An Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed off the coast of Yemen on Friday, according to a news release from U.S. Central Command.

The six service members onboard the helicopter were training approximately 20 miles off the country’s southern coast, according to the release.

Five of the service members were rescued by U.S. forces, but a search is underway for the sixth service member.

Japan’s Defense Ministry on Sunday said it was searching for three crew members of a Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) helicopter in the Sea of Japan after contact was lost with the chopper. One crew member had been rescued uninjured.

The ministry said the SH-60J anti-submarine warfare helicopter lost contact around 90 km (56 miles) off the coast of Aomori Prefecture late on Saturday.

It said the flight data recorder had been located, but did not say what had actually happened to the helicopter, whether it crashed or ditched into the sea. The MSDF has launched an investigation into the incident.

Earlier this month, four Japanese crew members were injured after their CH-101 chopper crashed on land during a training exercise at Iwakuni Air Base in Yamaguchi Prefecture in western Japan.

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Nine Marine Corps aviators who were killed when their New York-based transport plane crashed in Mississippi last month will be honored during a memorial service at their former air base.

The victims of the July 10 crash of the C-130 include nine crewmembers who served in a Marine Forces Reserve transport squadron based at Stewart Air National Guard base in Newburgh in New York’s Hudson Valley. The other seven servicemen killed in the crash included six Marines and a Navy Corpsman from an elite Marine Raider battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The memorial service will occur Sunday afternoon at the Newburgh air base. It’s closed to the public but will be livestreamed.

The plane was headed for pre-deployment training in Arizona when it crashed. The cause remains under investigation.

Three soldiers missing since their UH-60 Black Hawk crashed off the island of Oahu have been declared dead, the Army announced Saturday night.

The Armed Forces Medical Examiner declared 1st Lt. Kathryn Bailey, Staff Sgt. Abigail Milam and Sgt. Michael Nelson deceased after analysis of organic matter discovered among recovered debris matched their DNA, officials said in a statement.

Five soldiers were on board the Black Hawk when it crashed on Aug. 15. The remaining two crew members are still considered duty status - whereabouts unknown, or DUSTWUN. They are Chief Warrant Officer 3 Brian Woeber and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Stephen Cantrell.

All five soldiers belong to 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division.

Two Black Hawk crews were conducting a night training mission between Kaena Point and Oahu’s Dillingham Airfield northwest of Honolulu when communications were lost, officials said.

Search and rescue operations for the crew were suspended Aug. 21 after the soldiers could not be located.

Bailey, 26, entered active-duty military service in August 2015 as an aviation officer.

Milam, 33, joined the Army in August 2011 as a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter repairer.

Nelson, 30, joined the Army in July 2006, also as a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter repairer. He had deployed twice to Afghanistan.

The circumstances of this incident are currently under investigation.

Officials are warning the public that any debris from the crash is considered hazardous and should only be recovered by recovery teams with the proper training and personal protective equipment.

Anyone who sees debris consistent with a Black Hawk along the north and west side of Oahu and the southern and eastern sides of Kauai are asked to call the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade staff duty officer at (808) 656-1080.

The soldier who has been missing since the helicopter he was on crashed off the coast of Yemen has been declared dead.

Staff Sgt. Emil Rivera-Lopez, 31, of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, was declared deceased Thursday, the Defense Department announced in a statement late Friday. He was previously listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown, or DUSTWUN.

On Aug. 25, Rivera-Lopez and five other service members were on board a Black Hawk helicopter when it crashed about 20 miles off Yemen’s southern coast. The incident happened during a training mission in support of U.S. Central Command operations.

The other five service members on board were rescued by U.S. forces.

NEW DELHI: Two Army generals and two other officers had a narrow escape when their Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH) crashed almost immediately after taking off in eastern Ladakh on Tuesday afternoon, once again underlining the high crash rate of fighters, aircraft and choppers in the Indian armed forces.

Lt-General S K Upadhya, general officer commanding of the Leh-based 14 Corps, and Major-General Savneet Singh, GoC of the 3 Infantry Division at Karu, and the others sustained only scratches and minor injuries when the twin-engine Dhruv helicopter hit the ground at the high-altitude Tsogstalu helipad at about 2 pm.

"The indigenous 5.5-ton chopper, on a general reconnaissance and familiarization mission for the new corps commander, crashed barely two minutes after it took off from the helipad located at around 16,000-feet. The crew and passengers are safe and sound but the chopper suffered extensive damage," said an officer.


Though the court of inquiry ordered into the incident will establish the exact reason for the crash, sources said pilots reported "loss of the right rudder (which controls the tail rotor)" soon after getting airborne. "Such things happen in super high-altitude regions because helicopters operate at the very limits of their design and flight envelope. Even a sudden gust of wind can change the entire equation," said a military pilot.

While military aviation is certainly inherently dangerous, it's also true that a high crash rate continues to dog the armed forces. Just since 2011, the three Services have lost over 50 aircraft and 22 helicopters have been lost in crashes, in which at least 85 people have been killed.

Incidentally, Army chief General Bipin Rawat had himself emerged unscathed when his single-engine Cheetah helicopter had crashed immediately after taking off from a helipad in Nagaland in February 2015. The Army generally does not allow two generals from travelling together in a single-engine helicopter in high-altitude areas.

