got the corridor built in the last 70 years,” Modi said.

Modi also proclaimed that Kartarpur corridor is an achievement of the Bharatiya Janta Party. He said that work was being done now because people had voted the BJP government into power.

Vile as he is, he has a point. In order to get Kartarpur, India would likely have had to make concessions elsewhere (likely Gurdaspur where Muslim majority districts had been given to India and thus improved its access to Kashmir). Congress found Sikhs expendable and not for the first time. Having said that the BJP hardly cares about Sikhs and in reality Modi probably regards Sikhs as a sect of Hinduism (https://www.straight.com/news/915861/gurpreet-singh-when-punjab-became-indias-laboratory-hindutva).

Tomorrow he will be blamed for having paved the way for a free Khalistan and Kashmir, through his hindutwa dominated ideologies...

I think its more about the brits making sure there are reasons for the two to keep fighting. So they would make divisions that would affect the other.
Technically the whole Punjab should have come to Pakistan for being a Muslim Majority province, and the same for Bengal. But that' where the brits decided to screw things up and pave india's way to Kashmir, while also cutting off a major chunk of Bengal to make it easy for them to take it over.

Modi rakes up the issue why Kartarpur is in Pakistan, not India. At Tashkent and Simla, India could have traded the return of captured territories for Kartarpur—and more. India is the only country to surrender, without any quid pro quo, territorial gains from not one but two wars.

What territorial gains?

May be in your school you weren't told this but you actually gave back captured lands not because of some special love for Pakistan but because you got that territory in return which you lost during the war.

So it was a more or less equal exchange of land. Just get off the high horse of morality that you are riding.

Since its just 3 km from the border, why not exchange this stretch for some other area?
I can't imagine Pakistan being happy with thousands of Indians streaming in and the attendant security headache.
This would really be a good gesture on pakistan's side for the Sikhs.
