Somali Pirates Shifting Location Towards India: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar

Bhubaneswar, Odisha: Beaten back in their usual area of operations, Somali pirates are "shifting their location" towards India, but the country is watchful to deal with such threats, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Sunday.

"Today's threats are not traditional. Somali pirates, after being neutralised by various countries' navies, are shifting their locations towards India. Because their (shipping) lanes are heavily guarded, they have moved 30-40 nautical miles, although they still are 450 nautical miles away from India.

"They may not be next to India but... We are watchful and careful," Mr Parrikar said at an international conference on 'India & the Indian Ocean: Renewing the Maritime Trade & Civilisational Linkages', organised by the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS) jointly with Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).

Calling for greater cooperation between the neighbouring countries, he said, "The Indian Ocean can be an enricher and also a destroyer, hence we should also be prepared for disaster and develop strong relationships and communication with neighbouring countries to avoid any kind of disaster."

Stressing that the Indian Ocean region is "very important for us", Mr Parrikar pointed out that it "accounts for more than 50 per cent of the world's oil reserves and more than 45 per cent of the world's gas reserves".

Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre urges Supreme Court to extend stay in Italy | Zee News
Last Updated: Tuesday, April 7, 2015 - 10:55

New Delhi: Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court for extension of his stay in Italy on health grounds.

Latorre, along with his colleague, Sergeant Salvatore Girone, was accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast, apparently mistaking them for pirates in February 2012.

The Marines were serving as security personnel on Italian oil tanker MT Enrica Lexie and were crossing the Indian Ocean at that time.

The apex court September 12, 2014, had allowed Latorre to go back to Italy for his treatment, recovery and rehabilitation for four months, after he suffered a brain stroke.

The SC, in December 2014, refused the pleas of murder accused, Massimiliano Latorre, seeking extension of his stay in Italy on health grounds and his fellow marine permission to travel there for Christmas, leading them to withdraw their applications.

Interesting, his previous extension is ending soon. Lets see what the supreme court decides.

A bench comprising justices A.R. Dave and Kurian Joseph fixed the plea of Latorre for hearing on April 9.

On January 14, the apex court had granted three months extension to Latorre to stay in his country on medical grounds after the Centre said there was no objection on his plea on humanitarian ground.

Looks like the Italians are behaving in a proper manner and applying for extension via court. If he truely needs it, I hope that the court gives him an extension.

This is Indian Judiciary System unlike other system where rights are openly violated. Still waiting for the other system to give explaination, why things are not like this for even legal Indian immigrants.

Still other nations system should uphold the rights of Indian immigrants aboard.

Is this the same "Joseph Kurian" who wanted to celebrate good Friday than provide justice to Indians ? I am sure he will give extension to the Italians. :coffee:

Good Friday is National Holiday in India. Isnt it ?

At that level you are expected to put the Nation before self. There are no holidays at that level.

But if you want to quibble on semantics, it was a meeting called by the CJ of India, so it was a working holiday. :coffee:

I know what you are trying to say here that if other CJ would have been asked to come on Diwali or Eid . Nation should come first for higher officials .

"It is an in-house meeting, a discussion, not a celebration," the CJI told the media on the sidelines of the conference which closed on Easter Sunday. "This is an in-house meeting of minds." The conference was overshadowed by the bitterness over the episode, with Justice Joseph lamenting the erosion of secular values in the top court and in a separate letter writing to the PM and rejecting his invitation to dinner on Saturday, the Easter weekend.

The CJI further said: "The issue has been sorted out. I am head of the (judicial) family and in our family if one family member questions me, we will settle the question ourselves and it should not go out of the family."

Sadly the matter was brought OUTSIDE the Family by the Same Joseph Kurian who leaked that letter to the Press.

Now there were Two Other Christians Judges who attended the conference. Jospeh Kurian shows lack of character. I wonder how he was made the SC judge.

Yes indeed its really sad. Nation should come first and when people like us show the line between nation and religion then we are made to suffer from all the sides. But both Christian CJ attended the meeting.

Two Christian chief justices participate in judges' conclave - The Times of India
Jammu and Kashmir chief justice N Paul Vasanthakumar and Uttarakhand CJ K M Joseph were present on the first day of the judges' conference on Good Friday and were also seen during the CJs-CMs conference on Easter Sunday.

"All 24 chief justices of the HCs participated in the conference, the schedule for which was decided in November last year. The chief justices even had a preliminary meeting with the Chief Justice of India in December and every judge of the Supreme Court knew about it. If Justice Kurian Joseph was so aggrieved by the scheduling of the conference, why did he not raise objection in November or December last year," asked a Supreme Court source.

you can't be too sure about that. Kurian besides being a Christian, is also a Malayali and the fishermen who died were also Malayalis. When it is a question of Malayali unity vs Christian unity, most Malayalis will choose the former (at least the ones I have met do that. In fact this even applies to Malayali Muslims who are not from Northern Kerala). Let's see how Christian/Malayali, Kurian is.
