He probably emotionally neglected his son and thought about himself and quickly tried to "fix him" by torturing him. Clearly this man has no capacity to deal with real life problems.

Idk of the details of this case, but I have a friend who's father has mental health issues.

He had a breakdown whilst in Pakistan and one of the courses of treatment recommended by mental health "professionals" at the time was electric shock therapy.

If what you say is true, TJ and his son could have been victim of such quacks.

Well his son was mentally challenged. He also showed son to many doctors. I think he did whatever he could.

Don't ask Allah to put you in such situation and show what would you do.

This is the reason pakistan has become one of the places with most patients of depression....according to a study around 2 crore ,that's around 10 percent of population of pak are suffering from one mental disorder or the other...you don't have the awareness nor the infrastructure( psychologists,psychiatrists) to deal with the problem because you see everything with religious lens....a person with bipolar disorder,schizophrenia etc can't control his feelings of fear,anxiety nervousness etc because it's not in his hand...it is related to chemical imbalances in the brain...it requires treatment
Anyway this is Tariq Jameel s another son telling the cause of his brother's death.

Or worse still - they consider mental illness as effects of jadoo and jinn.

It's ridiculous how little awareness there is.
