What do you mean in this day and age? Religion had always been a force of division. That has been the purpose of religion from day one, to reinforce tribalism while distinguishing one's own tribe from other tribes.

Well in Japan we live in a secular society that teaches appreciation of other's faith. We have Muslims, Christians, living in harmony with the majority Shinto and Buddhist practitioners. In fact we even have Shinto practitioners attending Christian churches and even Muslim mosques to experience prayer in those areas. As we believe in universal 'truths' in each religion.

It is just radical for me as Japanese who comes from a land where practitioners of different faiths get a long -- to hear about Muslims killing other fellow Muslims, or Christians killing Muslims, or vice versa.

In this modern age, are we not going to rise above minor differences and focus on collective good? Hmm. I wish the MIddle East could adopt more collectivist ideology instead of rabid tribalism....
