Another tourist raped in india
Why does the indian media suppress the incidence of rape, sexual assault and molestation in the country. According to recent figures, india is a world leader in incidence of rape, sexual assault, child molestation, gang rape, female infanticide, human smuggling and extra-judicial killing and torture.

The continuing rapes of tourist, often suppresed by the local media and indian government institutes have increased phenomenally in recent years with many travel agencies warning their potential clients to refrain from travelling to india as they cannot guarantee their safety. Rape seems to be a way of life in india, and the sight of foreign ''fair skin'' tourists is proving to difficult of an opportunity for average would be rapist/molesting indians to pass up.

More tests after Goa beach death

Scarlett's mother said she should have been more fearful for her
A second post-mortem examination has been ordered on the body of a British teenager found on a beach in Goa.
Scarlett Keeling, 15, from Bideford, Devon, had been on a six-month holiday to the Indian state with her family.

After her body was found at the resort of Anjuna on 18 February, Indian police said the teenager drowned accidentally.

Her mother, Fiona MacKeown, believes Scarlett may have been raped and murdered and hope the results of the tests could trigger a murder inquiry.

Fiona MacKeown said: "The police need to take action and hopefully that's what will happen.

"But if we hadn't pressed for the second autopsy, I don't think they'd have bothered."

The government should be warning tourists

Fiona MacKeown

The British High Commission has confirmed four of 10 British deaths in Goa this year were from unnatural causes.

"The police have even denied there have been other deaths," Ms MacKeown said.

"If I'd known that I would've been more fearful and kept Scarlett much closer."

Scarlett is reported to have been seen leaving a beach bar in the early hours of the morning in an intoxicated state.

Goa's chief minister, Digambar Kamat, has defended police officers and said foreign women should take greater responsibility for their own personal safety.

"Surely if it's dangerous, the government should be warning tourists instead of giving the impression it's a hippy paradise," Ms MacKeown told BBC News.

She is hoping another Briton who could have vital evidence about her daughter's death may come forward.

Ms MacKeown was told he may have witnessed Scarlett being raped, but has since left the area because he fears for his own safety.

'Never-ending nightmare'

"I hope he'll do the right thing and help us," she said.

"The public do care and some are coming forward, but people are frightened of the police."

No-one from the Goan authorities has been available to comment.

Ms MacKeown told BBC News that what should have been the trip of a lifetime has now turned into a "never-ending nightmare".

"We're just about getting by, but it's not good," she said.

The Foreign Office has confirmed it is providing Scarlett's family with consular support, but it said it could not speculate on the cause of death.

Number of Pak tourists to India on rise

A good number of Pakistanis are visiting India as tourists, despite ups and downs in bilateral relations, according to Tourism Ministry statistics.

In fact, the number of Pakistanis visiting tourist spots in the country is on the rise, according to the data.

While 83,426 Pak nationals came to India in 2006, their number rose to 106,283 in 2007. From Bangladesh, 480,240 tourists came to India in that year.

Interestingly, the number of Bangla and Pak tourists is more than that of those from West Asia or from China (88,103), South Korea (84,583), Indonesia (17,818), Singapore (92,908), Thailand (50,037) in 2007, the data says.

There was a slight decrease in the number of Bangladeshis travelling to India in 2007 as against 484,401 in 2006.

US remains at the top of chart with 799,062 tourists from the country coming to India in 2007 as against 696,739 in 2006.
From UK, India received 796,191 travellers in 2007, an increase of 8.4 per cent from the previous year.

The total number of foreign tourists during 2007 was 5.08 million as against 4.45 million in 2006, an increase of 14.3 per cent, the data says.

However, more Indians are going abroad as tourists than foreign tourists coming to India.

In 2007, a total of 9.78 million Indians visited foreign locations which was an increase of 17.3 per cent than the previous year.

The increase is steady since 1991 when India liberalised it economy. After registering a negative growth in outbound sector, the tourist outflow increased by 11.3 per cent in 1992.

India concerned about tourist rapes:
The rise in the number of rape and molestation cases against women tourists in India, has forced the government to review the safety and security of visitors.

Tourism Secretary Shilabhadra Banerjee has written to the chief secretaries of all states to ensure proper measures are in place to make tourist destinations secure.

In the past year there has been a spate of cases of rape.

Over New Year's Eve, cases of molestation of tourists were reported both in Mumbai and Kochi.

A British journalist has alleged she was raped by the owner of the guesthouse in Udaipur where she was staying last week.

In another incident in Rajasthan, a 28-year-old American tourist was allegedly molested by a priest in front of a temple in the Hindu pilgrim town of Pushkar. The priest was subsequently arrested.

In March last year, the son of an important police official, was found guilty of raping a German researcher in Rajasthan.

Also last year, a Japanese tourist complained that she was drugged and raped by a group of men in Pushkar.

The latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau shows there has been a phenomenal eight-fold increase in rapes in India since 1971.

