2004 is the date of the copyright NOT the date of font's availability to the public.
Your work is entitled for a copyright as soon as it takes a tangible form,
which by no means translates to its availability for public use.
Calibri designer told Dawn News that he started designing the font in 2004. You see the year 2004 against the copyright notice because the font became "tangible work" and thus entitled for a copyright notice for Microsoft long before it'd be fit for public use.
In a development environment, developers get copyright protection for
Alpha versions of their products all the time because they need it. There are examples of companies stealing one developer's half finished work and hiring another to build on it.
I've been building a website for a comedian from Wales for three months and despite it not being open to the public, I've placed a copyright notice in the footer because I need to protect the code even from those who have early access to it (his friends and my potential future clients).
Conclusion: 2004 is the year the designer
started designing Calibri
version 0.90 and got it copyrighted.
