Maoists open fire at police station in Bastar; one injured
RAIPUR: Armed Maoists opened indiscriminate fire at a police station at Darbha, just 40 kms away from Jagdalpur, the divisional headquarters of Bastar, in Chhattisgarh.
Bastar district superintendent of police DN Meena said a constable was injured in the shootout when the rebels opened fire from a nearby hillock in the early morning hours.
The intermittent firing continued for almost an hour till additional security reinforcements rushed to the spot and returned fire. Subsequently, the rebels retreated into the forests.
Dharba police sation is located on the National highway No 30 Jagdalpur-Konta road close to the divisional headquarters of Bastar.
Meena said the injured constable Dharmendra Kunjam has been airlifted to the state capital for treatment.
Maoists have apparently stepped up violence in Bastar region as it is only two days ago the rebels had ambushed a patrolling party at Timilwara in Sukma district and later opened fire at a Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter. The chopper had to make an emergency landing in the dense forests in Maoist heartland, which the rebels claim it as part of their so-called liberated zone of Dandakaranya.
IAF crew on board had left the chopper and an injured radio operator there and ran to safety and reached the Chintagufa CRPF camp.
Subsequently, CRPF commandos traced the chopper and rescued the injured radio operator, who belongs to the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF).
