Could be. By focusing on importing cheaper made cars from India, the car factories in Mexico can focus on making better margins and optimization for exporting their products to the US/Canada through NAFTA.

I dont think its a straight re-badging...Mexico will get in serious trouble (the NAFTA clauses are pretty water tight) and it will be easy to find them out lol.

So, I'm not sure why the article mentions the distance as a limitation. Sea freight charges for automotive-related products should not be high. That similarly goes for RMG - Unless it is air freight.

BD exports to Mexico (which I would assume is mostly RMG) is around 250 million USD as of 2015.

The growth has also been somewhat slow....the exports were 181 million USD in 2011.

Thats about 8% growth rate each year in exports on a low base. More remains to be done.

In comparison India exports to Mexico over the same period increased from 1.8 billion USD to 4.1 billion...about 23% growth each year.

"Auto component sector is very strong. There are four Mexican companies operating in this sector and more are planning to set up shop here," Mexican Ambassador to India Melba Pria said here today at an interactive session with The Bengal Chamber.

Pria said West Bengal is not known much in the Latin American country and the state should undertake a campaign to attract Mexican companies to invest in the state.

The diplomat expects ties between the two countries to improve in future.

Much scope for growth for sure. I am looking forward to seeing BD develop some new export industries...a lot of people are saying the name "Walton"...but it will be a very competitive environment for sure...especially to develop the scale needed to outprice established (esp chinese) generic brands at similar quality.

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--India’s total vehicle production in August rose by 16.1% year on year to 2.31m units, with domestic sales up by 23.7% at 2.01m units, industry data showed on Thursday.

Two-wheelers accounted for 79.8% of the total production and 82% of overall sales, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Production of passenger vehicles in August grew by 9.99% year on year to 324,599 units, with sales up 16.7% at 258,722 units and exports rising by 27% at 75,483 units.

I am looking forward to seeing BD develop some new export industries...a lot of people are saying the name "Walton"...but it will be a very competitive environment for sure...especially to develop the scale needed to outprice established (esp chinese) generic brands at similar quality.

Walton products are all manufactured in China.

The design and engineering phase are done in Bangladesh.

Well Loki is partially right. Walton has a huge (HUGE) range of items they market. Some are locally made (larger volume and in demand items like Fridges and Motorcycles), yet some (experimental marketing) items are indeed imported in SKD form and assembled locally (like laptops and phones).

You can't start making complicated items like laptops and phones from scratch overnight.

Like any good business concern - they have to gauge demand and look at costs.

If it makes more sense to make locally then they will. A lot of items are made from scratch, such as refrigerators and aircons.

I'm prepared to be proven wrong.....

In any case what does it matter?

Washing machines, refrigerators, rice/pressure cookers, microwaves are made all over South Asia for domestic consumption, it proves or disproves nothing really....

Now if you start exporting these items in huge numbers then we're talking export-led growth a la China, which means something at *some* point....like it did for China.
