ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines

A Philippine Air Force pilot and two crewmen died, while another was injured when a military helicopter crashed during a military exercise Thursday in the northern Philippines province of Rizal.

Lt. Xy-zon Meneses, spokesperson for the Army's 2nd Infantry Division, told GMA News the UH-1D helicopter crashed at around 3.00 p.m. local time (0700GMT).

Meneses did not disclose the names of the victims, saying their families are yet to be informed about the incident.

He said military personnel were conducting air to ground and disaster rescue operation training.

"Their practical exercise for the day was over but the chopper experienced engine problem upon landing," he said.

Air Force spokesman Col. Antonio Francisco said all UH-1D helicopters have been ordered grounded pending an investigation as to what caused the incident.

"That’s part of the standard operating procedure until we finish the investigation, or we find out the cause," he said. "We are conducting thorough inspection of the aircraft."

The ill-fated aircraft was one of the seven refurbished UH-1Ds acquired from Rice Aircraft Services a few years ago as part of the AFP Modernization Program.

The bidding for the aircraft was met with controversy after a disgruntled representative of the company said the bidding was rigged by certain Defense officials who received grease money from Rice.

A cargo plane of the Nepal Army with a call sign NA- 048, crashlanded at the rural airport in Bajura district of Nepal on Tuesday. Two cabin crew and an army official were inside the plane which took off for Simikot in Humla district with food provided by the Nepal Food Corporation.

The plane was subsequently diverted to Bajura’s Kolti after failing to land there. Kailash Gurung, the pilot of the crashed plane, is undergoing treatment in Nepalgunj. “The plane veered off the runway and reached the nearby field. Break fail has been reported and we have successfully rescued two of the people inside the sky truck of Nepal Army. We are cutting off the door to rescue another,” the CDO of Bajura, Mr. Devendra Lamichhane, told ANI over phone at 12:50 p.m.

Later, the army and the locals were successful in bringing the flames around the aircraft under control.Bajura’s headquarters Martadi lies some 950-kilometers from capital Kathmandu.

One serviceman killed, 5 injured in An-26 plane accident in Russia's Saratov region - Defense Ministry
MOSCOW. May 30 (Interfax) - One serviceman was killed when an Antonov An-26 airplane made a hard landing and caught fire in Balashov, Saratov region, the Russian Defense Ministry's press service said on Tuesday.

"One serviceman was killed and five crewmembers were rushed to a hospital by a search and rescue service helicopter," the press service said.

The An-26 plane made a hard landing and caught fire as it was attempting to land at the Balashov airfield in the Saratov region, the Defense Ministry said.

"There were six crewmembers on board the plane," it said.

"The injured servicemen are receiving all necessary medical assistance. The preliminary information available from the site of the accident indicates that it could have been caused by a malfunction of one of the engines," the ministry said.

A special commission of the Russian Defense Ministry is en route to the scene, it said.

The An-26, which belonged to a training center of the Krasnodar Higher Aviation School for Pilots, made a hard landing at 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday as it was performing a practice flight.

A prominent major general who has played an important role in the struggle against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) was killed in a helicopter crash in the Şenoba district of the southeastern province of Şırnak.

Major Gen. Aydoğan Aydın was among 13 soldiers killed when the AS 532 Cougar-type helicopter reportedly became tangled in a high-voltage power line shortly after taking off from the Şenoba Brigade Command late on May 31.

Aydın was well-known for his role in the fight against the PKK in Şırnak’s Cizre district, the Sur district of the southeastern province of Diyarbakır and the Nusaybin district of the southeastern province of Mardin.

Debris from a missing Myanmar military plane carrying more than 116 people was found in the Andaman Sea late on Wednesday, a local official and an air force source told AFP.

The plane went missing between the southern city of Myeik and Yangon, according to the office of the Army Chief and an airport source.

"Now they have found pieces of the damaged plane in the sea 218 kms away from Dawei city," said Naing Lin Zaw, a tourism official in Myeik city, adding that the Navy was still searching the sea.

“Communication was lost suddenly at about 1:35 pm (07:05 GMT) when it reached about 20 miles west of Dawei town,” the commander-in-chief’s office said in a statement. It added that search and rescue operations were on.

The airport source, who asked not to be named, said the plane was carrying 105 passengers and 11 crew.

Pieces of a Myanmar military plane which went missing with more than 100 soldiers and family members aboard were found in the Andaman Sea today, a local official said. Navy ships and aircraft had been searching since the afternoon when the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers.

More than a dozen children were believed to be among the passengers on the plane travelling from the southern city of Myeik to Yangon.

"Now they have found pieces of the damaged plane in the sea 136 miles (218 km) away from Dawei city," said Naing Lin Zaw, a tourism official in Myeik, adding the navy was still searching the sea.

An air force source confirmed to AFP that a navy search and rescue ship had found pieces of the plane in the sea an hour's flight south of Yangon, Myanmar's commercial capital.

