Modern India: A personal experience of a Sri Lankan

You're right. Maybe I will open a can of worms if I say this - but I sense a bit of hostility amongst the local Tamils towards northerners. With all the anti-Hindi agitation background cant help but feel that some of it has remained entrenched.

That is plain fleecing. Can happen everywhere. Sikh auto drivers have tried to fleece me in Delhi and I am a Sikh myself.

Chennai has a huge Marwari community who have been running successful businesses for generations. You cannot expect a Chennai guy to speak or understand Hindi. That would be the only issue . It is the Tamils who get attacked where ever they go. Tamil Nadu has never been hostile to outsidres.

I think people in rural India are more helpful then Urban India...Many a times they dont Understand ur Language but they try convey there message by sign language....

If same situation happens in a Metropolitan city like Mumbai , Delhi or Chennai people will avoid such people who dont understand english , Hindi or there local language...

Rural India believes In Atithi Devo Bhava & in Urban India its like Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge...

The people who are really money hungry in Chennai are the auto rickshaw drivers. Otherwise it's a fine city with cultured people. You can get to experience the best of Carnatic arts (music and dance), food (Sarvana Bhavan, et al) and also shop for exquisite clothes for women. Although, the city is very conservative for Mumbaikars (Mumbai folks), it's slowly becoming less so. Thanks for sharing this article.

OT: I guess they suck everywhere in India, In Pune it's a big problem !

@ Lankan ranger, I would avoid to judge whole community based on personal experience with a single human being ! it may be good or bad. I would rather have no presumptions which I think is healthy !

I think we Mallus ( keralites) adjust with any kind of people where ever we go...we never faced Any local problem from other local Indian population or outside India...

Where ever we go we first settle there... then bring our brothers, cousins, friends & finally make small MALLU LAND:smitten: at that place...

Beware world Mallus are here to Conquer this world...

I just remembered my first local ride experiance!!...but did not effect me since i am a MALAYALI.

Auto rickshaw drivers in Mumabi are pucca gentlemen when compared to the ones in Chennai or in any city in Tamil Nadu and I'm a Tamil myself.

In mumbai only meter, no peter.

some indian written this. :P self satisfaction.

Some one is appreciating the ethics of a single sales person, He took time in typing his experiences in Chennai, This does not mean India is full of nice people nor India will become a super Power because of this.... If he had still typed an article if a lady demanded 1000 bugs from him.... As said by some one earlier, Don't judge a nation with one person.