The armed forces, on one hand, are making do with the virtually obsolete single-engine Cheetah/Chetak light utility helicopters because of the failure of successive governments to take decisions in time, defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd's tardy performance and, of course, recurring corruption scandals in defence deals.

On the other, the twin-engine Dhruv helicopters manufactured by HAL have also come under the scanner due to frequent crashes, with the Army alone recording at least 20 accidents since 2002. The armed forces have inducted over 200 Dhruvs since 2002 but the entire fleet has been grounded a few times due to technical snags in the past, which included being found unsuitable for multi-role requirements due to excess weight and limited engine power.

Incidentally, HAL inked yet another contract for 40 additional Dhruvs for the Army and one for the Navy for around Rs 6,100 crore on Monday. This came soon after another deal for 32 Dhruvs for the Navy and Coast Guard was inked with HAL in March.

A trainer aircraft (Kiran) from Hakimpet Air Force Station crashed in Keesara village about 80 km from here on Thursday around 11:45 pm.

According to a defence release, the Kiran aircraft which got airborne from Hakimpet for a routine training mission with a trainee Flight cadet crashed. The pilot is safe. A CoIonel level officer will be ascertaining the cause of the crash.

Keesara police inspector M Surender Gouda, the crash occurred near a stone crusher site.Sources said a major mishap was averted as about 30 labourers were working at the crusher when the mishap took place.

The aircraft started from Hakeempet airbase around 11.30 and crashed within ten minutes after reportedly developing a technical snag. It caught flames and completely burnt.

Flames are brought under control. Within five minutes of the crash, police and the fire tenders reached the spot. Air Force officials have taken control of the crash site

A Spanish Eurofighter jet crashed on Thursday after taking part in a military display in Madrid for Spain’s national day, killing its pilot, the defence ministry said.

“As a result of the accident, the pilot of the plane that crashed on its approach to landing has died,” the ministry said in a statement.

It said the Eurofighter went down near a military base at Albacete, 300 kilometres (180 miles) southeast of the capital.

The Twitter account for the defence ministry’s chief of staff confirmed the pilot’s death.

“Rest in peace, comrade. Thank you for helping us to celebrate the day you have given your life for. We won’t forget you,” it said, posting an image of the Spanish flag pinned with a black ribbon.

A Eurofighter last crashed in Spain in June 2014, killing the pilot when it ploughed into grass short of the runway at the Moron air force base near Seville.

Spain’s national day marks the date that Christopher Columbus first arrived in the Americas in 1492.

It falls this year in the middle of Spain’s biggest political crisis in a decade as Catalonia’s separatist leader is threatening to split the region from the rest of the country.

A traditional military parade took place in Madrid, with fighter jets, military planes and helicopters making several flybys.

An F18 fighter jet crashed on takeoff at a military base near Madrid on Tuesday, killing the pilot — the second time a military plane has come down in Spain in a week. “The pilot of the airplane has died as a consequence of the accident, which happened during take-off,” the Spanish defence ministry said in a tweet following the crash near the Torrejon de Ardoz base, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Madrid.

“Rescue teams are on their way to the scene of the accident,” a ministry spokesman told AFP, adding that the cause of the crash was as yet unknown. The accident came just days after the pilot of a Eurofighter jet was killed Thursday on the approach to landing at a military base at Albacete, 300 kilometres southeast of the capital.


The jet had been taking part in a military display for Spain’s national day. Two other Eurofighter jets crashed in Spain in 2010 and 2014, both times killing the pilot.

Iraq’s Defense Ministry says a military helicopter has crashed during a training exercise, killing all seven crew members on board.

The statement says Mi-17 helicopter crashed Sunday morning in the central Wasit province. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

The province is located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Baghdad, far from the front lines of the war with the Islamic State group.

US-backed Iraqi forces have driven the extremists from nearly all the territory they once controlled, with some fighting still underway near the western border with Syria.

ISTANBUL/ANKARA: A Turkish military transport plane on Wednesday crashed in southern Anatolia while on training exercises, claiming the lives of three army personnel on board, the Turkish Army said in a statement.

The CN-235 CASA plane disappeared from the radar after taking off from Eskisehir air base, in central Turkey, the military said.

The plane, carrying two pilots and one technician, crashed in the southern Isparta province, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) said, offering condolences to the families of “our heroic comrades” who were killed “as a result of a tragic accident.”

The military said a search and rescue mission was immediately launched and the plane's wreckage was located in an area close to Egirdir Lake in the western province of Isparta.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known but local governor, Sehmus Gunaydin, told the state-run TRT television there was dense and thick fog in the region.

“We are working to reach the wreck” of the plane, he said.

The CASA type plane took off from a base in western Anatolian province of Eskisehir at 08:03 GMT and communication had been cut around 09:50 GMT, and a search and rescue operation begun, the army said.

Several emergency teams were dispatched to the crash site, it added.

In December last year, a Turkish fighter jet crashed near an airport in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir but the pilot was able to safely eject from the plane.

A SEPECAT Jaguar combat aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed on 5 June, with the loss of the senior officer pilot.

The single-seat jet came down in a field in the Kutch district of Gujarat state, in the northwest of India near the border with Pakistan. The pilot, Air Commodore Sanjay Chauhan, was killed.

According to national media reports, the aircraft was on a routine training mission when the incident happened shortly after take-off from Jamnagar Air Base at about 1030 h local time. No cause has been given, and an investigation has been launched.
