Military helicopter crash in Mansehra kills at least nine

I fail to understand why 2 specialists and 1 double specialist were sent to do an evacuation of a single soilder when it could have been easily managed by a medic or a GDMO.Due to this thoughtless step army has lost its future head of pulmonology department and 2 other specialists.A sad day indeed.

Aaahhhh That breaks my heart.
I believe its not only what you are saying and it may be something additionally need to be done that is why so many expert were together. But their is something wrong in their mind why don't they set a protocol to not to travel so many experts or senior level people together. We have seen an Mi-17 crash earlier this year in which some foreign dignitaries were lost their lives and now this incident make me think that we have lost our ability to learn lessons from our past and our mistakes.

they might have joined the ride for something else while the copter was going to gilgit ..not necessarily for the particular case.

these machines are being used over the clock in very challenging conditions. pumas are handful and are not used much and relegated .. if they are not flying they cant crash.

you are ignorant because you dont have a clue the number of sorties these helicopters do everyday that run in hundreds.. by your definition they would have all wiped off along with their occupants.

Sir, the Pumas arent handful at all , they are too in sizable numbers .Actually, according to the world Air forces 2015 , with the addition of the ex UAE pumas, we have about 45 of them now compared to the 49 mi-17s. They are widely operated as well , there are plenty of images of them delivering aid to flood victims.

And its not just Pakistan , this is infact the 21st Mi 17 crash in 5 years worldwide. If that doesn't represent a high attrition rate then i don't know what does . What i was trying to say was that the age of the helicopter fleet is a growing issue and relying on a 3 decade old machine isn't part of the solution. Transport helos have a huge role , not only in the ongoing operation but also in disaster management . So its only fair that look for a better platform , instead of losing precious lives.

Mi17s are rough and tough ones. I cannot compare it with Pumas but this is for sure it is one of the best in its category. Chinese Army operate around 250 of these alone. Even we are considering a follow on order for another 48 pieces to replace the older Mi8s. If you see the list of users of Mi17s, you will find that every nation in the world with an airforce of army aviation have them in their inventory.

Please do keep in mind that over 12000 Mi-17's or variants have been made to date since the 70's. A fair few would have been retired, but still that is a sizeable number.

Maybe the patient had to be stabilized before hand at the spot before being evacuated as he was critical.

As per my info and also from what I have read elsewhere, there was one surgeon, anesthetist, and a pulmonologist.

So maybe the guy had a severe heart problem, had to be operated upon at the spot. That is why you need a surgeon and an anesthetist and pulmonologist.

The patient was operated upon by a team in CMH gilgit ,patient was stable other then a pelvic bleed which was resolved by internal packing.Such an extraction required a surgical trainee at the most along with 2-3 medics.Looks like an administrative error IMO.

Mi-17 is generally considered a very good heli, economical and easy to maintain and operate. Though probably it is not as safe as Western helis but still it does the job.

There are two issues though, one is the engine. The TV-3 engine of this heli has problems when flying in high altitude, high temperature, high humidity conditions. In fact this reason has caused huge problems for IrAn-140 project. In high altitude mountains the failure of one engine in a loaded heli might cause loss of altitude with devastating result or (in case of aircraft inducing a thrust imbalance as well as reduced thrust).

The other issue is the different philosophical attitude between Russian and Western system. Switching from one system to the other can cause numerous maintenance and operative difficulties since the engineering and operating cultures of these two systems are different. In West there is a deep emphasis on safety, while in Russian system, the emphasis is on getting the job done regardless of safety.
