Taliban leader's death suggests Pakistan Army active in North Waziristan

The killing of a senior Taliban commander in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on 24 February has prompted speculation that the Pakistan Army has made deeper inroads into the region than previously realised.

Neither the army nor civilian government officials in Pakistan accepted responsibility for the death of Asmatullah Shaheen, a leading Taliban commander. However, a Pakistani intelligence official stated : "This hit was not amateur. It was done with a great deal of precision. I don't think this could have been done by anyone other than a solid team, like a military trained team".

Shaheen was on the Pakistan Army's most wanted list of Taliban commanders and had a USD120,000 bounty on his head since 2009. In November 2013, Shaheen served as the temporary head of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) after the killing of Hakimullah Mehsudin in a US unmanned aerial vehicle strike. Mullah Fazlullah, another Taliban commander, was eventually appointed to lead the TTP.

Eyewitness accounts in Pakistani media spoke of gunmen shooting and killing Shaheen and three other passengers in a jeep. His death came as Pakistan's air force and army began to step up attacks on suspected Taliban sanctuaries in North Waziristan. Pakistani and western officials have stated that a major offensive in the region, which is the main TTP stronghold, appears imminent.

COMMENT
Shaheen was involved in attacks on the Pakistan Army so his death is a morale booster for many senior army officers. If it is proven that army personnel were involved, the operation may also demonstrate the service's ability to target senior TTP militants once considered beyond Pakistan's reach.

However, even without Pakistan Army involvement in this event, Shaheen's killing has removed a figure who unified part of the Taliban movement and may have played a role in resisting the imminent Pakistan Army campaign.

If they go hand in hand with terrorists then dont blame us. We dont intend to hit them, but if they die then it is on them.

Leader your pacifist agenda will destroy Pakistan. Collateral damage is bound to occur when the surrounding environment needs to be cleansed from filth. Currently peace talks has failed to curb bombings and target killings across Pakistan, henceforth an aggressive military maneuver is required.

Full-scale North Waziristan operation not in Pakistan’s favour: Imran
By Web Desk
Published: March 3, 2014

ISLAMABAD: A full-scale military operation in North Waziristan was not in Pakistan’s favour, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairperson Imran Khan said on Monday.

Imran was speaking to the media in Islamabad.

The PTI chief emphasised that the country was saved from destruction after the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the government decided to halt armed attacks and continue with peace talks.

“God has given us another chance to solve the issue peacefully and move in the right direction,” Imran said.

He reiterated his stance regarding US involvement in terrorism in Pakistan and said America doesn’t want peace in Pakistan until it withdraws forces from Afghanistan. “US wants to keep Pakistan Army engaged in the country while it exits Afghanistan,” Imran said.

The PTI chairperson called on the government and the TTP to work together and isolate those elements that are against peace.
