With gangs ruling the majority of the city Port au Prince Haiti is experiencing an unprecedented crisis of violence and brutality. The UN has called the situation "unacceptable and inhuman" because to the enormous displacements, massacres and child targeting. Violence is still increasing despite the deployment of a security operation led by Kenya raising serious concerns about how well the international response is working. According to UN statistics gang violence claimed over 5600 lives in 2024, more than 1000 more than the year before. Lynchings and summary executions which are frequently carried out by Haitian police personnel are among the numerous human rights violations brought on by this spike in violence.

Haiti's crisis is complicated by long-standing problems with political instability, economic inequality and corruption. The nation lacks a functional government and the transitional authority is having difficulty handling the crisis. Gangs have taken advantage of this gap to control a sizable portion of the capital and use violent methods to stay in power. Kenyan led Multinational Security Support mission authorized by the UN Security Council aims to assist Haitian police in securing key infrastructure and combating criminal groups. But despite some initial successes the mission operates at less than 25% of its intended capacity due to funding constraints. U.N and other international bodies have called for a more comprehensive response that including economic, humanitarian and governance support to address root causes of crisis.

With more than half of population in need of aid Haiti's humanitarian situation is catastrophic. With over a million people living in gang-controlled neighborhoods children are especially at risk. According to Amnesty International gangs are recruiting children and abusing them sexually and violently underscoring the dire repercussions of the current civil unrest. Effectively addressing this situation will provide substantial hurdles for the international community. A more comprehensive strategy is required as historical interventions have frequently been criticized for their limited impact. This covers significant investments in human rights defense and economic development governance change in addition to security support. As Haiti spirals further into chaos the urgency for a coordinated and comprehensive international response becomes increasingly evident.