It has been decided that safety and security of female tourists will be on the agenda of a major tourism meeting on January 24th in New Delhi.

Foreign tourist arrivals to rise 25%

Foreign tourist arrivals in India in the peak tourism season of 2009-10 is set to witness a growth of 25 per cent over the same period of 2008-09.:azn:

After battling a phase of slowdown which began from the second half of 2008-09, the economy is on the recovery track, bringing cheer to the travel and tourism industry in the country.

The peak tourism season in the country begins from November and continues up to February. The tour operators have witnessed a 20 per cent jump in bookings in the months of November and December 2009.:smitten:

Vijay Thakur, president, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), “India is set to witness a growth of 25 per cent in the peak tourism season of 2009-10 in terms of foreign tourist arrivals. The growth in inbound tourist arrivals to the country would come on the back of the revival in the economy.”

To give a further boost to the tourist arrivals, IATO has drawn up plans to hold roadshows in USA, UK, European Union nations and Australia in 2010 to hard sell India as a tourist hub.

“We have already given a proposal to the Union ministry of tourism for conducting these roadshows to pull the foreign tourists to India. This time, we are trying to bring in more long haul foreign tourists”, Thakur said.

IATO had earlier sought reduction in the tax component on the tariff of tour packages of international tourists to boost India's inbound tourist inflow.

At present, the various taxes like luxury tax and service tax account for 40-45 per cent of the cost of tour packages for the international tourists. IATO is in favour of bringing down the share of taxes in cost of the tour packages, designed for the international tourists, to 15 per cent.

The association had also demanded that the luxury tax should be levied on the actual tariff of the hotels and not on the printed tariff.

India has targeted to attract 10 million foreign tourists by 2010, almost double the figure which the country achieved in 2008. The country recorded foreign tourist arrivals of 5.37 million in 2008 and earned foreign exchange worth Rs 50,730 crore.:yahoo:

Another "Shameless act to defend the rape of tourist"

news.outlookindia.com | GSWC Defends Goa MP Naik's Statement on Rape

Coming out in support of Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik, Goa State Women’s Commission (GSWC) today said that all he was trying to do was to defend the state from being labelled as a crime centre as projected by the media.

"I saw his speech on the television. Probably, he was trying to say that Goa is getting bad name as a crime centre," GSWC Chairman Dr Pramod Salgaoncar told PTI here.

Naik kicked up a storm in Rajya Sabha yesterday by saying that some rape victims invited trouble on themselves by socialising with "strangers" even during late hours.

He also blamed media for highlighting the controversial case of a Russian woman working in Goa who claims she was raped earlier this month by a state politician in his car after having dinner with him.

Salgaoncar said media's projection of Goa as a crime centre and unsafe place is not fair as there are thousands of women who visit here and return back to their states safely and happily.

"Goa is a tourist destination where lakhs of tourists visit. One woman gets raped and media makes so much noise," she said.

Toeing the line similar to that of Goa Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao, the GSWC chairman said that media campaign against the crime was only because the victim was a foreigner. (More)

"When a local woman is raped, media does not make noise over it. For us, woman is woman, she may be a local or a foreigner," she said.

Alemao earlier had said that media was obsessed with white skin and hence was playing up the Russian rape case.

Reacting to the Naik’s statement that the rape on girl who moves with stranger should be treated on different footing, Salgaoncar said that background of the victim should not be the criteria for deciding the kind of rape.

"If it’s rape than consider it as a rape. There should not be any relation to the background, which is irrelevant," she added.

Goa Tourism Minister Asks | Ministers To Quit | Russian Rape Case | Incompetent - Oneindia News

Panaji, Jan 28: Reacting to the rape of a nine-year-old Russian girl, Goa Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco has slammed home minister Ravi Naik, saying that ministers who are unable to resign the portfolios to resign.

Buzz up!"Ministers, who cannot handle their portfolios, should give them up," Pacheco said in a veiled attack to Naik. Pacheco, said that it was time for the state goverment to act against those who fail in fulfilling their duties, as it has put the state in a bad light.

"By now the Congress high command should take action against its ministers who fail to deliver," he said Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) minister.

Pacheco said his appeal to the CM Digambar Kamat to convene a meeting between the home ministry and tourism ministry to discuss issues on tourist safety has fallen on deaf ears.

"I had moved a confidential file to the chief minister calling for an urgent meeting between home ministry and tourism ministry officials in his presence. But there was no response from the chief minister's office," he said.

Expressing his concern over the upsurge in rape crimes, he said that the state should not be allowed to be defamed because of few irresponsible ministers.

"Such incidents are an insult to Goa. Why should the state get a bad name only because of the inefficiency of a few ministers?" Pacheco said.

The case has also been taken up by Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja who had sought a report on Wednesday, Jan 27.

Pacheco has exchanged several bitter words with Naik over the safety issue of tourist in the past, for fear of Goa being labeled as a rape capital.
