Militants in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula attacked two military checkpoints, killing at least five soldiers Saturday in the latest violence there targeting security forces, officials and state media said.

Egypt's state-run MENA news agency reported that at least five soldiers had been killed and seven wounded in an attack near the town of Sheikh Zuweid, which sparked clashes with the militants. It referred to only a single checkpoint attack.

Egyptian security officials, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters, said militants launched the attacks on two checkpoints using rocket-propelled grenades.

Egyptian military spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Both of the checkpoints were the sites of a major assault claimed by the Sinai affiliate of the Islamic State group on July 1. The military has said that multi-checkpoint assault killed at least 17 soldiers. Officials from several branches of Egypt's security forces previously told the AP that the attack killed dozens more.

Last year, the main insurgent organization operating in Sinai pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State group, which holds a third of Iraq and Syria.

An Egyptian navy vessel was targeted Thursday by militants affiliated with the Islamic State group, who claimed they destroyed it with a rocket while it was anchored off the Sinai's Mediterranean coast. Samir said at the time that the vessel caught fire in an exchange of fire with "terrorists" on the shore and that there were no fatalities among its crew members.

. .
The Egyptian military's response has been very restrained, probably to avoid civilian casualties.

. .
No, 0.5 soldiers killed while Terrorist lost 5000.. Media should report facts to the world.

Or the actual numbers. That would be great! Better yet get the actual casualty numbers correct.

Maybe Sisi will finally understand what kind of virus Syria is facing now, all with the support of oil rich Arab terror states who bring nothing but backwardness, intolerance and death. But it's highly unlikely.

Feel free to post updates in the main thread.

I'm not surprised any more that media only report the losses while the Egyptian Armed Forces has killed near 60 terrorists in one day!
Doesnt matter if you kill 1000 terrorists a day. What matters is that you degrade their capabilities to a point that they do no pose a threat anymore.

Maybe Sisi will finally understand what kind of virus Syria is facing now, all with the support of oil rich Arab terror states who bring nothing but backwardness, intolerance and death. But it's highly unlikely.
If Sisi had a sane mind he would cooperate with the Syrian government against terrorists. But no, he chooses the opposite direction. Now he is facing terrorists himself... short sighted leader.

Here in Egypt....Most people knows that the government has a different point of view for Syria away from Saudia Arabia....as the Egyptian government wants to keep the core of the Syrian army and the Syrian state as general without Bashar....for us Egyptians we know from the very beginning that this Syrian (Revolution) is not only from Syrian people but also some other countries are supporting terrorists in Syria like Qatar.

Well, I hope that's the view of majority in Egypt.

If only Egypt could lead the Arab world again, even though it doesn't have relations with my country, but it would still benefit the whole region. Now we have bunch of oil-rich sheikhs who are propping up thousands of terrorists all over ME and spreading extremists and nutjobs all over the place.

Do you blame them....you have to put yourself in their shoes....Iraq,Lebanon and Yemen there are militia supported by Iran.
If we need to live in this region in peace all support for militants or terrorists must stop.
Btw...after June 30 revolution in Egypt and some voices coame from Iran supporting Egyptian people against MB I thought that Iran will start cooling down the tension but after that they started to talk about (Democracy) and other things...but for me King abdullah of Saudi Arabia...has a great speech for supporting Egypt against the west...he was a great man and Egypt will never forget great men support at that critical time of our history.

Everyone is wise after the event :disagree:

No offense but sadly, expect an awful long-termed surprise right after this new canal thing completed.

There is no 'Iranian militia' anywhere in Middle East and you are repeating the same old narrative repeated by Arab sheikhdoms. In all countries you mentioned, it's actually the terrorists and the ideology from the GCC countries that is destroying them. In Iraq, it is Daesh, in Lebanon, there is Nusra/IS and their sympathizers, in Egypt, again Daesh, in Yemen, it is Saudis who are destroying the country and strengthening Al-Qaeda and Daesh, and all of those scums are gathered in one place in Syria.

Right now, Iran doesn't have any concerns about Egypt, same as few years ago, since 2 countries don't have diplomatic relations and don't have any contacts. It's been 30 years now. The funny thing is, GCC Arabs won't let Egypt to have relation with Iran, while all of them already have relations with us, and some even have billions of dollars trade with us.

Anyway, Egypt's current situation is very disappointing, and it is far far away than what it was decades ago. Now Egyptian leader has to appease oil rich Arabs for some loans and money, and that is very sad.

No one in this world can stop Egypt from doing any thing...USA,RUSSIA or GCC but we realized the game earlier than you...if you want something from me...what would you give me in return.
Btw Hezbullah was supported by Iran years before ISIS...if you deny that they will say we have nothing to do with jabhetelnosra and ISIS....
About Egypt-Iran relations....i have only one concern....Sadat for us is a HERO.....i don't know why you are hate him and naming a street by the name of his Killer...!?!
