Military expresses concern over Karachi violence – The Express Tribune

The participants at the 141st Corps Commanders’ Conference at General Headquarters, chaired by COAS General Ashfaq Kayani, discussed on Monday the security situation in the country in general and Karachi in particular.

“The forum expressed concern over the law and order situation in Karachi and its ramifications or implications on the national economy,” the military said in a statement after army chief General Kayani met his top generals.

The participants said they hoped the recent measures taken by the Sindh government would help improve the security situation in the metropolis.

Karachi has become a battleground with authorities struggling to stem the violence, blamed on activists from political parties representing competing ethnic groups, from spiralling.

The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan says 800 people, most of them poor, have died since January, including 300 last month alone.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters in Karachi that the government had taken steps to clear out stockpiles of illegal weapons by cancelling all firearm licences at the end of the month, forcing owners to reapply.

“At present some licence holders have illegally acquired hundreds of weapons on a single licence, which will end next month,” said Malik.

“From September anyone caught with a weapon with the old licences will be dealt with seriously. Such people could be tried in anti-terrorism courts and get sentences of seven to 14 years,” he added.

Malik said the government’s action would bring “a permanent peace” to Karachi, which has a population of 18 million and accounts for about one fifth of the country’s entire gross domestic product.

A tentative calm has held since the government last week deployed hundreds of extra security forces in troubled neighbourhoods.

The military said government measures should “help redress the situation”.

The human rights commission says the violence in Karachi is the deadliest since 1995, when more than 900 killings were reported in the first half of the year.

I shared a article today by Talal Hussain, in which he wrote that ISI and MI know exactly the locations of the gangs of Karachi, (probably with their names etc) and they update their information on daily basis...

When i was a kid it was a dream to go to Karachi. It was described to me by my father as a place of dreams and a place with so much to offer. A thriving port and airport too. Its so sad to here the place being dragged through this turmoil and now being more like a nightmare. I think its about time for the army to sort this out. I think Zardari and co are too busy counting the £££ they have looted.

they cannot without government asking, and government is not sincere... moreover, taking out Gangs like that is not easy job... America was only able to do so after bombardment in newYork by their Naval ships, and artillery by Army.

Yes it used to be I clearly remember days of 70's (Although was very young), 80's and then early part of 90's. Since the time this killer organization MQM with other racist evil parties like PPI, JS etc. were not there but the moment it got any base, poor citizen's of Karachi of which majority were Urdu speaking were left at their mercy by every looser government due to their petty & evil motives. I myself is a Urdu speaking and am proud of it as we are the one whose fathers actually fought for the independence but these thugs who I believe are just using mohajir name for their personal benefit.

May Allah guide us all and protect all Pakistani's esp. citizen's of Sind province who are left at the mercy of terrorist belonging to all the political parties esp. PPP, MQM/ MQM-H, ANP, JS, JI, PML (All factions) etc.

Thanks

Apparently the US, Afghanistan and the TTP, oh, and India, of course have taken the summer off - so, it's mighty white of the Jihadi army to give the politicians some direction.

very well said, as I understand people are locked up in their political and ethnic affiliations, hence speak half of the truth, that is blame the other party/ethnicity for disturbance... this is what happens in a civil war...

It's all a lacking: the lack of political will.

The ruling elite is too disconnected to feel the pain that abounds the roads of city, once called the city of lights. The day these politicians want to bring peace, it will come but the price may be political and that exactly is what haunts them.

Endshot: Let justice be done, even if heavens fall!

these parties are actually behind the target killings, that is the only reason why police can not arrest anyone.