The commander in chief's office said the plane lost contact at about 1:35 pm (local time) off Myanmar's southern coast.

There was conflicting information about the number of people on board. Giving an updated figure, the office said 106 passengers were on board -- soldiers and family members -- along with 14 crew.

The air force source said more than a dozen of those on board were children. Four naval ships and two air force planes were sent to search for the plane, which was flying at an altitude of more than 18,000 feet (5,486 metres).

It is monsoon season in Myanmar but there were no reports of bad weather at the time the plane went missing.

The plane was a Y-8F-200 four-engine turboprop, a Chinese-made model still commonly used by Myanmar's military for transporting cargo.

The army said it was delivered in March last year and had logged 809 flying hours. The former military junta bought many of the aircraft from Myanmar's giant neighbour during their 50 years of isolated rule, when they were squeezed by Western sanctions.

A former executive at the aviation ministry said many of the aircraft in Myanmar's fleet were old and decrepit.

"Myanmar air force has very bad safety performance," he said, asking to remain nameless. Myanmar's military fleet has a chequered recent history of plane crashes.

All five crew died when an air force plane burst into flames soon after taking off from the capital Naypyidaw in February last year.

Three army officers were killed in June when their Mi-2 helicopter crashed into a hillside and burst into flames in south-central Bago.

A surge in demand for air travel as Myanmar opens up has stretched the impoverished country's aviation infrastructure, in particular in remote airports. Commercial jets have also suffered frequent incidents.

The worst in recent years was in 2012 when an Air Bagan jet crash-landed in thick fog and burst into flames short of the runway at Heho airport, killing one passenger and a motorcyclist on the ground.

A Bulgarian military helicopter crashed into the Black Sea off the Bulgarian coast during tactical drills on Friday, killing one officer and injuring two others, the defense ministry said, according to Reuters.


The helicopter, an AS 565MB Panther, crashed after carrying out a maneuver following artillery shooting drills, the ministry said in a statement, adding that the reasons for the crash are being investigated, Reuters said.

The helicopter's commander died later in hospital, while the other two officers on board were in a stable condition, the ministry said.

NATO member Bulgaria has stepped up military drills over the past two years as part of the alliance's efforts to better protect the region from any potential threat from Russia.

ALGIERS

Two soldiers have been killed and another injured when an Algerian gendarmerie helicopter crashed southwest of the capital, according to local media.

The incident took place when the helicopter was on a routine patrol late Tuesday in Naama province’s El Kasdir area, Al Nahar TV reported.

Algerian authorities have yet to comment over the incident.

For its part, Echorouk TV confirmed that the helicopter belongs to the Border Control Division of the National Gendarmerie, a military branch of the Ministry of Defense responsible for watching the border.

"Civil defense units intervened to evacuate the victims and extinguish the fire," the television channel reported.

This is the second incident of its kind within a month as on May 21, the Ministry of Defense announced the death of three soldiers in an army helicopter crash in the province of Tipaza after hitting a high voltage electric post.

Jaipur: A MiG-23 trainer aircraft of the Indian Air Force on Thursday crashed in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district, with both the pilots ejecting safely.

The incident occurred in Balesar area, SP (Jodhpur Rural) Dr Ravi said.

It was a MiG-23 UB trainer plane and both the pilot and co-pilot are safe, defence source said.

A Court of Inquiry has been ordered.

While MiG-23 fighter aircraft were was phased out way back in 2009, a limited number of its trainer version is still in service because they serve as the training platform for MiG-27 combat jets that are still being used by the IAF.

The MiG-23 BN, renamed in the IAF as Vijay was retired after 28 years of service and flying more than 154,000 hours. The Soviet-era aircraft were inducted in 1981.

However, the air force continue to use the two-seater trainer version – MiG-23 UB.

A MiG-23UB jet trainer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed at Balesar near Jodhpur in Rajasthan on Thursday.

Both the pilots have ejected safely.

IAF sources said that the jet crashed approximately 60 km from Jodhpur while on a routine training mission.

Mig-23UB trainers are used to train pilots for the Mig-27 fighters in service with the IAF.

A Court of Inquiry (CoI) has been ordered.

The three-member crew of an Advance Light Helicopter (ALH) were on a heroic mission rescuing people stranded due to a landslide in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday when their helicopter went missing, according to IAF officials. Local police officials on Wednesday evening said they have located the wreckage, which is yet to be confirmed by the IAF.

“Certain leads that the ground parties obtained will be intensively searched once the weather clears on Thursday,” an IAF official said.

According to Nabin Payeng, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), the wreckage of the chopper was sighted by a police team at the confluence of a waterfall and the Nyorch river near Chopoyoha in Papum Pare district. However, the fate of the three personnel on board is still unclear.

“Since the spot is located in a deep gorge, rescue teams will take time to reach,” Mr. Payeng said.

The ALH was on a flood relief mission from Tezpur to Arunachal on the request of the State government. It had carried out several sorties and completed the mission after rescuing over 40 people stranded in Sagalee and Dambuk due to massive landslides caused by heavy rain.


