Mexico is top destination for India’s automobile exports

In the US market - where customer is king, the Govt. enforces ongoing CAFE fuel efficiency standards via penalties *and* safety standards via airbag requirements - at the SAME time. The more competitive a market is the thinner the margin for car-makers. Nowadays almost all new corolla size models (Nissan Sunny/Sentra, Mazda 3, Ford Escort, Chevy Cruze/Daewoo Lacetti) comes with the following safety features almost as standard in US market (because it is cheaper to fit these electronics at the outset than not).

1. Adaptive cruise control
2. Lane departure and Blind-spot occupancy warning
3. Anti-collision braking

Not to mention advanced voice activated GPS, phone commands and even finding suitable restaurants nearby.

In Brazil and India lawmakers are in the pocket of automakers hence the lax safety standards....and negligible features. These guys are minting money in India.

Indians should give preferential treatment to their own automakers (Tata. Mahindra) to compete on a more level playing field in their home turf. I'm surprised what Indian politicians gain by giving advantage to Japanese and Korean auto companies.

This is definitely not the case in China, although Chinese cars don't have a large export market, relative to India's.
I dont think we should match european/american safety standard... we should not be overzealous with our attitude towards safety and kill the nascent export industry.
I dont have the data to prove but most deaths on road in india is definitely not of car drivers, they could be pedestrians, autowallah, bikers as @Anubis suspected. Most of indian cars are for city driving, we dont drive between cities, we use trains. (the roads are not that good, and its dangerous).
Car is the safest place to be if you are on indian road.
As to preferential treatment to indian car makers, I am not sure it will be legal as per international law. We encouraged/invited automakers from other countries to set shop, manufacture cars in India, and they became so successful they even are exporting. Why will we kill our success story by bringing protectionism? There is no politician-businessmen nexus/cabal that operates, its just that customer expectation is lower than european/US standard and they match our low expectation. They have no reason to give extra safety features(standard everywhere) in a price sensitive market when consumer does not appreciate it.

tbh, i acted the same way when i rode my 110cc bike. buttersmooth shifts n low end torque made me feel road raja, untill i started to learn driving four wheelers. i realized how irritating is it for the drivers to negotiate indian traffic, add to that the road rajas like me make life impossible for the poor fellows.
after an accident (a bus braked suddenly in front), i shunned my bike for good and decided to get myself a four wheeler. about time.

btw, neither did i broke traffic rules, nor did i broke n orvm s.
unfortunately, excepting one case, i was in serious accidents when i was stationary, at a proper position, with indicator lights on.
never had serious accidents when i was on move except the exception i was talking about.

Are the export versions made separately or follow different standards...because if memory serves me right Indian VWs were deemed unsafe by the EU..Mexico might not maintain that standard but what about the UK?


I don't think they will adopt them unless they see a big opportunity to enter the US market...adopting US standards for the Indian market will essentially jack up the price and kill the whichever company does it.

Or you can always cheat...like VW did with its emissions...but if you get caught the companies will go bankrupt to compensate for people's "emotional distress". And we here will be getting 20 phone calls a day with an annoying automated voice going "have you been sold an Indian car recently...." :p:

You may have stumbled upon the answer.
The cars that Mexico makes follow stringent US standards that may not be applicable in much of South America. This makes the cars pricey. They could open another line making cars with lax standards...but that would cause an outcry.

Solution: Import them and simply plead ignorance.

Mexico has been the single largest export market for Volkswagen India where over 80% of the export volume was shipped in 2015.

So we have exported just one car model in 5 years, 2/3rds of the entire car population on BD streets. Its not even close to the biggest one by export volume.

Well on second thought it is possible car manufacturers are "testing the waters" in Mexico/South America with models that have proved popular in Asia that are built in India. They could for instance be trying to head off a Chinese car invasion.

I agree, being a neighboring country to India does have some repercussions.

Don't drag India into this. You belong to a pathetic LDC hellhole which cannot even produce anything more advanced than textiles & couldn't even gain Independence on its own.

Now go stitch some garments in your sweatshop.
