Noida: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday inaugurated the 33-acre Dalit Prerna Sthal or the Ambedkar Park in Noida. Mayawati spent Rs 650 crore for the development of the park, which has several statutes of Dalit leaders.
The park has 24 pink sandstone elephants, the electoral symbol of Mayawati's party the Bahujan Samaj Party, 12 life-size statues of Dr BR Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and the UP Chief Minister herself.
The estimated cost of each statue is over Rs 6 crore and each elephant statue costs Rs 70 lakh. In fact Mayawati spent Rs 2500 crores on five such major parks across UP.
But the Noida memorial to Ambedkar has had a chequered history.
In September 2009, a Supreme Court committee recommended putting a halt on the constructions as the project did not have an environment clearance. In December 2010, the Supreme Coourt gave a green signal to Ambedkar Park saying the park is not on forestland.
Environmentalists had alleged the project led to ravaging of Noida's green belt and the loss of 6000 trees. To make matters worse the concrete park has come up right next to Okhla Bird Sanctuary that caused the activists to cry foul.

Some argue that it is a symbol of Dalit pride while others say that its just a waste of money especially for a cash strapped state like UP. What do you guys think about this?

No Offense mate but if she distributes same kind of amount to the people who are below the poverty line or if she give that kind of money to some other better infrastructure, then i will proud of that.
but only one sophisticated park with the spend of Rs 650 crore.....:hitwall:
its rather disgusting..:bad:
i am very sorry to tell that...

Stupid ******!!! Same waste of space who had her professional BGs demean themselves by wiping her shoes, creating a dedicated police force to guard statues of her and sending a private plane for her SANDALS!!! What will it take to oust her from power?? Who the F**K is voting for her? In my country some MPs claiming for chocolate bars and rail tickets on their expense accounts was a MAJOR scandal and yet she continues this outrageous behaviour openly. Add to that she represents one of the poorest states in India.

Everyday she remains in power pulling this nonsense is a further stain on Indian politics.

when a state like UP ,which is struggling with literacy rate , poor roads, some parts without electricity and increasing bribery, rapes, etc....How on earth someone spending money of this magnitude for parks.. Is it the place to rest for people who are affected by all these social/cultural/economic issues...

Nice thought process...We need educated CM's from here...:hitwall:

why not spend 650 crore on health care or socio-economic development in U.P? get this btch out of power she corrupt and fugly

Despite all this, im not that worried. Because the ball has already started to roll. Remember lalu? He is NOWHERE now.

Dalits have gone through something that we in cities cant fully understand. Rural UP is really messed up. Its like if the blacks were given a president right after slavery was abolished in the usa, they wont care if he spends millions to get his shoes flown in from canada.

Every few months she has a little drama where she gets a yadav or some other caste etc police officer ad whips them on air or make a big fuss. To most people who vote for her its like getting a itch scratched on a bodypart we dont even have anymore. From our perspective its tough to understand. Most of her voters dont even know about good governance, and what it can do for you. BUT her time is limited. Over a period of time people living in the state will meet people living outside, ESPECIALLY bihar, and realize that if not theirs, their kids life can be different.

If the first of the BIMARU states, Bihar, can grow at 14% and people from EVERY CAST vote for nitish kumar, UP orissa Maha others can do it too. Voting for good governance is an idea whose time has come, the seed has already been planted. So relax, these yadavs, mayas etcc etc can only go on so long.

. . .
this is when democracy fails when people vote for idiots to power vote for socio-economic growth and development not corruption and money wasted on statues of low caste people.

Why is Ambedkar's name being tarnished by these charlatans? Why not call it Kanshi Ram Park, rather than soil Ambedkar's name for all posterity. The park itself doesn't surprise me. One of my friends hails from a UP village, famous as a stronghold of Mulayam. From the time Mayawati has been in power his village has 18 hours of power outage everyday. Don't be angry, pity the people of UP. At least Bihar is doing better..