“It was on the last sortie to pick up the ground team when it went missing around 4 p.m.,” a senior officer said.

A joint search operation was launched by the IAF along with Indo Tibetan Border Police, Arunachal Pradesh police and India Reserve Battalion which were hindered by bad weather.

IAF Su-30 fighter aircraft and C-130 transport aircraft carried out search in ground mapping mode using their Synthetic Aperture Radar while Mi-17 and ALH helicopters carried out visual search.

During the last five financial years (2012-13 to 2016-17) and current year (upto 18.07.2017) 29 fighter aircraft including 5 Sukhoi-30 and 3 trainer aircraft have crashed. Technical Defects and Human Error were the main causes of the accidents.

Every aircraft accident in the IAF is investigated by a Court of Inquiry (CoI) to ascertain the cause of accident and the recommendations of the completed Courts of Inquiry are implemented.

Training of pilots in the IAF is regularly reviewed to stay abreast of the latest teaching techniques utilising state of the art training aids. This is a continuous process.

Various preventive measures are being taken, including invigoration of Aviation Safety Organisation, streamlining of accident / incident reporting procedure, analytical studies and quality audits of the aircraft fleets to identify vulnerable areas to avoid aircraft accidents. Accident prevention programmes have been given an added thrust to identify risk prone / hazardous areas specific to the aircraft fleets and operational environment, to ensure safe practices / procedures.

This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre in a written reply to Shri Om Birla and others in Lok Sabha today.

When the trainer aircraft crashed near Almaty (Kazakhstan), an ethnic Ukrainian who was a citizen of Kazakhstan died, the Ukrainian Embassy in Kazakhstan told Interfax-Ukraine.

"As it became known to the embassy, the deceased instructor pilot had the citizenship of Kazakhstan, but he is an ethnic Ukrainian," the press service of the embassy told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

Earlier on this day, the press service of the Civil Aviation Committee of the Ministry of Investment and Development of Kazakhstan reported that at 09:53 on Thursday (local time), while performing the training task at a distance of 2 km from the Azem aerodrome control point (Almaty region, 43 km from Almaty), the Tecnam P-2002JF aircraft crashed (registration number UP-LA321).

Director of the department of investigation of traffic accidents and incidents of the ministry, Zhanibek Taizhanov, said that after the plane took off from the conveyor, a stall occurred, resulting in the aircraft being burnt and completely destroyed. At the time of the incident of the aircraft a pilot-instructor and a cadet were on board - both have been killed. The ministry creates a commission to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

At the same time, a number of Kazakhstani mass media report that as a result of the plane crash, pilot instructor Kurchenko, born in 1977, who according to preliminary information was a citizen of Ukraine, and cadet E.Abishev, born in 1996, died.

A Pakistan Air Force pilot has been killed after his plane crashed due a technical fault during a routine operational flight in the country’s Punjab province, a statement said on Thursday.

The plane crashed in the Sabzazar area of Mianwali, some 350-kilometre from Lahore, on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the Air Force’s media wing, the pilot of the aircraft lost his life as he failed to eject at the time of the crash.

“Wing Commander Mohammad Shahzad was flying an F-7 aircraft when it encountered a technical fault and crashed near the Sabzazar area of Mianwali, some 350-km from Lahore, late on Tuesday,” it said.

“The body of the deceased pilot was recovered from the site of the incident and shifted to Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Base MM Alam, Mianwali, where the funeral prayers were also offered,” the statement said, adding that an investigation into the crash has been launched by the air force.

According to an eyewitness, the fighter jet crashed in a forest just after take-off from MM Alam airbase (Mianwali).

He said soon after the incident the air force personnel reached there and cordoned off the area.

According to reports, some 10 F-7PGs/FT-7PGs (aircraft) have crashed during the last 10 years or so.

The PAF has more than 50 of the Chinese-made aircraft in its fleet.

A US F-18 fighter jet suffering an engine problem crash landed Saturday at Bahrain International Airport and its pilot ejected from the aircraft after it ran off the runway, authorities said. The pilot escaped unharmed.

The crash disrupted flights to and from the island nation off the coast of Saudi Arabia that’s home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet. Images on social media showed the grey fighter jet’s nose tipped into the air but largely intact after what the Navy described as an “uncontrollable” landing.

The F-18 took off from the USS Nimitz, an aircraft carrier now in the Persian Gulf, said Cmdr. Bill Urban, a fleet spokesman. While in flight, the plane suffered an engine malfunction, forcing the pilot to divert, Urban said.

The pilot initially tried to land at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain, but instead had to divert to the island’s commercial airport, Urban said.

“Due to the malfunction, the aircraft could not be stopped on the runway and the pilot ejected from the aircraft as it departed the runway,” the commander said in a statement.

Naval officials began an investigation into the crash and were trying to help the airport resume operations, Urban said. Bahrain’s Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry called the crash landing a “minor incident” in a statement and said flights resumed at the airport several hours later.
